"Matter of great satisfaction": Bihar CM Nitish Kumar after social security beneficiaries express gratitude for increased pension

India Gazette10-07-2025
Patna (Bihar) [India], July 10 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday expressed his satisfaction after social security beneficiaries thanked him for increasing their pension amount from 400 to 1,100 per month.
Sushila Devi from Bakhtiyarpur, Lakshmi Devi from Chandwari, and other beneficiaries appreciated the increased pension amount, stating it will cover their monthly expenses and allow them to live with dignity.
The beneficiaries expressed gratitude, saying they would no longer have to rely on financial help, thanks to the increased pension.
In a post on X, CM Nitish Kumar said, 'Today, I read the reactions of several people in the Hindustan newspaper, including Sushila Devi ji from Bakhtiyarpur, Lakshmi Devi ji from Chandwari in Mokama, Bandi Khatoon ji from Paliganj, Mahendra Prasad ji from Taregana Dih in Masaurhi, and Bhatt Kumar and his wife Geeta Kumari from Dinara in Bikram block. They all say that the increase in the pension amount will easily cover their monthly expenses, and now they won't have to stretch out their hands before anyone. This is a matter of great satisfaction.'
The increased pension amount is part of the state's social security pension schemes, including the Mukhyamantri Vridhajan Pension Yojana, the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme, and the Lakshmibai Social Security Pension Scheme.
The government aims to provide financial support to vulnerable sections of society, ensuring their dignity and well-being.
'Yesterday was a day of great joy for a large population of the state. You know that the social security pension amount has been increased from 400 rupees to 1100 rupees, and yesterday, through D.B.T., an amount of 1227.27 crore rupees was transferred at the increased rate to the accounts of more than 1 crore 11 lakh beneficiaries in the state,' Kumar posted on X.
CM Nitish Kumar has instructed the Health Department to ensure that all beneficiaries are provided with Ayushman Bharat cards. This will enable them to receive proper medical treatment free of cost in case of illness, further improving their quality of life.
'We want all of you to remain healthy and happy, and that is why I have instructed the Health Department to ensure that all of you are provided with the Ayushman Bharat card so that, in case of illness, you can receive proper treatment free of cost. The elderly, widowed women, and differently-abled individuals are an important part of society, and we are continuously working to improve their lives,' said the Bihar CM.
The Chief Minister emphasised the government's commitment to ensuring that every section and class of society receives their full rights and respect.
'Ensuring that every section and class of society in the state receives their full rights and respect has been our priority from the beginning,' he added.
The initiative, implemented on June 21, saw 1,227.27 crore transferred to beneficiaries' accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) on July 9.
On July 11, Kumar will transfer 1,227.27 crore to over 1.11 crore beneficiaries under six social security pension schemes via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a slew of measures in poll-bound Bihar to strengthen his government's presence ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
Some of the key measures include 35% reservation for Women in Government jobs, domicile policy, job recruitment drive, increased pension for social security beneficiaries, Ayushman Bharat cards and youth-focused initiatives.
These measures are seen as an attempt by Nitish Kumar to consolidate his vote bank and attract new supporters ahead of the assembly elections. The opposition, led by Tejashwi Yadav, has also announced several promises, including providing 2,500 per month to women under the 'Mai-Bahen Mann Yojana'.
The upcoming Bihar assembly elections, scheduled later this year, is expected to be a closely contested one, with both sides vying for the support of women and youth voters. (ANI)

How India can become a global health care leader by 2047

As India celebrates 79 years of Independence, our health care journey tells a compelling story from tackling epidemics post-1947 to becoming one of the world's most dynamic health systems. Over the past seven decades, we have moved from underdeveloped infrastructure to building one of the most diverse health care ecosystems globally. Government initiatives like Ayushman Bharat have expanded access, while the private sector has driven quality, innovation, and scale. Together, these efforts have increased life expectancy, reduced infant mortality, and broadened coverage. Health care(HT file photo) By 2047, when we mark a century of Independence, India is poised to become a global health care leader. We have world-class clinical talent, a globally competitive pharmaceutical industry, a vibrant diagnostics and MedTech sector, and a reputation for delivering affordable innovation. More than a social service, health care in India is now a driver of economic growth, employment, and technological leadership. But we must act with urgency. The next two decades will determine whether we retain global relevance or fall behind. The world is looking for scalable, inclusive, and resilient health care models. India has the potential to offer one but this will require unified action, not fragmented progress. India stands at a demographic crossroads. While urban India is benefiting from rapid advances in diagnostics, digital health, and innovation, a large part of Bharat, India's Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns continues to face systemic gaps in access, quality, and affordability. If India is to lead the world, we must build healthcare models that address this divide and do so in ways that can be replicated across developing nations. One of India's most significant successes has been the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which provides free health care coverage to over 55 crore citizens. It has set a global benchmark for publicly funded health insurance and is making a real difference in rural and low-income households. Similarly, Health & Wellness Centres under the Ayushman Bharat umbrella are a step towards decentralising care. However, for these efforts to deliver long-term impact, we need to strengthen quality, availability of diagnostics, and digital infrastructure at the primary care level. Equipping every block-level centre with the ability to diagnose, treat, and refer supported by trained personnel and robust data is essential. From a manufacturing and investment standpoint, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes in pharma and MedTech are promising. Yet they are still maturing and have not reached their full potential. For true leadership, India must move beyond Made in India to Designed for the World, especially in low-cost diagnostics, medical devices, and digital tools tailored for underserved populations. There are five priorities for global health care leadership Make quality the cornerstone: Although some facilities meet or exceed international standards, quality of care remains uneven particularly outside metros. A national, enforceable framework covering both public and private sectors is urgently needed. Accreditation based on outcomes, standardised clinical protocols, transparent data, and digital quality monitoring must become the norm. Scale AI and digital infrastructure: India has shown how technology can transform public services from Aadhaar to UPI. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is a strong foundation, but rural adoption remains low. AI-powered diagnostics, remote consultations, and interoperable electronic records must be scaled across Bharat with safeguards for ethical data use and governance. Redefine Medical Value Travel (MVT): India is a global destination for cost-effective, high-quality care. To lead, we must expand our offerings in preventive health, fertility, oncology, aesthetics, Ayurveda, and wellness. A unified national initiative, Heal in India must include multilingual support, global accreditations, seamless logistics, and a single online interface. Invest in innovation, not just scale: India must transition from generics dominance to health care innovation leadership. A national healthcare innovation mission, similar to ISRO or Digital India, should support R&D funding, IP protection, simplified clinical trials, and collaboration between startups, academia, and industry focused on solutions for India and the world. Unlock sustainable investment: Achieving the 2047 vision requires substantial and sustained investment. The government's commitment to 2.5% of GDP is a positive signal, but effective implementation is key. The private sector must be enabled through stable regulation, insurance access, and blended finance models such as outcome-linked funding and health infrastructure bonds. The road to 2047 cannot be built by government alone. It demands a collective mission where policymakers, private players, innovators, civil society, and community workers operate with shared purpose. We must view frontline health workers as change agents, not mere implementers. Technology must strengthen not bypass primary care systems. And most importantly, public–private partnerships must evolve from transactional arrangements to platforms for co-creation and shared accountability. India has the talent, scale, and responsibility to lead. But true health care leadership will not come from building more hospitals in metros. It will come from solving for Bharat and in doing so, offering replicable, inclusive health systems for the world. IMA HQ backs Haryana unit in fight over Ayushman Bharat payment delays

New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) headquarters has extended full support to the Haryana State Branch in its efforts to secure timely payments and proper budgetary allocations under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. In a letter dated August 13, 2025, addressed to IMA Haryana president Dr. Mahaveer Jain, IMA national president Dr. Dilip Bhanushali expressed serious concern over persistent delays in payments to empanelled hospitals in Haryana and other states. "IMA Headquarters expresses its full support and solidarity with IMA Haryana in your just and rightful efforts to secure appropriate budgetary allocations and ensure timely payments to hospitals empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat scheme," the letter stated. "These delays severely impact the functioning of hospitals, demoralize healthcare providers, and, more critically, jeopardize the delivery of essential services to the underprivileged." The national body urged IMA Haryana to "actively and persistently pursue the matter" with state authorities to ensure that the crisis is addressed without any further delay. "No stone should be left unturned in your efforts to bring this matter to a just and timely resolution," it said. Assuring full backing from the national body, the IMA HQ reaffirmed its commitment to standing with IMA Haryana in its pursuit of justice for the medical fraternity. The letter concluded with a promise of all necessary support to resolve the issue swiftly and effectively. Earlier, on August 6, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Haryana decided to suspend Ayushman Bharat health services in the state, citing non-payment of dues to private hospitals. In an official statement, the IMA Haryana mentioned that a meeting was held between ACS Sudhir Rajpal and officials of Ayushman Bharat Haryana High Authority. The IMA was informed that around Rs 245 crore have been received by the Ayushman Bharat Haryana High Authority, out of which Rs 175 crore is Haryana government's share and Rs 70 crore is the Central government's share as budget for this quarter. However, it was also told that around Rs 490 crore arrears to private hospitals are still pending. On August 2, around 650-700 private hospitals in Haryana were set to withdraw from the Ayushman Bharat scheme starting August 7 due to pending dues of over Rs 500 crore. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Haryana claimed that despite multiple assurances from government officials, payments continue to be delayed, with some hospitals experiencing delays of up to 4-5 months. Speaking to ANI, Dr Ashok Mahajan, who was the Former President of Haryana IMA , said, " IMA Haryana does not want to withdraw Ayushman services; it is being forced to! Hospitals have bills running into crores and are unable to pay their doctors, staff and vendors. They are forced to take this step to prevent further losses. They seem to be funding this government scheme; SHA pays late, and deductions are made without any reason." Over 1.2 crore people in Haryana are enrolled in the scheme, including low-income families and senior citizens. The withdrawal of private hospitals may lead to difficulties in accessing healthcare services, putting additional pressure on government hospitals. The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) is a flagship scheme of the government. It provides health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation to around 55 crore beneficiaries belonging to 12.37 crore families belonging to the economically weaker 40 per cent population of the country.
