India Post helps transform geolocation with DIGIPIN
The DIGIPIN is a collaborative effort of India Post, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, National Remote Sensing Centre and Indian Space Research Organisation.
'The PIN code was used for sorting mail. But its usage was limited as many people did not care to write it down and much of the addressing and delivery was down to local knowledge and information. The DIGIPIN is a machine-readable code that can help mail delivery even when drones will be deployed for the purpose,' said Mr. Prasad.
With enhanced location accuracy, DIGIPIN is expected to be very useful during emergencies as it can generate precise geographic coordinates ensuring faster response times.
However, as the DIGIPIN is a latitude and longitude based grid its use for multi-storeyed building complexes in urban areas is likely to be a challenge.
The DIGIPIN is part of the IT 2.0 rollout of the India Post where it will be integrated with mobile devices provided to the staff for carrying out online postal, financial and insurance transactions.
In the pipeline is a digital address layer, similar to the UPI ID, which has helped eliminate the recall and use of banking information. The digital address is expected to allow users to generate unique and customised labels (such as username@domain) to represent their DIGIPIN and descriptive addresses and manage this information.
Interestingly, the 4 X 4 grid of India encompasses areas in neighbouring countries of Pakistan, Myanmar and Bangladesh and generates the DIGIPIN for areas in those countries as well.

Paytm waits on mkt cap rule to ramp up UPI: MD & CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma
Financial technology major Paytm will further deepen its efforts to expand its footprint on India's real-time payments system — Unified Payments Interface (UPI) — once market share caps on third-party players come into effect, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Vijay Shekhar Sharma said on Tuesday. He added that consumer and merchant payments continue to present a growing opportunity, with the model's viability driven by merchant discount rates on select payment instruments and subscription-based revenues. '…we've restored the high UPI success rates that Paytm has long been known for. This has been made possible by the deep integration with our partner banks, our focus on technology, and the continued support from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)… Once the market share caps are imposed, we are ready to move faster and go deeper on market expansion,' Sharma said in a letter to shareholders. The reference to a market share cap comes as NPCI, the apex retail payments body, has extended the deadline to implement a 30 per cent cap on third-party UPI apps by two years, until December 2026. NPCI is seeking to introduce a market cap to address potential concerns such as concentration risks among top players. PhonePe and Google Pay continue to dominate the UPI ecosystem, with both entities controlling more than 80 per cent of UPI transactions in volume terms. Sharma said that the Noida-based digital payments and financial services company was committed to being artificial intelligence-first in terms of its offerings and processes. As of June 2025, Paytm's market share was recorded at 6.9 per cent, according to data from the NPCI website. Sharma indicated that the company would continue to expand internationally. 'Our international expansion will be deliberate, with a long-term view and a 1,000-day commitment to meaningful results,' he said. This comes on the back of building 'value-accretive services' for the company's merchants to grow and retain customers. 'These are products that extend our stack and unlock monetisation beyond transactions. These solutions are already showing promise in India, and we're beginning to explore international opportunities where small businesses remain underserved,' he explained. At its meeting in March, the company's board of directors, based on the recommendations of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee, approved a fixed annual remuneration of ₹4 crore for Sharma, along with other company benefits, for the period from April 2025 to December 2027. His remuneration for 2024-25 (FY25) stood at ₹4.47 crore. One97 Communications, the company that operates the Paytm brand, reported a turnaround with a consolidated profit of ₹122.5 crore in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025–26, against a net loss of ₹838.9 crore in Q1FY25. Paytm had posted a net loss of ₹539.8 crore in the fourth quarter of FY25.

SBI UPI services to be temporarily unavailable on THIS day. Check timings
State Bank of India (SBI) has announced a scheduled maintenance activity which will cause a brief disruption in Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services on August 6, 2025. SBI has informed that its UPI services will not be available for 20 minutes from 1:00 am to 1:20 am on August 6, 2025, due to the scheduled maintenance. The bank's official notice on X (formerly Twitter) read, 'Due to scheduled maintenance activity, SBI UPI services will be temporarily unavailable from 01:00 hrs to 01:20 hrs on 06.08.2025 (IST)." The bank further added, "Customers may continue to use UPI Lite Services for uninterrupted service. We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers.' The public sector bank has advised customers to use UPI Lite for continued digital transactions during the downtime. UPI Lite will remain fully functional even when the main UPI channel is under maintenance, as conveyed by the bank. UPI Lite is designed for small-value transactions, acting as an on-device wallet for faster payments. It allows users to make payments without entering a UPI PIN, particularly useful for low-value transactions and in areas with poor network connectivity. Follow these steps to enable UPI Lite on your mobile: Open your UPI App (Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm) Click on the home screen of the App to get the option of enabling UPI Lite. After reading the terms and conditions, enter the amount to add in UPI Lite and select the linked SBI bank account. Insert your UPI pin and UPI Lite will be enabled successfully.
