RBI looks to ensure uniformity in credit bureau data quality

Time of India04-07-2025
New Delhi: The banking regulator is examining suggestions to further streamline
credit bureau processes
and reduce information asymmetry with lenders, a move aimed at addressing data inconsistency and transparency for customers, said people familiar with the development.
"A technical working group has been formed by the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) to address concerns raised by financial institutions related to credit information companies (CICs)," said an executive, who did not wish to be identified.
A senior public sector bank executive said the four CICs - TransUnion Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited (TransUnion CIBIL), Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark - have given some suggestions to the RBI to ensure data uniformity and also to set up a common grievance redressal portal.
"There is a need for some more common standards among CICs so that there is a uniformity relating to
data quality index
(DQI), and also for looking into the records of inactive or written-off customers," the executive said, adding that a single-window platform for data submission can also be explored.
Queries emailed to the RBI did not elicit a response till press time.
The RBI has extended the alternative grievance redressal mechanism under the Reserve Bank-Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021 to cover grievances against CICs.
Earlier this week, RBI deputy governor M Rajeshwar Rao said a key challenge is identity standardisation and that CICs rely on credit institutions to provide accurate and validated IDs. "There is a need to move towards a
unique borrower identifier
, which is secure, verifiable and consistent across the system," he said, addressing the TransUnion CIBIL's Credit Conference in Mumbai.
The RBI has been taking up with CICs the issue of quick disposal of complaints raised against them. In 2023 it had mandated that complainants are entitled to compensation of ₹100 per day if their complaint is unresolved within 30 days from the initial filing.
The RBI deputy governor, in his speech, also said that CICs must aspire to more frequent updates of credit data, as against the current fortnightly interval.

India's RBI Said to Have Sold at Least $5 Billion to Boost Rupee

(Bloomberg) -- India's central bank sold US dollars across both onshore and offshore currency markets this month to prop up the rupee as it weakened toward a record low, according to people familiar with the transactions. The Reserve Bank of India sold at least $5 billion worth of the US currency, one of the people said, asking not to be identified as the information is private. The RBI didn't immediately respond to an email requesting comment on the matter. If the trend persists, it could become RBI's largest month of net dollar sales since January. The rupee fell to 87.89 per dollar last week, just shy of its all-time low as US President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods on Aug. 6 to 50% as a penalty for its purchases of Russian oil. A weaker rupee could fuel imported inflation and strain an already fragile economic recovery. The intervention suggests a potential shift away from the RBI's previously restrained approach under Governor Sanjay Malhotra, who took office in December. The rupee has depreciated more than 2% so far this year, making it among Asia's worst-performing currencies. Roughly half of that drop came in the past two weeks after it became evident Trump was planning to increase the tariffs. On multiple occasions last week, the central bank was seen stepping into the offshore market just before domestic currency trading began at 9 a.m. Mumbai time, according to two of the people familiar with the matter, who declined to be identified as they aren't authorized to speak on it. Relying on so-called non-deliverable forwards allows the central bank to guide the rupee's trajectory without having to sell large volumes of dollars outright. The central bank heavily relied on this strategy last year. The RBI's latest foreign-exchange reserves data also point to increased intervention, with the stockpile falling by $9.3 billion, the steepest drop since November, to $689 billion in the week through Aug. 1. Part of the decline may reflect valuation changes in global currencies, not solely the central bank's dollar sales or purchases. --With assistance from Anup Roy. Sovereign gold bonds: Two tranches up for premature redemption today; investors make up to 147% returns

Sovereign gold bonds: Two tranches of sovereign gold bonds (SGBs) are due for premature redemption today, August 11, according to a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) circular. The 2019-20 Series IX (issued in February 2020) and the 2020-21 Series V (issued in August 2020) can be redeemed today at ₹ 10,070 per gram, the RBI said, providing investors the opportunity to earn up to 147% returns on their investments. The redemption price of the SGBs has been decided based on the simple average of the closing gold price of 999 purity of the previous three business days from the date of redemption, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA). While the tenure of these gold bonds is eight years, investors have the option of premature redemption after the fifth year from the date of issue. Sovereign Gold Bonds 2019-20 (Series IX) were open for subscription from February 3 to February 7, 2020. The issue price of the SGB during the subscription period was set at ₹ 4,070 per gram. Therefore, at the current redemption price, investors can make a return of up to 147%. Sovereign Gold Bonds 2020-21 (Series V) were open for bidding between August 3 and August 7, 2020. The issue price for the bond during the subscription period was ₹ 5,334, resulting in an absolute return of 89% on the investment. Gold prices have been in a sharp uptrend over the past few years, impacted by the pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, the weakening US dollar and now the global uncertainty created by tariffs unleashed by US President Donald Trump. SFBs are government-backed securities linked to the price of gold. These bonds are issued by the Reserve Bank of India on behalf of the Government of India. SGBs give you a fixed interest of 2.50% per year on your initial investment. This interest is paid to your bank account twice a year, and the final interest payment comes along with the principal amount when the bond matures. If you want to withdraw the bond before maturity, you need to contact your bank, SHCIL office, post office, or agent at least 30 days before the next interest payment date. The request must be made at least one day before the interest payment date. Once approved, the money will be transferred to your bank account provided during the application, according to the details available on the RBI's website.
