US Open announces stellar cast for mixed doubles

New York, July 30 (UNI) The US Open has confirmed 14 of the pairings that will compete for $1m (£749,077) in next month's controversial mixed doubles event.
Organisers were heavily criticised in February after announcing that the mixed doubles competition would be a standalone event on August 19-20 - before the hard court Grand Slam begins on August 24.
British number one Emma Raducanu and five-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz are one of six wildcard pairings, with eight teams gaining direct entry.
The US Open said a further two wildcard entries will be announced at a later date.
Of the 14 teams named so far, there are eight men and six women ranked in the top 10 in singles, and nine Grand Slam singles champions.
Venus Williams takes up one of the wildcard places alongside fellow American Reilly Opelka.
Wimbledon singles champions Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner have direct entry with their respective partners Casper Ruud and Emma Navarro, according to a BBC news.
British number one Jack Draper also goes into the draw via that route, partnering Spain's Paula Badosa.
Last year's mixed doubles winners Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori - who described the scheduling change as a "profound injustice" in a joint statement in February, and dubbed the new format "a pseudo-exhibition focused only on entertainment and show" - have received a wildcard entry.

"We're A Young Team But...": Shubman Gill's Blunt Message After Victory In 5th Test Against England

India captain Shubman Gill said Monday that squaring the Test series with England at 2-2 "means so much" after his side won a thrilling match at the Oval by six runs. England arrived on the final day of the five-game series needing just 35 runs with four wickets in hand to complete a remarkable chase of 374 but were blown away on a morning of unbearable tension. Mohammed Siraj took three of the four wickets to fall to finish with figures of 5-104. "It means so much," Gill told the BBC. "This was a very hard-fought series. Both teams throwing punches and you could never really predict after day four who was going to win the match. "We are a young team but before the start of the series we spoke about how we didn't want to be looked at as a young team... and I think we showed that today." England captain Ben Stokes, who missed the Oval match with an injury, said it had been an "incredible series", with all five matches going to a fifth and final day. "So much has been put into this series from both teams," said the all-rounder. "The commitment and energy has been outstanding. "Stood here now, we're bitterly disappointed we couldn't get the series win but myself being a massive advocate of the game of Test cricket, this series has been an unbelievable advert for it across the world. "All the doubters saying it's dying a death, this series has said the opposite." England head coach Brendon McCullum described the game as one of the "all-time best Test matches". "We turned up today with high hopes, but Mohammed Siraj and the passion of the Indian boys was too strong and ultimately they deserve to win this Test match," he said. "We had our chances. We will look back on our dropped catches and the position we were in with the bat. You have to tip your caps sometimes, a guy playing in his fifth Test match bowling 30 overs, and 90mph to get the job done -- fair play. "You never expect things to go according to plan."

Bayer Leverkusen extends Patrik Schick's contract until 2030

Bayer Leverkusen has extended a contract for Czech Republic striker Patrik Schick until 2030, the German Bundesliga club said on Monday. Schick's original deal was to expire in 2027. The announcement came after a string of key players left the club this off-season. They include midfielder Granit Xhaka, attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, right back Jeremie Frimpong, and defender Jonathan Tah—all crucial to Leverkusen's league and cup double in 2024. Also, coach Xabi Alonso departed for Real Madrid. Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, who was appointed in May to replace Alonso, is faced with a big rebuild due to the departures. Leverkusen's off-season spending so far has gone on American attacking midfielder Malik Tillman from PSV Eindhoven and former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah, while the club has also signed Brentford's highly rated goalkeeper Mark Flekken. 'Bayer 04 is working hard to assemble a top team for the future,' Schick said. 'I firmly believe that we will continue to play a significant role in the Bundesliga and in Europe.'

IND vs ENG: ‘We wanted to be a gun team and I think we showed that today…': Shubman Gill on the last day fightback against England

Playing in his first Test series as a captain, Shubman Gill not only became the top run getter in the Anderson-tendulkar Trophy with an aggregate of 754 runs at an average of 75.40 but also led the Indian fightback in the series with the six-run win at The Oval on Monday resulting in the series being tied 2-2. With England needing 35 runs with four wickets in hand, Indian team were led by pacers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna as England fell short by six runs from the 374-run target. Gill has hailed the 'young' Indian Test team and shared how they wanted to be a 'gun team' and showed it on Monday. 'It means so much. This was a very hard-fought series. Both teams throwing punches and you could never really predict after day four who was going to win the match. We are a young team but before the start of the series, we spoke about how we didn't want to be looked at as a young team. We wanted to be a gun team and I think we showed that today. (On Test cricket) Nothing beats it. It's the most rewarding format. You work so hard over five days and even before the Test starts, there's so many mental and physical challenges in this format. Once you're able to succeed, it's the most satisfying and rewarding format,' Gill told BBC's Test Match Special. England looked set to win the series 3-1 with Joe Root and Harry Brook taking the team to 3-1 for 3 at one stage on Sunday chasing the 374-run target. But with Indian pacers taking four wickets in the last one hour of the play and reducing England to 339 for 6 at the end of the fourth day's play. It meant that the match went into the final day. With Brook and Joe Root falling against Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna on the fourth day, Gill talked about the Indian pacer's plans and how they pulled things after the fall of Harry Brook led by Siraj and Krishna.. 'This is cricket. You never know. Once you're in the game, you want to be ruthless as possible and not give the opposition any bit of of space but with a couple of wickets after Brook, we had that little bit of space and it's never easy with the ball swinging and the pressure on the opposition, not easy to bat, so we wanted to make sure they kept feeling the pressure. The spell from Siraj and Prasidh really changed the game for us and those are the ones that kept believing we can pull this game through. With 60, 70-odd runs to win with seven wickets in hand you don't get to see many games like this. Very happy to get this over the line, a little bit of luck for us,' shared Gill. With England all-rounder Chris Woakes being injured on the first day of The Oval Test having dislocated his shoulder, the final day also saw Woakes coming out to bat after the fall of the wicket of Josh Tongue with 17 runs still needed. Siraj would remove Atkinson two overs later to spark off Indian celebrations. Gill also hailed Woakes' effort on the final day. 'Very, very brave. I didn't expect him to come out like that, batting with one hand, the other in the sweater, but good on him for showing that courage.' Gill said.
