Former Gold Coast councillor to stand trial for his stepfather's murder

Daily Mail08-07-2025
A former councillor will stand trial for the alleged murder of his stepfather as a court heard Google searches made on his phone will form part of the evidence.
Ryan Bayldon-Lumsden, 32, is accused of murdering Robert Lumsden, 58, at his family's Gold Coast home in Arundel on August 23, 2023.
Bayldon-Lumsden was serving as the division seven councillor for the Gold Coast City Council for the Liberal-National Party at the time of his arrest.
He voluntarily stepped down from the position about a week later.
Prosecutor Nicole Jackson laid out the Crown's case against the former politician during a committal hearing at the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
She said police would allege the defendant put his stepfather in a 'chokehold' following a verbal and physical argument, the ABC reported.
The court also heard Bayldon-Lumsden admitted to strangling his stepfather in the kitchen of their Arundel home during a police interview.
Defence barrister Craig Eberhard said Bayldon-Lumsden had been subject to an abusive and controlling relationship with his stepfather.
Mr Eberhard told the court Mr Lumsden had pushed his stepson, who pushed him back, causing the older man to fall backwards.
The barrister said Bayldon-Lumsden then put his stepfather in a chokehold during a struggle on the kitchen floor.
A forensic pathologist told the court Mr Lumsden was 'morbidly obese' and suffered heart issues. Mr Eberhard said the 'million-dollar question' was whether Mr Lumsden had a heart attack and whether it would have occurred regardless of the altercation.
Digital forensic analyst Senior Constable Alastair Smith told the court police had accessed internet browsing data on Bayldon-Lumsden's phone.
Among the results were searches relating to 'escaping domestic violence and coercive control' and 'coercive control and the rights of women', which were made the day prior to the alleged murder, the ABC reported.
The homepage of the domestic violence support service White Ribbon had also been visited on the same day, Mr Smith told the court.
Separate analysis of Mr Lumsden's phone found his stepson's contact had been saved under the name: 'c**k gobbler', Mr Smith said.
He said his wife's contact, Bayldon-Lumsden's mother, was saved as 'Grumpy'.
Magistrate Lisa O'Neill committed the former politician to stand trial in the Brisbane Supreme Court at a date to be determined.
Asked whether he had anything to say to the charge, the accused said: 'Not guilty'.
Bayldon-Lumsden launched a controversial bid for re-election as an independent ahead of the 2024 Gold Coast City Council election.
At the time, state MP Sam O'Connor described the bid as 'completely irresponsible', telling AAP he would likely be suspended if he was re-elected.
He was ultimately unsuccessful, placing third on first preferences with 21.72 per cent of the vote in the seat he had resoundingly won four years earlier.

Why Chinese social media is melting down over absurdly wealthy heiress Lanlan Yang who smashed her Rolls-Royce into Kyle Sandilands' chauffeur: Read the ridiculous claims

Rumours about the identity, fortune and bank balance of a wealthy heiress who crashed her Rolls-Royce into a Mercedes in Sydney 's eastern suburbs have spread like wildfire on Chinese social media. LanLan Yang, 23, was allegedly behind the wheel of her $1.5million Rolls-Royce Cullinan in the early hours of July 27 when she smashed into a van driven by George Plassaras, radio king Kyle Sandilands ' chauffeur. Plassaras was left in hospital with life-threatening injuries. Sandilands was not in the car at the time. Yang was charged by NSW Police with causing bodily harm by misconduct and refusing or failing to submit a breath test. Yang's extraordinary apparent wealth has sparked widespread interest in Australia - particularly after the Daily Mail revealed she owned two Rolls-Royces and lived in a luxury apartment in Sydney's eastern suburbs. And in recent days, the speculation has taken off in China, where she has become the subject of wild, inaccurate and very viral claims posted on Chinese platforms Douyin and Weibo, plus mainstream Chinese media reports. A series of widely-viewed Chinese social media posts falsely claimed that Yang paid up an $80million AUD bond to get bail from Waverley Local Court in Sydney's eastern suburbs. They also claimed, without naming a source or providing any corroboration, that authorities found she had $270 billion sitting in a local bank account when she was arrested. The first claim about the bond is demonstrably false - a court spokesperson told the Daily Mail there was 'no monetary condition stipulated by police' as part of her bail agreement. The bank balance claim is impossible to confirm. Fevered Chinese social media speculation also claimed she uses the English name 'Wendy' and that she is a former University of NSW student whose fortune stems from the iron ore trade. Some users even claim her minder - seen when the Daily Mail confronted Yang outside Rose Bay Police Station last month - has the rank of lieutenant colonel with the Beijing police special duty unit. This could not be confirmed and is likely false. Yang ignored questions about the charges she faces, her ability to afford two Rolls-Royces, and Plassaras's significant injuries when our reporter crossed paths with her on July 30. She kept her head down and climbed into a chauffeur-driven minivan, a stark contrast to the two luxury vehicles she is known to own. The crash left Plassaras with a broken spine, ribs, hips and femurs, a ruptured spleen and diaphragm, and a torn-open abdomen. Sandilands described his chauffeur Mr Plassaras as the 'greatest employee ever'. 'What did [he] say when he was taken away in the ambulance? He asked for his mobile phone so he could do what?' he said. 'This is a guy at 4.30 in the morning after he has been cut out of his vehicle, he's been trapped in his van for an hour, this poor bloke. Driver to the rich and famous George Plassaras was left in hospital with life-threatening injuries by the crash (above) Sandilands was not in the car at the time 'And he asks the ambo: 'Get my phone so I can make sure Kyle's all right for the week.' Neighbours at Yang's elite rental block, which caters to 'discerning clientele,' describe her as polite but rarely seen. They say she occupies the building's prized penthouse and decorates her car with ultra-exclusive Labubu toys. She also owns a second unregistered white Rolls-Royce Ghost Convertible worth up to $800,000, which sits unused in her Vaucluse penthouse garage. The building's car lift can only take 3,000kg, forcing her to park her heavier Cullinan SUV in the street. CCTV footage of the crash appears to show Yang's SUV veering into oncoming traffic before the head-on impact. Yang is on conditional bail ahead of her August 15 appearance at Downing Centre Local Court. Her bail conditions ban her from driving, require her to remain in her penthouse between 8pm and 6am, and to report to police three times a week.

Huge twist in trial of men accused of kidnapping, stripping and beating cricket great Stuart MacGill

One of the six men who had been charged with the alleged kidnapping of former Australian cricketer Stuart MacGill has had his charges dropped just before he was due to go to trial. In May, MacGill avoided jail time after a jury found him guilty of taking part in the supply of $330,000 worth of cocaine. The 54-year-old is serving a community sentence after the jury found him guilty of a lesser charge of supplying an indictable quantity of cocaine. However, the jury found him not guilty of taking part in a large commercial drug supply. MacGill had pleaded not guilty but admitted that he had introduced his partner's brother to his drug dealer, adding that he had not played a part in the drug deal. The jury later rejected that claim, with Judge Nicole Noman sentencing MacGill to an intensive corrections order which will span one year and 10 months. Judge Noman told the court that MacGill had played an indispensable role in facilitating the drug deal. 'His role was essential to bring the parties together and for the transaction to occur,' the judge said. The events that transpired later led to MacGill allegedly being kidnapped. A group of six men had been due to stand trial on Monday at the NSW District Court in Parramatta. The group included Frederick Schaaf, Richard Schaaf, Elijah Schaaf, Marino Sotiropoulos, Son Minh Nguyen and Vaeluagaomatagi Feilo. But the court heard on Monday that the Director of Public Prosecutions had chosen to withdraw the charges against Elijah Schaaf. Elijah Schaaf had pleaded not guilty to one count of being an accessory after the fact to kidnapping. He also pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of being an accessory before the fact to take or detain in company with an intention to get an advantage. The other men have all pleaded not guilty to their alleged roles in the kidnapping. MacGill was alleged to have been kidnapped from outside his Cremorne apartment in April 2021. The former Australian cricketer was allegedly taken to a property at Bringelly. It is alleged he was assaulted and threatened with a gun. Alleged demands for money were also made. MacGill was allegedly held for an hour before he was released. The right-arm leg spinner played 44 Test matches and three ODI matches for Australia. He'd go on to take 208 wickets during his Test Career, while scoring 6038 runs. In his domestic career, he'd play for New South Wales, Nottinghamshire, Somerset and Western Australia, taking 774 wickets before permanently retiring from cricket in 2012, after coming out of retirement to play for the Sydney Sixers for a season.
