Limerick's Fairview Rangers win FAI Junior Cup for tenth time

FAI Junior Cup final: Fairview Rangers 4 North End United 1
Fairview Rangers are FAI Junior Cup champions for the tenth time following a 4-1 victory over North End United at Turner's Cross.
Second half goals from Jason Cross, Josh McCarthy, and Rubin McCarthy were the difference, and that means the trophy is going to Limerick for the first time in five years.
North End United set up a big finish after Reece Murphy equalised following Jeffery Judge's opener, but it wasn't to be for a team managed by Gary Dempsey, an FA Youth Cup winner with Everton.
The Wexford kingpins, fresh from retaining their Premier Division crown, started fast by putting an inviting cross into the box and that was almost turned in by Cross.
This burst faded into a period of uncertainty for Fairview Rangers as their captain, former Cork City and Limerick FC midfielder Shane Duggan, went off injured.
They came through the challenge and managed to set up Judge for a close range finish at the St Anne's End in the 25th minute.
An opportunity to double Fairview's lead fell to Cian Kavanagh after the restart and the midfielder kicked the ball straight at Jason Maguire.
Gbadebo Habideen also found himself in space during this period, and the striker fired wide from right in front of the posts.
Fairview finished the half by creating two quick opportunities inside the box for Habideen and Adam Dore, and these were blocked down.
The game restarted with North End United winning a corner and Gary Delaney headed this narrowly wide.
Paul Murphy also broke through the Fairview midfield during this spell and the forward's shot went straight into the hands of Josh McCarthy.
Something was coming and it arrived from a corner after Paul Murphy knocked the ball on and Reece Murphy got in to score in the 59th minute.
What got Fairview over the line were the changes, as North End pushed for another equaliser, Cross headed in a corner in the 73rd minute.
The next time they got in that position, Oleg Vysochan found Josh McCarthy and the substitute side footed the ball in at the Shed End.
Fairview had one more in them, and that came from a neat moving involving Habideen. The striker dribbled into the area and saw his attempt saved by an onrushing Maguire. The loose ball went out to Rubin McCarthy, who hit the back of the net from right in front of the posts in the sixth minute of time added on.
FAIRVIEW RANGERS: Josh McCarthy; Jake Dillon, Brian Ahern (Blake Curran 67), Conor Kavanagh, Jason Cross, Jeffery Judge (Rubin McCarthy 90), Shane Duggan (Shane Carmody 21), Cian McNamara (Josh McCarthy 81), Gbadebo Habideen, Oleg Vysochan, Adam Dore (Daniel O'Neill 71).
NORTH END UNITED: Jason Maguire; Ayman Yousif, Todd Hynes, Reece Murphy, Gary Delaney, Alan Rhodes (Shane Dempsey 80), Ciaran Paige, John Pearce, Eoin Rhodes, Paul Murphy, Robert Kane (Craig McCabe HT).

'We had 24-hour armed guards' - Shamrock Rovers warned ahead of Kosovo trip

Shamrock Rovers have been told to prepare for an extremely hostile atmosphere in Kosovo this week. The Hoops are flying out on Wednesday to face Ballkani in Thursday's Europa Conference League third round, first-leg clash. It's a step into the unknown as no League of Ireland side has faced a team from Kosovo before, but Derry City boss Tiernan Lynch knows all about them. When Lynch was Larne manager between 2017 and 2024, he faced Kosovan teams on three occasions, and played Ballkani twice - in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, Larne were hammered 7-1 on aggregate after losing 4-1 at home and 3-0 away. The following year, it was a tighter affair after losing 1-0 at home but winning 1-0 in Kosovo and Larne then won on penalties. Larne also played in the same Stadiumi Fadil Vokrri that Shamrock Rovers will visit this week and Lynch has already given Stephen Bradley the lowdown. The first year we took a bit of a pasting and couldn't really deal with the hostility, we had 24-hour armed guards and all that goes with that. 'But Rovers are probably much more experienced than we were at that stage, and I think it's something they will deal with ok.' Rovers beat Derry City 2-0 at Tallaght Stadium on Sunday to open up a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier Division. And before that encounter, Lynch was happy to share some information on his own Ballkani experiences with Bradley. Managers Stephen Bradley and Tiernan Lynch before the game at Tallaght Stadium (Image: ©INPHO/Ryan Byrne) Rovers boss Bradley said: 'He was able to give me some pointers on everything that went on. That was helpful. But we'll be ready for them. It's an intimidating place, hostile. Ballkani are technically good - on the sides, pace, up top, real power, 6ft 3in, power and pace. I'm watching them and they remind me of Celje.' Graham Burke and Jack Byrne were not in the Rovers squad for Sunday's win over Derry and both will be assessed before Wednesday's flight to Kosovo. Bradley said: 'I know if I needed Graham to play, he could play and he wants to play, but I just don't want to risk someone and then we lose him for the next two months. 'He felt his quad. He said it was strange, he was out with his kids in the park, he just went home, lying in his chair and felt tight. That's usually how Graham gets injured, it's never a pull, it's always a little thing and he said, 'I just felt it'. So you have to listen to his body. 'He's been so good for us this year, he's the best in the country. I just don't want to lose him for a period of time. We'll make that decision closer to travel, but I won't take any chances with him. If I think there's any doubt, he won't travel. Jack is fine, a little knock but he's fine.' Meanwhile, Derry City boss Lynch is not throwing in the towel on the title race even though the third-placed Candystripes are now 11-points behind Rovers. Lynch said: 'You always have to believe. I'm not going to stand here and tell lies, 10 points clear with 10 games to go is going to be really difficult. But until I'm told mathematically that we are completely out of it, we have to go out in every game and have that belief.'
