Kota Kinabalu: Kampung Kobuni in Inanam has been chosen as the main venue for the Asean Youth Volunteer Programme 2025 (AYV 2025) currently taking place in Sabah, bringing together 40 youths from 11 Asean member countries in a regional effort to foster cultural exchange and volunteerism. The seven-day programme, from July 12 to 19, is organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia in conjunction with the Asean-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025, aiming to empower youth through community development, environmental awareness and cultural immersion activities.
Advertisement Village head Aji Rombuton, 66, said the involvement of the community in the programme is a recognition of the villagers' ongoing commitment to preserving local culture and supporting homestay tourism initiatives. 'This village has long been known and has participated in various programmes even before AYV. The residents are always open to visitors and proudly uphold our local culture as our strength. 'Activities conducted include beautifying the community hall with mural paintings, traditional games, gotong-royong (communal work), cultural exchanges and environmental awareness programmes involving both villagers and international participants. 'The Kobuni Cultural Hall also serves as the venue for traditional performances, heritage showcases, and ethnic cooking demonstrations, offering participants a first-hand experience of the local way of life,' he said during the AYV 2025 Welcoming Dinner on Sunday. Homestay Desa Cinta Kobuni and Homestay Id Kalangadan recently received the Asean Homestay Standard Award (AHSA) in recognition of their achievements in preserving cultural heritage, boosting local economy and practising internationally recognised sustainable tourism. Sos Solihen, a participant from Cambodia, described his experience in AYV 2025 as heartfelt and strengthening regional ties. 'We were welcomed like family. Sharing meals with our host families and joining village activities were truly meaningful,' he said. Meanwhile, Brunei participant Aqilah Aziemah Junaidi expressed her excitement in contributing to a solar panel installation project and said she looks forward to sharing the experience with her community back home. 'This programme is inspiring — it shows how young people can be agents of change at the grassroots level,' she said. For Jeremiah Lucas Jugo, a Sarawak native representing Malaysia, AYV 2025 serves as a platform to connect youths from diverse backgrounds through service and cultural understanding. 'Our identities may differ, but this programme unites us on the basis of humanity and Asean solidarity. 'It also reinforces Sabah's image as a state rich in cultural diversity and strong rural communities, proving that even a small village like Kobuni can become a ground for meaningful regional collaboration,' he added. AYV 2025 gathers youth from Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines and Laos. According to the Asean Secretariat's website, youth make up one-third of the Asean population and are expected to number over 220 million by 2038. Therefore, empowering young people through initiatives like AYV 2025 is crucial in shaping a more inclusive and resilient regional future. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warships berth in Penang for Asean naval gathering

Naval networking: Warships from Asean region docking at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal for naval events from Aug 15 to 22 under Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship 2025. — ZHAFARAN NASIB/The Star GEORGE TOWN: Ten warships carrying 1,600 crew members have berthed at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal for a week to strengthen regional naval ties. This comes ahead of the Asean Navies' City Parade (ANCP) at the Esplanade in Padang Kota Lama tomorrow. The public will also be allowed to board several of them to see their systems up close. Seven of the warships are from other Asean nations and three from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). RMN offshore patrol vessel KD Kedah arrived yesterday to mark a series of maritime defence events until Aug 22 under Malaysia's Asean chairmanship 2025. It was followed by frigates KD Lekiu and KD Lekir, corvettes RSS Vigour (Singapore), BRP Antonio Luna (Philippines), KRI Bung Tomo (Indonesia), VPNS Quang Trung (Vietnam), UMS Kin Sin Phyu (Myanmar) and patrol vessels HTMS Krabi (Thailand) and KDB Darulaman (Brunei). Penang will also host three key Asean naval events during the week in George Town and Batu Ferringhi – the 19th Asean Navy Chiefs' Meeting (ANCM), the third Asean Multilateral Naval Exercise (Amnex) and the Asean Fleet Review (AFR). ANCM working committee deputy chairman Rear Admiral Datuk Pahlawan Mohd Fadzli Kamal Mohd Mohaldin said Amnex's opening ceremony and 'Port Phase' today will enable officers to finalise plans for joint sea exercises. RMN is also hosting the Naval Engineering Conference on the same day, where regional naval engineers will share innovations under the theme 'Innovation and Technology Towards Improving Ship Survivability at Sea'. He said the ANCP was an RMN initiative to promote naval traditions to the public. 'Its hosting in Penang holds historical significance for RMN, recalling the International Royal Fleet Review in May 1990, which involved 59 warships and 11,000 naval personnel from around the world. 'Activities will include marching of Asean and local contingents, cultural performances, maritime asset salutes, RMN helicopter flypasts and more,' he said. On Tuesday, the ANCM will bring together navy chiefs from all Asean countries to discuss maritime security, peace and stability at Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort. Delegates will then attend the Asean Chief Navy Interaction Programme at Penang Hill on Wednesday, which includes a tree-planting ceremony and the launch of the Asean Harmony Grove to mark Asean navies' commitment to the Asean Green Initiative. The AFR on Thursday will see all participating warships sail in formation through the northern strait. Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib is scheduled to attend as guest of honour. Malaysia assumed the role of Asean Chair this year with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.

Visitors may also tour the docked warships on Sunday (Aug 17) and see for themselves the capabilities and technologies used by these regional navy vessels. City Hall's vision for Kuala Lumpur includes easy movement via connected parks, rivers, urban forests

Kuala Lumpur Greening Plan: Park Connector Network project being launched in Wangsa Maju by Maimunah (left) along with representatives from Asean countries who were in Kuala Lumpur to participate in several Asean-related meetings in the city. — Courtesy photo KUALA LUMPUR is going greener in a big way, rolling out a 'green connector' network that will link parks, rivers and urban forests across the city. The project by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) aims to improve air quality, boost biodiversity and give residents more connected green spaces in which to walk and cycle. It will also create a natural habitat for urban wildlife. Under Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL2040), 256km of connectors will be built in three phases – quick wins in the first two years, medium-term works over five years and long-term projects over the next decade. 'Funding will come from a mix of federal and local government allocations, international green grants, private sector corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts and endowment funds. 'Upgrades will include pedestrian and cycling paths with solar-powered lights, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, rest stops and public WiFi, as well as landscaping with shady trees and greenery suited to each zone,' DBKL said in a statement. The network will be split into six zones – Upper Sanctuary, North East Loop, Vital Hub, South Suburb Loop, West Urban Loop and West Hill Loop. The plan also covers upgrading 26 major roads, rebranding 17 public parks, beautifying 14 river reserves, improving 44 pocket parks (25 existing and 19 new) and upgrading six retention ponds. The 'Kuala Lumpur Greening Plan: Park Connector Network' project was launched along the Sungai Bunus stretch in Wangsa Maju by Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif. The event was also attended by representatives from Asean countries who were in Kuala Lumpur to participate in the Asean Governors and Mayors Forum (AGMF), the Asean Sustainable Urbanisation Forum (ASUF) and the Meeting of Governors and Mayors of Asean Capitals (MGMAC). The ceremony was enlivened with a tree-planting session by representatives from all Asean capitals. DBKL added that the initiative would set a new regional benchmark in urban green infrastructure.
