Big VA benefits coming in August for US veterans: How much money you will get and when? Check eligibility

(VA) through a variety of financial support programs every month. A large chunk of that money goes to those on
disability compensation
, which currently supports around 6.2 million people. These monthly payments are not taxed and they go to support veterans with disabilities - either mental or physical - that relate to their service.
The VA has launched the new 2025 rates for the Disability Compensation Rates, according to Marca. These are monthly, tax-free benefits show what eligible veterans qualify to receive. At present, the rates are up by 2.5 percent to match the 2025 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) jump and this move aims to minimize the damages and to keep up with the rising living costs.

For single veterans in 2025, a full 100% disability means more than $44,000 a year tax-free. Those with less than 30% get the same each month, no matter their family size. Above 30%, pay rises if there are spouses or dependent elders. Adding a child clearly raises the money. Families with more children get more each month. There are also extra benefits for kids over 18 who attend college. It is key to keep accurate dependent records to maximize benefits.

For those with a 10% disability rating (the lowest designation) the monthly payment this year is $175.51, regardless of how many dependents are claimed. The rating increases in 10-percentage-point increases up to 100%, with the amount of financial support going up accordingly.
How much will veterans with 100% disability ratings receive?
In 2025, veterans with a 100% disability rating and no dependents will receive $3,831.30 per month. For those with more severe disabilities, this amount rises for each dependent—whether it's a spouse, child, or parent. In certain cases, Aid and Attendance benefits can also be added, offering extra financial support for help with daily activities or household tasks.

New Delhi: On Saturday afternoon, a pigeon was flying gracefully in Chandni Chowk when suddenly, a razor-sharp kite string appeared out of nowhere. As the thread caught its wing and sliced deep into the flesh, the bird, badly injured, fell to the ground. The story repeats itself every year around Independence Day, with many birds sustaining fatal injuries too after getting entangled in kite strings, especially Chinese manjha. So far this year, while there have been fewer cases due to rain, veterinarians believe the number could go up by Monday as many people will fly kites during the long weekend. Jain Bird Hospital in Chandni Chowk said it had received more than 25 cases of birds sustaining injuries after coming in contact with kite strings. In many cases, the birds collapse from shock, said Singh. On Friday, Wildlife Rescue, a bird rehabilitation centre catering mostly to raptors in Wazirabad, rescued 18 birds, including egrets and kites, that had sustained injuries. Of these, 13 had deep cut wounds. In comparison, the centre had rescued 15 birds last year. Mohd Saud, co-founder of Wildlife Rescue, said they expect the cases of bird injuries to rise further during the weekend, when more people would be flying kites. Singh advised people that if they find an injured bird, they should handle them carefully. "Sometimes people hold an injured bird too tightly, especially around the abdomen, which can lead to hypoxia, or a lack of oxygen. Instead, birds should be handled gently and transported in a shoebox or cardboard carton with small air holes. Francis Serrao appointed as Bishop of Mysore Diocese
Mangaluru: A Mangaluru-based Jesuit priest, who is currently serving as Bishop of Shimoga Diocese, was appointed as the Bishop of Mysore Diocese. The official announcement of Most Rev Bishop Francis Serrao was made on Friday, which also coincided with his birthday. Bishop Serrao, a Jesuit, was appointed Bishop of Shimoga on March 19, 2014, and was ordained on May 7 the same year. Born in Moodbidri on Aug 15, 1959, he entered the Society of Jesus on Jan 3, 1979, at Mount St Joseph, Bengaluru. His philosophical and theological studies took place at Jesuit institutions — Satya Nilayam in Chennai and Jnana Deepa Vidya Peetha in Pune — followed by a Licentiate in Theology from Vidya Jyoti College, Delhi. He was ordained a priest on April 30, 1992, and made his perpetual profession in the Society of Jesus on May 1, 1999. Over the years, his ministry spanned pastoral service, social action, academic leadership, and community formation. He began with pastoral ministry in Mundgod in the Diocese of Karwar, before joinng social development work at Loyola Vikas Kendra in Mundgod.
