Aquinas' Wimbley Jr. and Dillard's Reid are Broward 7A-4A Overall Athletes of the Year
For his senior season, he chose to focus solely on basketball and transfer to Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas where he made an immediate impact and led the Raiders to a state title.
At Fort Lauderdale Dillard, track and field standout Alexia Reid became the key cog in what has become a new dynasty in the sport.
Reid etched her name in the record books, winning three state titles while leading the Panthers to an impressive repeat team championship.
For their impressive seasons, Wimbley Jr. and Reid are the Broward County Overall Athletes of the Year for Classes 7A-4A.
Wimbley Jr. is the boys' winner after leading Aquinas to its first state title in boys' basketball since 2001 and second ever for the program.
Wimbley Jr., who was also the Herald's Boys' Basketball 7A-4A Player of the Year, averaged 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and 2.5 blocked shots per game.
He fit in seamlessly with an already-talented roster for the Raiders and led them to a BCAA Big 8 title and district and regional titles.
'It was the best feeling ever because this is exactly what I came to Aquinas to do,' Wimbley Jr. said at state. 'We were in that situation, I don't even know how many times this year. For this to happen like that showed the heart this team's got. I love these boys. Every tournament we were in we were down, but we really wanted it.'
Reid, who will compete for UCF in the fall, finished her time with the Panthers as a state champion in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles, as well as a key contributor on two of Broward County's best relays.
On a deep and talented squad, Reid stood out and helped Dillard repeat as girls' team state champions in Class 3A, topping mighty Miami Northwestern for the second consecutive year after the Bulls had won a state-record 14 state titles in a row.
'It was a satisfying win, especially after we had so many (weather) delays the first day,' said Reid, who was also named the Herald's Broward Girls' Track and Field Athlete of the Year in May. 'We had to regroup and stay strong mentally and determined. It showed how together we were as a team and as a family.'
BOYS' FINALISTS
▪ Christien Moreau, St. Thomas Aquinas (football, track and field): Moreau was a force on the Raiders' football team's defense, helping them win a state-record sixth consecutive state title. Moreau, who will be a senior next season and is being recruited as a defensive lineman by multiple FBS schools, had 41 tackles including 12 for loss, nine sacks and one fumble return for a touchdown. In track, Moreau was the top shot putter and discus thrower in Broward County, qualifying for state once again.
▪ Joshua Gammage, Dillard (cross-country, track and field): Gammage capped a stellar running career by running the fastest time at state by a Broward athlete (15:37) and following that up in track season with the fastest times in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.
▪ Gio Rojas, Douglas (baseball): Rojas showed off why he is a potential first round Major League Baseball draft pick heading into his senior season as he powered the Eagles to their state-record fifth consecutive state championship. Rojas went 12-0 on the mound with a 0.72 ERA, and struck out a county-best 120 batters in 68 innings.
▪ Tyler Johnson, Cypress Bay (volleyball): Johnson is heading to BYU after a stellar career on the court for the Lightning. Johnson, a 6-3 outside hitter, once again showed off his great skill by leading the Lightning to the Class 3A regional semifinals with 302 kills, 147 digs and 52 blocks.
GIRLS' FINALISTS
▪ Nykeria Flowers, Northeast (basketball): Flowers was the engine that drove the Hurricanes to the state final four for the first time since 2017. Flowers led Northeast to a school-record 28-3 season and their first BCAA Big 8 title, averaging 19.7 points, 3.8 steals, 3.5 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game.
▪ Shynah Collins, Dillard (cross-country, track and field): Collins, an eighth-grader, proved herself to be one of the rising stars in Broward and one of the key members of the Panthers state championship track team, helping Dillard repeat as team champs and win a 3,200-meter relay title. In cross-country, she finished sixth individually in Class 3A.
▪ Grace Finneran, STA (cross-country, track and field): Finneran had another dominant cross-country season, capped by running a county-best 18:26 at the state Class 4A meet. She followed that up by earning second team honors in track in the 1,600 meters.
▪ Maddison Manragh, Western (basketball, flag football): Manragh proved herself a valuable part of two of the Wildcats' top programs. In basketball, she led Western to the regional playoffs, averaging 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals per game. In flag football, Manragh caught 46 passes for 656 yards and 12 touchdowns and had 61 flag pulls and eight interceptions on defense to lead the Wildcats to the Class 4A regional finals.

Mike Vrabel's memory of QB Kliff Kingsbury: "He wasn't better than Tom Brady"
It was over 20 years ago, but Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury were teammates for one season together with New England. Vrabel was a veteran linebacker entering his third season with the club when the Patriots selected Kingsbury at No. 201 overall in the sixth round of the 2003 draft. Kingsbury spent that season on injured reserve as the team went on to win Super Bowl XXXVIII over the Panthers. With enough depth at quarterback, the Patriots cut Kingsbury at the start of the 2004 regular season. So what does Vrabel remember about being Kingsbury's teammate? 'He wasn't better than Tom Brady,' Vrabel said in his Wednesday press conference, eliciting some laughter. 'Kliff's a good friend. I mean there's a handful of coaches over there that I've played with in the league whether that's a year, or in Larry [Izzo]'s case, eight years. So, they've got a good staff, they've got a good mix of guys that played in this league and other guys that didn't, but that's a good coaching staff that they have. 'Kliff's really done a nice job everywhere he's been, offensively.' Kingsbury's NFL career may not have gotten very far, but he did get a Super Bowl ring from that victory over the Panthers. Vrabel helped make it happen on both sides of the ball, catching a 1-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter of the season's final game.

Panthers joint practice observations: Tetairoa McMillan bounces back, Bryce Young praised
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This summer has been all about the bounce-back for Carolina Panthers rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan. And so it was again Wednesday for the No. 8 pick, who dropped a pass in the end zone during the joint practice against the Cleveland Browns — only to redeem himself a couple of minutes later by pulling down a touchdown pass from Bryce Young during seven-on-sevens. Advertisement McMillan also had a drop Tuesday, but the elements had something to do with that one. The Panthers practiced two hours in a hard rain ahead of the practice with the Browns. But the teams received a break with the weather Wednesday, when the rains stopped before the start of the joint session and didn't resume until both coaches were talking to their teams afterward. The practice wrapped up with a diving touchdown catch by young wideout Brycen Tremayne in the same end zone where McMillan had hooked up with Young earlier. Panthers coach Dave Canales saw McMillan's drop as a learning opportunity: It came on a play when Young stopped him on a corner route by throwing behind the defender rather than leading McMillan to the pylon. 'I think that was a new one for T-Mac because he was like, 'Oh, shoot. This is a good spot for it,'' Canales said. 'Bryce kinda saw it. I was excited about that. Bryce turned around to me, we're both smiling. We would love him to catch the ball. He will.' And he did moments later when Young zipped the ball to McMillan on a slant route. McMillan arrived at his first camp with a built-in chemistry with Young after the two threw together before the draft. Young targeted McMillan a lot Wednesday, but chalked that up to the coverages the Browns' secondary was playing. There's been practices where it's been him, it's been Adam (Thielen), X (Xavier Legette), all the way down. So that's how it went today,' Young said. 'We want to make sure we do whatever's best for the team, take advantage of what the defense gave us.' Other observations from the Browns-Panthers practice: The last time the Browns were in Charlotte, Matt Rhule was still the Panthers' coach and Baker Mayfield was facing his former team after Cleveland traded him to Carolina in the offseason. Defensive end Myles Garrett had two of the Browns' sacks on Mayfield in Cleveland's 26-24 win in the 2022 season opener. Advertisement Garrett had never faced Young before Wednesday. But the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year clearly was familiar with Young, who returned from a five-week benching last season to play well down the stretch. Garrett said Young looks a lot more comfortable in the pocket than early in his career. 'I think they really rallied around him and they're seeing that he can lead this team and do well,' Garrett said. 'The playmaking and game-changing ability hasn't changed. I think it's just him finding his own confidence, being comfortable in the role and then allowing him to lead and standing behind him, I think that was big for him. And he's only going to continue to settle in and become a bigger and bigger playmaker.' The protection was mostly strong and Chuba Hubbard ran the ball well. And Canales thought the offense played with physicality. What he didn't like was a lapse during the second team period, when officials called three delay-of-game and two false-start penalties (but didn't stop the play) on the Panthers. 'It got sloppy,' Canales said. 'We can't have that. We're gonna put ourselves in really bad spots when we're putting ourselves in first-and-15. Or if it's a third-and-6 and we have a false start. All of a sudden it's third-and-11, makes it really hard.' A day after he was listed No. 1 on the Panthers' first depth chart, veteran kicker Matthew Wright took advantage of drier conditions (compared to Tuesday) and wider goal posts for a perfect day. Kicking on standard goal posts for the first time in camp — Browns kickers took aim at the narrow posts — Wright went 5-for-5 on field goals. Canales has been alternating kickers each day. If he sticks with that plan, it would mean Ryan Fitzgerald will get the attempts during Friday's preseason game. The rookie from Florida State went 1-for-5 on Tuesday in the rain and on the skinny posts. Panthers safety Tre'von Moehrig conceded Wednesday was something of a rarity: A joint practice with no major melees. 'I think it was good,' said Moehrig, the former Raider. 'Mutual respect between both teams. We played in between the whistles and we're cool afterwards. So it was pretty smooth.' At the urging of Canales and Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, veterans from both teams met before practice to discuss what Canales called the 'rules of engagement' — no cheap shots, no diving at legs, etc. The cooler-than-normal temperatures and absence of fans also might have helped keep the peace. Advertisement And while tempers flared a few times, teammates would intervene and prevent things from escalating. 'I saw two groups come in there not to throw haymakers and blindside shots, but to pull the guys apart,' Canales said. 'They were kind of jawing at each other in a playful way, big smiles and a lot of juice. I can't dream of a better situation.' • Canales plans to play Young and the other starters 8 to 12 plays on Friday, saying ideally that would be one drive for the offense. That was the extent of Young's preseason action last year, although that one drive didn't come until the third game against Buffalo. But Young didn't blame his slow start in the regular season on his lack of preseason work. 'I think it will be great for us. A lot of familiar faces, but obviously some new pieces. And every year we're a new team,' Young said. 'I think it will be a great thing for myself, all of us to kind of get our feet wet a little bit in the preseason.' • Panthers linebacker Claudin Cherelus left practice early with a groin injury, which would be a blow to the special teams units if it turns out to be serious. Cherelus, who played in 13 games last year, had a nice pass breakup before getting injured. • Diontae Johnson has changed teams a few times since the Panthers traded him to Baltimore last October. Johnson joined the Browns on a one-year deal in May, and has been part of Cleveland's receiving rotation in camp. But Johnson didn't appear to make any splash plays Wednesday (it was tough to see parts of practice from where the media was stationed) and ended the day with a clean uniform.
