Rossi thanks Fiorentina for ‘unforgettable' Pepito Day
The 38-year-old had seven goals in 30 senior caps for Italy, while he played at club level for the likes of Manchester United, Fiorentina, Villarreal and Genoa.
His career was blighted by injury problems, which eventually saw him hang up his boots in the summer of 2023.
Rossi had his testimonial match at the Stadio Franchi over the weekend, called Pepito Day, including star names such as David De Gea, Gabriel Batistuta, Luca Toni, Sebastien Frey, Mario Gomez and Francesco Toldo.
'It was an unforgettable evening, so thank you to the Viola fans, to Fiorentina and all the champions who came to Pepito Day,' Rossi told the official club website.
'I will never forget the last few days. Returning to the Stadio Franchi was an indescribable emotion, surrounded as I was by great champions and great friends.'
He was able to train at the Viola Park, the new structure that opened last year for all the various Fiorentina teams.
'I spoke to General Manager Alessandro Ferrari about the incredible structure that was wanted by President Rocco Commisso. It's the kind of training centre I would've dreamed of as a player, and now it is destined for the Fiorentina of the future, the young talents who will wear the Viola jersey.
'I was struck by these great prospects. With Saturday's event, we tried to explain how much sense of belonging and recognition there is at Fiorentina and its incredible fans. I was really moved to have experienced an unforgettable moment with my family.'
However, Rossi also joked that the retired players who participated in Pepito Day were feeling the effects afterwards.
'I must admit that the moment we got up from the dinner table to go home, nobody did it without a few groans. Even if we have aged a bit, we still saw that quality on the pitch.'

Roma working on loan deal for Manchester United's Jadon Sancho
Roma are working on a loan deal to sign Manchester United's Jadon Sancho. The Serie A side have made an offer for the England international but there is an acknowledgement that it would be a tricky deal to complete. Roma are also in talks to sign Aston Villa's Leon Bailey on loan as they look to add to their attacking options. Advertisement The Athletic reported on June 10 that Borussia Dortmund had expressed their interest to Sancho's representatives over a return to the club United paid £73million (now $98.9m) to sign him from in the summer of 2021. Sancho had options in England and around Europe that he was expected to explore before making a decision on his next step. His United contract runs until next June, with the option of a further year. The 25-year-old spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Chelsea, where he made 42 appearances. Chelsea's agreement with United last summer included an obligation to make the move permanent for £25m. The clause was triggered in April when it was mathematically guaranteed that Chelsea could not finish lower than 15th in the Premier League. However, Chelsea did not agree personal terms with Sancho and exercised the option to pay £5m to send him back to United. He scored five goals and provided ten assists during his time at Stamford Bridge, helping the side win the Conference League and finish fourth in the Premier League. Sancho was one of five United first-team players left out of their pre-season tour squad, alongside Marcus Rashford — who has since joined Barcelona on loan — Tyrell Malacia, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. The group were asked not to report for training until after 5pm, after Ruben Amorim and the rest of the first-team group had left Carrington, earlier this summer. Sancho has played 83 games for United, with his last appearance for the club in the 2024 Community Shield against rivals Manchester City, when he came on as a substitute. He only made three appearances for United in 2023-24 after a public disagreement with then-head coach Erik ten Hag, resulting in him being excluded from the squad and re-join Dortmund on loan in January 2024. Roma finished fifth in Serie A last season and will play in the Europa League this term under new head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. Spot the pattern. Liverpool Favorites To Retain Title As Premier League Season Kicks Off
Champions of England for a record-equalling 20th time in May, Liverpool could well bring the confetti out again in nine months as they begin the Premier League season firmly as the team to beat. Predictions are always a fool's errand, but it feels a fairly safe bet to suggest the Reds could retain their crown and pull one clear of Manchester United's tally of titles. The reasons for such confidence are two-fold. Liverpool were the best team in England by a long distance last term and triumphed at a canter, finishing 10 points clear of Arsenal. Arne Slot's debut season at Anfield was meant to be one of adjustment as he stepped into the nigh-on impossible role of replacing Jurgen Klopp. Instead, Liverpool hit the ground running under the Dutchman, winning 11 of their first 12 games, and never looked back. In the process Slot became the first Liverpool manager to win the title at the first time of asking after club legends Joe Fagan and Sir Kenny Dalglish. "To replace Jurgen is a big job and the manager did it in his own way and deserves a lot of credit," Virgil van Dijk said of Slot after Liverpool swept Tottenham aside to clinch the title at the end of April. "I don't think anyone from the outside world thought we would be Premier League champions." In the immediate aftermath of the Reds' triumph, Slot suggested the summer would hold an evolution rather than a revolution. 'Radical changes, you will probably not see,' he said. 'That [radical changes]But radical changes have followed over the past three months or at least as close to radical as possible for a team that won the league with such ease. Will Liverpool's summer spending spree pay off? The Reds set a new club transfer record by signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for $158 million (£116 million), while Hugo Ekitike was nabbed from under Newcastle's nose. The signings of Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, meanwhile, revamped Liverpool's options at full-back and the arrival of Giovanni Leoni from Serie A side Parma will bolster Slot's options at centre-back. Liverpool's summer spending already exceeds $340 million, a staggering amount in any circumstance, even more so for the reigning champions. It marks the first time since 2018 and only the second since the turn of the century that the Reds have been the biggest spenders in the Premier League. And more may still be to come if the Reds are successful in landing Alexander Isak from Newcastle. Newcastle's stance has hitherto been that the Sweden international is not for sale, but their resolve is being tested. Isak, who is under contract for two more years with the Magpies, did not travel on their pre-season tour to Singapore and South Korea and has told the club he intends to explore new options. Newcastle have already knocked back a $150m offer from Liverpool and maintain they want north of $200m for the striker. The changes at Anfield have not been limited to arrivals, with several significant departures this summer. Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid in time for the Club's World Cup in June and was followed out of the door by Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, who joined Bayern Munich and Al-Hilal respectively. Jarrell Quansah moved to Bayern Leverkusen, while Caoimhin Kelleher left for Brentford. Overall, Liverpool recouped $226 million from player sales and the figure could rise further if Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa and Kostas Tsimikas are moved on before the transfer window shuts on September 1. While a stellar transfer window does not always immediately translate into stellar performances on the pitch, the early signings are promising. Wirtz has looked excellent in pre-season and assisted Ekitike's goal four minutes into the Community Shield on Sunday. 'Last season, we had a lot of ball possession, but that didn't always lead to promising situations," Slot said after Liverpool were beaten by Crystal Palace on penalties. 'We are better in creating and getting promising situations than we were, in my opinion, throughout the whole of last season.' That Liverpool ultimately lost the season's traditional curtain raiser at Wembley will not be a major worry for the Dutchman. Of far greater concern will be the fact that despite their summer spending spree, the Premier League champions remain somewhat light of options at centre-back. Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate may be one of the best defensive partnerships in the Premier League, but the former is 34 and the latter is in the final year of his contract. The fitness of both players must be managed carefully, particularly as Joe Gomez, their most obvious replacement, has made only 48 starts in the past five Premier League seasons. Against that backdrop the signing of 18-year-old Leoni is as much about bolstering Slot's options as it is about future-proofing. Slot has indicated he intends to rotate his team more this season than he did last term, but defence is one area where he may not be able to do so. Stellar Mo Salah remains key to Liverpool's plans If Liverpool are short at centre-back, they have plenty of attacking weapons at their disposal, none more lethal than Mohamed Salah. The reigning Premier League Player of the Year, the Egyptian enjoyed a stellar campaign last term, scoring 29 goals to win a fourth Golden Boot as the league's top scorer, equalling Thierry Henry's record in the process. Salah also registered 18 assists, matching the Premier League record for the most goal involvements in one season which was jointly held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer. At 33 years of age, Salah may be approaching the winter of his career, but he remains crucial to his team's chances of retaining their title and chasing a seventh Champions League triumph. Arguably the biggest question mark around Liverpool centres on how they will cope with Diogo Jota's tragic passing in a car crash. How the Reds deal with the devastating impact of such a tragedy remains to be seen. Van Dijk has spoken of the players' desire to honour Jota and to 'carry on his legacy' and retaining the Premier League title would be a fitting way for Liverpool to do so.

Manchester United vs Arsenal predicted lineups, team news, analysis
The Manchester United vs Arsenal predicted lineups were tough to put together as there are plenty of options for both Ruben Amorim and Mikel Arteta heading into the new season. MORE — Man United vs Arsenal preview, how to watch live info We know both managers are very clear on their formation and style of play and a big summer of recruitment for both has seen their options strengthened considerably. Below we reveal our Manchester United vs Arsenal predicted lineups, with analysis on the possible starters and combinations. Manchester United predicted lineup —- Bayindir —- —- Yoro —- De Ligt —- Maguire —- —- Diallo —- Ugarte —- Fernandes —- Dorgu —- —— Mbeumo —— Cunha —— ——- Sesko ——- The big question mark for United is whether Andre Onana will be fit to start in goal and if not Altay Bayindir will get the nod. In central defense there are plenty of options for the three center backs and it feels like Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt are the two who will start. It is between Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Ayden Heaven for the left-sided spot and Maguire may get the nod to help deal with Viktor Gyokeres. Out wide Amad Diallo and Patrick Dorgu will be the wing backs and Bruno Fernandes will start in a deeper central midfield role. Manuel Ugarte will probably get the nod alongside Fernandes ahead of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo due to his defensive work and mobility, but that is a toss of the coin. In attack Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha will start underneath fellow new signing Benjamin Sesko in a totally revamped forward line. Arsenal predicted lineup ——- Raya ——- —- White —- Saliba —- Gabriel —- Lewis-Skelly —- —— Odegaard —— Zubimendi —- Rice —— —— Saka —— Gyokeres —— Martinelli —— The back four is very settled for Arsenal and the only questions are whether Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori have been able to usurp Jurrien Timber and Myles Lewis-Skelly from their starting spots. Timber has been nursing an injury in preseason, so White may start. In midfield the trio of Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice are nailed on to start with the latter given more freedom to roam as new signing Zubimendi will plug the gaps defensively and keep things ticking over. In attack Gyokeres will start up top and Bukayo Saka will be on the right. It is very likely Gabriel Martinelli will get the nod on the left as Noni Madueke continues to settle in, while Kai Havertz is the odd player out but will be the first off the bench.
