Brett Baty collects pair of hits as Mets and Marlins play to a tie
-Max Kranick allowed a pair of hits to begin his afternoon, but he got out of the first inning unscathed thanks to a 5-4-3 double play and punchout of Connor Norby.
Kranick pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out one. He'll likely start the season at Triple-A Syracuse, and could be a multi-inning reliever for the Mets if needed at some point this season.
-Mark Vientos, playing third base and hitting second in the order, singled to right field in his first at-bat against former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara, who very much looked like himself after missing all of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery.
Vientos grounded out softly to short in the third inning, and ended his day 1-for-3 at the plate.
-Brett Baty, serving as the DH on Sunday, had a nice day at the plate. In the fourth, Baty ripped a double one hop and off the wall in right center. His next time up, Baty slapped a single to the third base side, giving him two hits on the day.
Baty may not be coming into the season as the starting third baseman, but he has a chance to make the team as a backup utility infielder and a left-handed DH option.
-Elsewhere on the box score, Luisangel Acuña went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, as did centerfielder Jose Siri.
-Following Kranick's two scoreless innings, the Mets also saw scoreless outings from Tyler Zuber, Daniel Juarez, Anthony Gose, and Kevin Herget. Cameron Foster finally allowed the Marlins' first run of the day on an RBI single with two outs in the eighth, which tied the game at 1-1 after the Mets scored their run in the fourth on a balk. Still, it was a good day for the Mets pitching staff.

Dodgers' reliever Tanner Scott exits game with arm pain, MRI scheduled
Francisco Alvarez has found his bat in Triple-A after a "shocking," yet deserved demotion, and James Schiano details how the Mets catcher is looking "more like himself" after significant regression. LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott left the game in the ninth inning Monday night after feeling pain in his left pitching arm. It occurred when Scott was pitching to Minnesota's Ryan Jeffers with one out. 'He said it felt like a sting,' manager Dave Roberts said, adding that an X-ray and manual testing didn't reveal any issues. Scott will have an MRI on Tuesday. However, Roberts said it's likely Scott will need to go on the injured list. 'Hopefully it's something that's more of a scare and then we can kind of put him on ice for a little bit and get him back,' he said. Scott is 1-2 with a 4.14 ERA and a team-leading 19 saves this season. He gave up a run and walked two on 22 pitches in two-thirds of an inning before leaving the game.

David Stearns not ruling out starter prospects as Mets bullpen boost option
Access the Mets beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mike Puma about the inside buzz on the Mets. Try it free David Stearns identified the club's No. 1 trade deadline need as bullpen help. The Mets president of baseball operations will seek external additions. 'If that doesn't happen for some reason,' Stearns said Monday, 'then we probably have to begin to think about some of the arms at Triple-A and whether those guys at some point can impact us in the bullpen.' Those arms include starters Brandon Sproat and Nolan McLean, who are not yet candidates for a major league relief role but who could find their ways to the bullpen in the final sprint of the season. Sproat and McLean are top starting prospects who are performing well enough with Triple-A Syracuse to be considered for promotions. 3 Brandon Sproat is an option for the Mets to promote if needed for the bullpen later on in the season. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST After a poor start to his season, Sproat has reeled off 23 straight innings without allowing an earned run. McLean has been more consistent and posted a 2.58 ERA in 17 games with Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton this year. The Mets rotation, which had been racked by injuries earlier in the season, now is healthy. Stearns signaled the Mets did not want to convert minor league starters into relievers before being sure they would not be needed as rotation depth. 'The challenge with [converting] in-season is once you do that, you can't reverse yourself in the same season,' Stearns said before the Mets opened a series with the Angels at Citi Field. '… Once we shorten someone up to give them a chance to be a member of our pen, really tough to build them back up if you need them as a starter. And so we want to be very cautious if we're going to entertain that.' While with the Brewers, Stearns tried top starting prospects such as Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta out of the major league bullpen as a way to shoehorn their strong arms onto a roster. Such a tactic with the Mets is at least an option. 3 Nolan McLean #13 of the New York Mets throws a pitch during the fifth inning of a spring training Spring Breakout game against the Washington Nationals at Clover Park on March 15, 2024 in Port St. Lucie, is also possible that Sproat and/or McLean will be called up to plug a hole in the rotation. And it's also possible that the two spend their seasons in the minors. Stearns said he does not feel pressured to call them up at some point this season, but he is happy with their progress. 'Both those guys, I think over the last three weeks, have taken meaningful steps forward in their development,' Stearns said. 'I'm excited to see where it goes from here. And if there is a need, I think either of those guys could be ready over the next couple months.' Check out more newsletters Starling Marte could return in a 'couple of days' manager Carlos Mendoza said, perhaps Wednesday in the series finale or Friday in San Francisco. Marte is running up to 90 percent and is hitting off a machine. The Mets do not think he will require a rehab assignment. 'He's getting close,' Mendoza said of Marte, who has been out since July 6 with a right knee bruise. José Buttó also should be back soon after a third rehab outing Sunday, in which he threw another scoreless inning with Syracuse. 3 New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte (6) singles during the third inning when the New York Mets played the New York Yankees Sunday, July 6, 2025 at Citi Field in Queens, NY. Robert Sabo for NY Post Mendoza was not sure whether Buttó, who has been out with an illness, would need a fourth rehab game or would be activated Wednesday. Paul Blackburn (right shoulder impingement) has been sent to Syracuse, where he is expected to make his second rehab start Tuesday. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS The Mets reclaimed righty Rico Garcia, who had pitched one game with the Yankees before being designated for assignment. Garcia had spent the season in Syracuse before pitching in two games with the Mets early this month. Richard Lovelady cleared waivers and was outrighted to Syracuse. Dedniel Núñez, who will miss the season with elbow surgery, was transferred to the 60-day IL.
