Woman who went on a ten-day silent retreat shares alarming timetable of strictly regimented day

A woman who went on a ten day silent yoga retreat has shared the alarmingly strict timetable she had to follow there.
Stephanie Gavan revealed how each day at the Dhamma Dipa Vipassana meditation centre in Herefordshire was tightly scheduled - with nearly 11 hours of meditation each day.
She also said guests have to adhere to a list of rules banning phones, laptops books, writing, eye contact, gesturing, eating past noon and – crucially – talking.
Vipassana, which means 'to see things as they really are' is one of India 's most ancient meditation techniques.
The practice involves repeatedly scanning the body from head to toe until you feel waves of vibrations charging through your limbs.
Ms Gavan signed up to do a vipassana course after she felt swamped with work, dissatisfied with her living situation and navigating a complicated family drama.
Although she had 'dabbled' in meditation before it had never been for more than 15 minutes until her place on the retreat was confirmed.
Despite working up to 45 minutes of meditation daily before attending Vipassana, when Ms Gavan arrived her hear palms were sweating and her heart was pounding.
She has now told dazed digital about her bizarre experience including the regimented routine she had to follow, and how fellow retreat-goers started to disappear.
On the first day attendees were rudely woken from their slumber by a loud gong sounding at 4 am.
They then brushed their teeth before trudging across a dark field to a large gender-segregated hall where a cushioned space has been assigned for each of them.
One each person had taken a seat recordings of S. N. Goenka - the first teacher of Vipassana meditation - was played on speakers.
'No matter how many cushions I used to support me, a persistent ache gnawed at my spine, my knees felt like shards of glass, and my ass became permanently numb', Ms Gavan said.
The group sat in the hall for two hours at the start of each day and followed the same routine for the whole time they were at the retreat.
Ms Gavan said as the days passed by, more and more empty cushions started to appear in the hall, signaling early departures.
The rest of the day consisted of solo and group meditation sessions, meal breaks and question time before bed at 9.30pm.
In total attendees do roughly 10 hours and 45 minutes of meditation each day.
Ms Gavan said the part of the retreat she found particularly challenging was being silent.
She added: 'Being alone with yourself is hard, but it's also revealing. Boredom forces you to pay attention to things you'd usually miss.
'At break, I watched birds slurp down worms like spaghetti and caterpillars making leaves disappear.
'Suddenly, every occurrence is an event, and you begin to appreciate how precarious, profound and funny life can be.'
When the group's vow of silence was finally lifted and they were able to discuss their experiences Ms Gavan found most of the women she had been were seeking some kind of healing.
This included those battling addiction, grieving, or struggling to find a purpose in their life.
For some Vipassana was a positive experience, with one woman going as far as to say,' Vipassana has been the best thing I've ever done for my mental health'.
However, not everyone found the retreat to be beneficial, and another attendee said it made her anxious.
She also expressed how she believes there should be a bigger health warning for people with prior mental health issues.
A spokesperson for Vipassana in Hereford said: 'A Vipassana course is serious, intensive and demanding, and all participants are made fully aware of the demands of the course before they come.
'They are asked to confirm that they have carefully read and understood the Code of Discipline and the Timetable, so they know what to expect.'

Sales are booming and demand for alcohol-free beers is higher than it has ever been. But now research suggests they are not exactly the health boost many people hope. Scientists found that drinking two bottles a day is enough to drive up blood sugar levels – increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes. The drinks led to a build-up of insulin in the blood, another warning sign that diabetes could set in. And levels of harmful cholesterol and triglycerides – blood fats linked with heart disease – also rose with some types of no or low-alcohol beers. Many also have a high calorie content, which can raise the risk of obesity. Pub sales of alcohol-free beers hit a record 120million pints in 2023, up 14 per cent from the previous year and a huge 77.8 per cent increase since 2019. The steep rise reflects a marked change in drinking habits, with more and more Britons opting to avoid alcohol in favour of 'healthier' alternatives. While there is little doubt this approach is better than heavy alcohol consumption for health, the latest study suggests no-alcohol beers are far from harmless. Scientists from Germany and the US followed 44 healthy young men who drank either two 330ml bottles of alcohol-free beer or water every day for four weeks. They had regular blood tests to monitor how it affected their bodies. The results, in the journal Nutrients, showed a worrying effect on cardiovascular health. The dangers were greater with booze-free wheat beers and so-called 'mixed beers' – which are often flavoured with orange or lemon soda. Lighter Pilsner-type beers stripped of alcohol, or with a maximum 0.5 per cent alcohol content, were slightly less damaging. In a report on their findings researchers said: 'Non-alcoholic beer is increasingly consumed as an alternative to alcoholic drinks. 'But the benefits and risks are not yet known. We found they have an unfavourable effect on metabolism, mainly driven by their calorie and sugar content.'

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) is expected to refuse the use of Alzheimer's drugs lecanemab and donanemab on the NHS, despite their success in slowing the disease's progression. The regulator's decision will reportedly be based on cost-effectiveness, as the drugs are estimated to cost between £20,000 to £25,000, which is considered too high for the limited benefit they provide. Trials showed lecanemab can slow Alzheimer's progression by 27 per cent over 18 months by removing build-ups of the protein beta-amyloid from the brain, while donanemab teaches the body's immune cells to remove the amyloid protein. Around 70,000 adults would have been eligible for treatment if the drugs had been approved. Both drugs have UK drug licenses and are available privately, but Nice estimates that the cognitive decline slowed by donanemab is not enough to justify the cost to the NHS. Alzheimer's Research UK expressed disappointment, stating that while the treatments are not perfect, they represent a vital foundation for further scientific progress.

Sir Keir Starmer is facing a major challenge for his government to intervene and delay a vote on assisted dying to go ahead on Friday this week. A group of more than 50 Labour MPs have this weekend written to the Leader of the House Lucy Powell asking her to intervene and postpone this Friday's final third reading vote on Kim Leadbeater's assisted dying bill in the Commons. Instead they are demanding that the government provides more parliamentary time to scrutinise a bill which will bring 'fundamental changes' to healthcare in England. The move marks a serious split over the issue among Labour MPs and in effect is a challenge to Sir Keir who is in favour of assisted dying. Even though the bill is a free vote as a conscience issue for MPs, it is now becoming a dividing line in the Labour parliamentary party. Sir Keir and the government have consistently insisted they are 'neutral' on the issue which has been the subject of a private members bill and have attempted to take a 'hands off' approach to it. But Labour MPs including Paul Waugh, Torcuil Crichton, Florence Eshalomi, Jess Asato, Adam Jogee, Polly Billington, Debbie Abrahams, Dawn Butler, Antonia Bance, Anna Dixon, Paul Frith, Daniel Francis and dozens of others now believe the limited private members bill procedure is not good enough for an issue which will deliver huge change. The letter to Ms Powell, seen by The Independent, says: 'On Friday, Members will debate and vote on perhaps the most consequential piece of legislation that has appeared before the House in generations. 'This is not a normal Bill. It alters the foundations of our NHS, the relationship between doctor and patient, and it strips power away from Parliament, concentrating it in the hands of future Health Secretaries. 'MPs will be arriving at Westminster on Friday morning without sight of the final version of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.' They noted: 'The sponsor of the Bill [Ms Leadbeater] has proudly stated that it has received more time in Parliament than some Government Bills have. And yet; MPs have had the opportunity to vote on just 12 of 133 amendments tabled at Report Stage. 'Just fourteen percent of MPs have been afforded the opportunity to speak in the chamber on this Bill Several movers of amendments haven't been able to speak to the changes they have laid.' One of the amendments not voted on was a protection against people with anorexia and other eating disorders being subject to assisted dying put forward by Labour MP Naz Shah. Even though Ms Leadbeater had indicated she would agree to the late provision, despite rejecting similar amendments before, it did not come up for a vote. The letter went on: 'Despite this, the Bill has been radically changed from the one presented to MPs at Second Reading in November. As it stands today, the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is now longer than the Government's Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill with a staggering 64 clauses and two schedules. 'The fact that such fundamental changes are being made to this Bill at the eleventh hour is not a badge of honour, it is a warning. The private member's bill process has shown itself to be a woefully inadequate vehicle for the introduction of such a foundational change to our NHS and the relationship between doctor and patient. 'New Clause 2 was added to the Bill last Friday with a sizable majority. Such a profound alteration to this Bill at the last minute reflects the discomfort uniting the House about the current format of this Bill and the desire to further amend it to protect vulnerable people.' They added: 'This is no longer about debating the abstract principle of assisted dying. The Bill before Parliament has created real concern with medical experts and charities. MPs and the Government should listen to their expertise. 'We implore you as the Leader of the House to allocate more Parliamentary time to the scrutiny of this Bill, the valid concerns that Members have about its implementation, and the consequences it could have on vulnerable populations.' However, supporters of the Bill have complained about delaying tactics used by opponents. On Friday Lib Dem MP Christine Jardine, one of the Bill's sponsors, made a point of order claiming opponents were 'hiding in the lobby toilets' during votes, to delay the Bill's progress. The Independent has approached Ms Leadbeater for comment.
