150 student doctors match into local, national residencies
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Over 150 area student doctors were matched into local and national residencies on Friday morning, March 21, in at the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine in Las Cruces, the college said in a news release.
Burrell College said Match Day was held on Friday morning at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Rd. in Las Cruces.
'Match Day is when the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) unveils the results of residency and fellowship applications,' read the news release. 'Governed by the NRMP and accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), Match Day ensures a standardized process for pairing residency programs with qualified candidates.'
'We are immensely proud of our students and their success in obtaining residency positions across the country and especially within our mission regions,' John Hummer, president of Burrell College, said.
'Match Day represents the culmination of years of dedication and the beginning of their careers as physicians of whom we as a nation need more than ever,' he added.
Burrell College said student doctors simultaneously opened envelopes containing their match placements in an 'emotionally charged moment.'
'Our students have worked tirelessly to reach this milestone, and we celebrate their achievements as they take the next step in their medical careers,' Dr. William Pieratt, dean and chief academic officer of Burrell College, said.
Burrell College said the transition to residency cycle begins in September during applicants' final year of medical school. Applicants apply to residency programs in specialties of their choice, and throughout the fall and early winter, they interview with those programs.
In February, applicants rank in order of true preference the programs where they wish to train, and program directors rank in order of true preference the applicants they wish to train. Those confidential rank order lists are then submitted to the NRMP, which processes them using a computerized mathematical algorithm to match applicants with programs, Burrell College added.
In 2024, Burrell College successfully placed 144 graduating doctors into residency programs across the U.S., reinforcing the college's commitment to improving health care access and training highly skilled physicians, according to the news release.

Santa Teresa Industrial Arsenic Treatment Facility passes most recent arsenic test, CRRUA says
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Santa Teresa Industrial Arsenic Treatment Facility (STIATF) has passed its most recent arsenic test, the Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA) said in a press release on Wednesday, June 4. The CRRUA says the STIATF's most recent arsenic tests are at 6.9 parts per billion (ppb), which is below the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Maximum Contaminate Level (MCL) for arsenic of 10 ppb. The CRRUA says the latest result is from samples taken on Wednesday, May 21. In CRRUA's voluntary monthly arsenic tests for April, results for the STIATF were at 12 ppb. Two voluntary follow-up tests by CRRUA were 12 ppb on May 6 and 8 ppb on May 14, the utility said. The STIATF is one of four arsenic treatment facilities operated by the CRRUA. CRRUA says its four Arsenic Treatment Facilities (ATFs) are currently compliant based on the New Mexico Environment Department's Running Annual Average (RAA). 'It is a proactive process we undertake to keep our customers constantly informed about water quality,' said CRRUA Executive Director Juan Crosby. El Paso hospital celebrates Project Search students
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — An El Paso hospital celebrated its first class of students who made their way through a program designed to give them job skills and find employment. On Monday, June 2, the Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus celebrated its inaugural class of Project Search students with a graduation ceremony. This program provides opportunities for students with disabilities to learn job skills. The Sierra Campus is the fourth hospital within the The Hospitals of Providence network to have the program. At Sierra Campus, students started back in the fall. Throughout the school year, students are immersed in departments throughout the hospital and given the opportunity to learn new skills. Upon completion of the year-long program, many students will receive job offers within the hospital or in businesses throughout the community, The Hospitals of Providence said. 'We are truly proud to have welcomed this first cohort of Project Search students at the Sierra Campus this year and to have these incredible students as a part of our team – and to see them graduating today is remarkable,' said David Byrd, chief executive officer for The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus. 'Each one of these students has made incredible contributions to our hospital and they've made us better as leaders – we are so proud of them and can't wait to see the phenomenal things they are going accomplish.
