Canal-based water supply project reviewed
Ludhiana: On a three-day visit to the city, a team of experts from the
World Bank
(WB) and
Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank
(AIIB) reviewed the progress of the WB and AIIB-funded
canal-based water supply project
in the city. Apart from conducting review meetings with officials of the civic body and water utility company, the delegation also visited the site of a world-class
water treatment plant
(WTP) in Bilga village. Task team leader (WB) Rosanna Nitti and task team leader (AIIB) Ankur Aggarwal led the delegation, while BKD Raja (safeguards), environment specialist Charu Jain, environment associate Eya Cruz, and consultant Navika Chaudhary, among others, were part of the team.
MC joint commissioner Ankur Mahindroo, chief engineer Ravinder Garg, and superintending engineer (projects) Parul Goyal, among other officials of the civic body, accompanied the team.
The team of experts also inspected a number of sites where overhead water reservoirs are being constructed under the project and deliberated upon the environmental impact, safety, and welfare of labourers and residents.
MC commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal said that necessary directions had been issued to the contractor to expedite the work so that the project could be completed on time. The WB and AIIB team expressed satisfaction over the progress of the project.

Chandigarh: Facing multiple queries and confusion over the municipal corporation's plan to dispose of its Manimajra land for a housing complex, municipal commissioner Amit Kumar will hold a high-level meeting on Monday. Officials are currently discussing what norms should apply to these units, including how they should be integrated and what specifications they must meet. Sources in the MC also said that although the deputy commissioner's office has shared property rates from nearby areas, it has not provided the collector rate for the specific land parcel in question. This rate is essential for initiating the auction process. "There is a clear directive from the central government that, in Chandigarh, the collector rate of the specific land must be used as the reserve price for disposal. We cannot rely on rates from adjoining areas," a source explained. The layout plan As per the approved zoning and layout plan, five residential pockets will be developed on a 7.7-acre plot in Manimajra. With the UT administration approving a floor area ratio (FAR) of two for the project, each housing pocket can go up to five storeys. In addition to the residential areas, the plan also includes space for a shopping complex, green zones, and reserved land. While recently approving the layout plan, the urban planning department noted that the layout of pocket number 6 has been revised based on the latest survey. The updated plan includes five group housing pockets, a convenient shopping area, green space, a playground, and a reserved area.

A.P. govt. sanctions ₹450-crore water supply project for Mangalagiri-Tadepalli region
The Government of Andhra Pradesh has sanctioned a ₹450-crore Comprehensive Water Supply Improvement Scheme for the Mangalagiri-Tadepalli Municipal Corporation (MTMC), aiming to ensure equitable and sustainable access to safe drinking water across the region. The new scheme, approved by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department, covers the erstwhile Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of Mangalagiri and Tadepalli, along with 15 newly merged villages, excluding six villages currently proposed for merger with the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA). 'The project is designed to bridge the critical infrastructure gaps in water supply, especially in the newly integrated areas, and to ensure reliable service delivery up to 2056,' S. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, MA&UD Department, said in a statement on Saturday. The MTMC was formed through the merger of Mangalagiri and Tadepalli municipalities with 21 surrounding villages. An earlier initiative, backed by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) with ₹221 crore, had made only partial headway due to funding limitations, leaving major components—especially in newly merged regions—unfinished. To address this, a fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared. The proposed scheme sources water from the Krishna River and includes new intake and treatment facilities, as well as distribution networks for underserved zones, and the completion of earlier AIIB-funded works. 'This scheme marks a crucial milestone in our efforts to ensure equitable access to urban services and reflects the government's commitment to sustainable urban growth,' added Suresh Kumar.

Street vendors owe ₹85 crore as fee to Chandigarh civic body: Data
STREET VENDORS in Chandigarh owe ₹85 crore as fee to the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh. There were 10,589 registered street vendors in all, but the licenses of 6,904 vendors have been cancelled for failing to clear their dues. 'We are taking strict action against the defaulter vendors, who are not clearing their we de-registered licenses of 6,904 vendors,' said Sumeet Shubhankar, Joint Commissioner, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. As per official data, only 4,035 vendors are paying their dues regularly at present. His ward-wise list of vendors along with their dues is being uploaded on the MC house meeting agenda for June 10 for discussion. During the MC house meeting, a policy for allowing certain street vendors to operate in some areas of Chandigarh may also be taken up. As per the Chandigarh Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Rules, 2018, which came into effect on July 18, 2018, various 'Teeh Bazaars' are allowed in the city. Amritsari naan* sellers are allowed to place tables and chairs in front of their shops. The MC officials said that 'vendors of kulcha chholay, channa bhatura, tandoor, Amritsari naan, are not allowed to place tables and chairs in front of their shops, rather they are to serve food in a proper manner in the area of 5×6 only'. However, when contacted, Jaipur Singh Bunty, who is also Street Deputy Mayor, said that all other vendors are making payments on time, except the slot of illegal vendors. It is unfortunate that the MC is not acting against illegal/ street vendors, he said. 'What are the MC inspectors doing if these illegal vendors are there in the MC list?' Jaipur Singh Bunty asked. 'They always say that vendors of kulcha chholay, chana bhatura, etc, are not paying the fees regularly. But if we talk about the records, they are making regular payments. I request the MC officials to act against the illegal vendors, not the vendors of kulcha chholay, channa bhatura, etc,' he added. THE MUNICIPAL Corporation (MC), Chandigarh on Thursday removed 23 illegal vendors and issued 37 challans in areas like Sector 17 and Sector 22 market and Sadar Bazaar in Sector 19 in its anti-encroachment drive. The action was taken following the instructions of Municipal Commissioner Anindita Mitra. A total of 23 vendors were removed and 37 challans were issued in the city during the drive. According to civic officials, several unauthorised vendors were found occupying footpaths and other public spaces, creating obstructions for pedestrians and local businesses. Fines and penalties were imposed on the violators. Joint Commissioner Sumeet Shubhankar said that the enforcement team and area inspectors undertook a special inspection in the market areas to identify and take action against encroachments. The MC has intensified its enforcement activities to ensure the proper use of public spaces and maintain civic order. The civic body appealed to the vendors to operate within the designated zones and follow the rules to avoid penalties and other violations.
