Tyler Smith: Super Bowl is "realistic goal" for Cowboys

NBC Sportsa day ago
With the launch of training camps comes unbridled optimism, for most teams.
Cowboys guard Tyler Smith is feeling that optimism about his own team, even if it's been 30 years since Dallas advanced to the NFC Championship.
Asked about his team's goals for 2025, Smith said this, via Todd Archer of ESPN.com: 'Super Bowl champions. That's always the expectation.'
It's the expectation for plenty of the 31 teams that eventually won't make it to the top of the mountain.
'I think it's a realistic goal, yeah,' Smith said.
Why is it realistic?
'Because we can win a Super Bowl,' Smith said. 'Why not? Why can't we win? Do you think it's unrealistic?'
It's realistic, technically. They are one of the 32 teams that have a chance to do it. Whether they'll be good enough to overcome the elite teams in the NFC and then to outscore the eventual AFC champion is a different issue.
'I think we built a great core on offense; the addition of [receiver] George [Pickens] and all the other key pieces,' Smith said. 'I think drafting [guard Tyler] Booker [in the first round], he's going to be a hell of a guy just to bolster the front line. And we have many guys across the board, but those are some of the guys who are the key pieces on what we do this year.'
Smith isn't wrong. But there are many variables, starting with health. A rash of injuries can derail expectations. Even if the Cowboys manage to avoid losing key players for extended stretches, can they compete with the likes of the Eagles, Lions, Buccaneers, 49ers, Rams, Commanders, Vikings, Packers?
While the team's three decades of Super Bowl futility are irrelevant to whatever happens this year, it's hard to forget about the forgettable seasons. Hovering over all of it is whether the front office can get linebacker Micah Parsons's contract situation resolved.
Even if he shows up on Monday, he likely won't be practicing until a deal is done. And that could be enough to make an early-season win become a loss, with that loss being the difference between winning the division or missing the postseason entirely.
They'll have a great opportunity, right out of the gates. They start the season in Philadelphia. Beat the Eagles, and they'll be on their way.
Either way, there will still be 16 more games to go. Which will include contests against all teams from the NFC North (which sent three teams to the postseason in 2024) and the AFC West (which did the same).
How realistic their chances are in January will depend directly on what they do from September through December.
Still, July is the time for seeing the glass as half full. Even if, yet again, it comes up empty.

Back in the game

From left, Masey Lewis, Matt Viator and Will Bressi talk at Southland Media Day Monday in San Antonio. (Matthew Bonnette/McNeese Athletics) SAN ANTONIO – A decade has passed since Matt Viator sat in front of the Southland Conference media and answered questions about an upcoming season. A lot has changed since then. No longer are the Cowboys the top dog in the league, and Viator is no longer part of the old guard. Now, he's again the head coach at McNeese State, but he's trying to lead the Cowboys back up the SLC mountain, not stay on top of it. 'This has been exciting,' Viator said Monday at the Southland Conference Media Day in the San Antonio Convention Center. 'I'm highly motivated not to relive the past but for the future.' Viator returns to McNeese after nine seasons away from the program he built. His 78 wins are tied for the most in program history. In his first 10 years as the Cowboy head coach, Viator won four Southland titles, made the playoffs five times, and was named the league's Coach of the Year on three occasions. None of that matters now. 'This is a great opportunity for me,' said Viator. 'The McNeese program means a lot to me. The transition back has been good.' The program has not made the playoffs since Viator left and went 0-11 just two years ago. Last year, the Cowboys bounced back to go 6-6, but they haven't had a winning season since 2019. Viator wants that to change. 'I want to see McNeese get back to the standard it once had,' said Viator. The fans are excited for sure. Season ticket sales are up 70 percent from a year ago ,and the buzz is all over town. 'It is really exciting to see the fans getting involved,' said Viator. 'We have a great fanbase and want to reward them.' Viator also wanted to reward the players who elected to stay with the program. 'I wanted to give them a chance if they wanted to stay with us,' Viator said. 'I'm glad the ones that stayed are with us.' Viator brought two of his returning players with him to San Antonio, offensive lineman Will Bressi and defensive end Masey Lewis. Both have seen the difference with Viator's return. 'We are focused much more on the details every day at work,' said Bressi. 'We work on the small things to get better each practice.' Lewis pointed out how much the defense has been through over the years and what this season means to them. 'We have been together and have been through a lot,' Lewis said. 'We are a close group that can go through anything now.' This isn't a rewind for the coach. It is a start of an entirely new era. 'I still park in the same spot I did before, still take the same elevator up to my office, and see some of the same people,' said Viator. 'But a lot has changed since I was last here and I think for the better. That's what makes this exciting.' For him and McNeese fans.

Former NFL Star Blasts Jerry Jones Over Micah Parsons Comment

Football is finally in the air again as Dallas Cowboys training camp kicks off July 22. One of the hottest topics entering camp is the situation surrounding Micah Parsons' contract. The two-time All-Pro pass-rusher is headed into the final year of his contract, and he's set to earn $24 million, which is a massive increase over the $5.4 million cap hit from 2024. Still, those numbers are paltry compared to what the 26-year-old four-time Pro Bowler is set to earn on his next deal, especially considering Pittsburgh Steelers superstar T.J. Watt just reset the market with an NFL record $41 million average for pass-rushers. Odds are, Parsons and the Cowboys will eventually come to a contract agreement that keeps him in Dallas for several more years to come. Yet, most teams would already have locked one of their biggest franchise cornerstones in, long before the eve of training camp. While other stars may begin a contract holdout if they are entering a contract year, Parsons is already in Oxnard, ready to begin camp with his team. In a perfect world, he'd already have a contract extension in place, yet this situation has been filled with drama. It didn't help when Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stoked the flames on Monday with his controversial comments regarding Dak Prescott and Parsons, who both missed time due to injury last season. That's when Jones got a bit testy. 'Just because we sign him doesn't mean we're gonna have him. He was hurt six games last year. Seriously. Contracts are four, five years, OK? There's a lot of water under the bridge if you step out there and do something in the first two or three. You can get hit by a car, seriously. So there's a lot to look at over a lot of years that could make a big difference. Have you ever heard of any clubs committing to players and then they didn't pan out after they committed to them? We have.' Jerry Jones on Micah Parsons For the record, Parsons didn't miss six games last year. He was out for four of them, and he still recorded his fourth consecutive double-digit sack season (12). While Jones's comments were eye-opening, so was what happened afterward, when future Hall of Famer and former Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt was critical of the Cowboys' owner's comments on X. Perhaps the craziest part about it all is the fact that Parsons retweeted Watt's comments, clearly taking the side that goes against the man who cuts his checks. In other words, Parsons is clearly miffed. Mike Tyson reveals that he's shockingly never heard of Warriors legend Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson made the shocking decision to leave the Golden State Warriors last offseason, signing a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks. As part of the "Splash Brothers" backcourt pairing with Stephen Curry, he helped lead the franchise to four championships in his 13 seasons with the organization -- two of which he missed entirely due to injury. Thompson was named to five All-Star teams, two All-NBA teams and one All-Defensive team during his tenure with the franchise. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest shooters of all-time as his 2,697 three-pointers made rank fifth all-time -- trailing only Curry, James Harden, Ray Allen and Damian Lillard. Curry is the only member of that group who has connected from distance at a higher percentage than Thompson, who has shot 41.1% from three-point range for his career. Despite all of his accomplishments, International Boxing Hall of Famer Mike Tyson has never heard of the Warriors legend. He appeared on "The Big Podcast with Shaq", where Adam Lefkoe asked him about Thompson's relationship with rapper Megan Thee Stallion. Tyson revealed he didn't know the future Hall of Fame guard. "Did you see the news about the new hot couple," TNT Sports' Adam Lefkoe asked. "It is Klay Thompson and Megan Thee Stallion." Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp "Who, who," Boxing legend Mike Tyson questioned. "Who's Klay Thompson, though?" "He plays basketball," Lefkoe responded. "He was on the Warriors. He's one of the greatest shooters of all-time. He's now on the Dallas Mavericks and he's with Megan Thee Stallion." Despite Lefkoe explaining who Thompson was, Tyson seemed genuinely confused. The four-time champion has been in headlines recently for the high profile nature of his relationship with the three-time Grammy Award winning rapper. The couple went public with their relationship earlier this month, leading to plenty of online discussions. While his girlfriend has plenty of star power, it is surprising that Tyson had never heard of Thompson as he was a pivotal part of the greatest sports dynasty of the past decade. More NBA:
