Mets to celebrate 60th anniversary of The Beatles at Shea Stadium
Now, 60 years later, the New York Mets will honor the Fab Four's performance.
The team's Aug. 15 matchup against the Seattle Mariners is billed as "The Beatles Night" at Citi Field, featuring a performance by a Beatles tribute band aptly named 1964 the Tribute, an homage to the Fab Four's first tour of the U.S.
The first 15,000 fans at the game will also receive an exclusive replica of Shea Stadium, which was home to the Mets and New York Jets at the time of The Beatles' performance. The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by members of the game-day staff who worked the famous concert.
Finally, the Mets will put on a themed fireworks show following the game.

George Harrison and Eric Clapton collaborator Bobby Whitlock dies aged 77
Musician Bobby Whitlock, who co-founded the band Derek and the Dominos, has died aged 77. The keyboard player and vocalist was best known for forming the blues rock band with Eric Clapton in 1970, however they only ever released one album and broke up after a year. Whitlock also worked with The Beatles star George Harrison, playing on his 1970 triple album All Things Must Pass. This week it was announced that he had died. ABC Audio reported Whitlock's death, quoting manager Carol Kaye as saying: 'With profound sadness, the family of Bobby Whitlock announces his passing at 1:20am on Aug. 10 after a brief illness. He passed in his home in Texas, surrounded by family.' Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Whitlock was signed to Stax Records as a teenager, also becoming the first white artist signed to the label. His first recording credit came in 1967 when he supplied handclaps on Sam & Dave's single I Thank You. Between 1965 and 1968, he performed regularly in the Memphis area, playing organ with local soul band the Short Cuts before forming the Counts. Although there had been plans for him to work on a pop album, he instead decided to leave his home city and join a soul-revue band being forming in Los Angeles – Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, who accompanied the duo Delaney & Bonnie on their tours. Another member of the group was Clapton, however after disagreements, the band members that had been brought on board quit and instead went on to work on Harrison's album. Soon after they formed blues-rock band Derek and the Dominos – releasing their debut and only album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs in 1970, which has been considered by many as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. But after the album tanked commercially and failed to chart in the UK – as well as the band being wrapped up in drug consumption and personal conflicts – it fell apart after a year. After this Whitlock went on to forge a career as a solo artist, releasing his self-titled album in 1972, which also featured all members of his recently dissolved band. It was followed by Raw Velvet the same year and One of a Kind in 1975, however after this release he withdrew from the music industry. Whitlock previously said the decision was due to him having 'problems to deal with'. More Trending Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Whitlock lived on a farm in Mississippi, raising his children and doing occasional session work. He also had his own television show with Steve Cropper. In 1999 he resumed his solo career with the album It's About Time and in 2003 teamed up with his partner and musician CoCo Carmel to release a live album of the Dominos' songs. The couple later moved to Austin, Texas, and continued releasing music together. Other than his wife, Whitlock is also survived by his three children – Ashley Brown, Beau Whitlock and Tim Whitlock Kelly. Got a story? 'Weapons' horror film scores a box office victory
It's August, and horror and humor came to play. In a month that's long been known to let edgier movies thrive, Zach Cregger's highly anticipated horror film 'Weapons' did not disappoint, topping the box office during its debut weekend with $42.5 million domestically from 3,202 theaters. It made $70 million internationally. The film's success also handed its distributor, Warner Bros. Pictures, the seventh No. 1 opening of the year, and became the studio's sixth film in a row to debut with over $40 million domestically. 'Freakier Friday,' Disney's chaotic sequel to the 2003 classic, 'Freaky Friday,' took the second spot during its premiere weekend, earning $29 million in 3,975 North American theaters. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis return, this time for a double body-swapping between the mother-daughter duo and Lohan's teen daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter. Viral marketing tactics, coupled with strong social media word-of-mouth, boded well for both films' success, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the data firm Comscore. 'The top two films could not be more different, and that's what makes this weekend so appealing for moviegoers,' Dergarabedian said. 'Both are perfectly tailored for their audiences to react in real time over the weekend to these films and then post on social media.' 'Weapons' transports audiences to the small town of Maybrook, where 17 kids up and leave their homes at 2:17 a.m., leaving bewildered parents in their wake. The town is left to navigate the lingering effects of trauma through horror, paranoia and a touch of existential humor. The film is Cregger's follow-up to his solo directorial debut with the 2022 genre-bending horror, 'Barbarian.' That critically-acclaimed film had a slower start and smaller budget, but still topped the charts during its premiere with $10 million domestically and made a splash in the genre. 'Weapons' generated a lot of buzz for its strong reviews (95% on Rotten Tomatoes). 'The Internet's exploding right now between Friday and today. You just see that people are having a great time with it,' said Jeffrey Goldstein, president of Global Distribution for Warner Bros. 'It starts with an exceptional movie, an exceptional marketing campaign, and the date was exceptional too.' The success of the comedy-horror double premiere meant 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' surrendered its two-week run in the top spot and landed in the third position, bringing in $15.5 million domestically. The superhero movie enjoyed a strong $118 million debut, but stumbled in its second weekend. 'The Bad Guys 2,' which got a healthy start at the No. 2 spot during its premiere weekend, came in fourth place, earning $10.4 million domestically. 'The Naked Gun' had a similar fate, reaching the fifth position with $8.4 million in North American theaters. 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' which came in seventh this week, is expected to hit $800 million globally by Monday, according to NBC Universal, following a successful run in theaters. Warner Bros. started off slow this year, but made a comeback with the box-office hit, 'A Minecraft Movie,' which opened with $157 million domestically. Since then, movies like 'Sinners,' 'Superman' and now, 'Weapons,' have found success. The studio set 'a blueprint to how to create a perfect summer lineup,' Dergarabedian said. 'Weapons 'also joins a stream of successful horror movies this year, its opening numbers coming in just behind 'Final Destination: Bloodlines' and 'Sinners.' Liberty's Breanna Stewart targets return before end of month
August 10 - New York Liberty star forward Breanna Stewart is bidding to return to the court before her 31st birthday. That's Aug. 27, if you're counting the days or planning to send a card. The two-time WNBA MVP sustained a bone bruise in her right knee during New York's 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on July 26. "I feel great. I just finished working out on the court in the back," Stewart said. "And it's really just kind of giving my leg, the bone, a little bit of time while we have it. But hoping to be back sooner than later and really just wanting to be back with my team." Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello previously set late August as a tentative timeline for Stewart's return. "We want to be smart with it," Brondello said. "If we can get her back at the end of August, I think that's great. It's big picture ... so when she's ready. But keep it fresh for the playoffs. I know she'll be back before then. How early she gets back before the end of the (regular) season, I don't know." Stewart is averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 24 games (all starts) this season. A seven-time All-Star, Stewart was selected as the WNBA MVP in 2018 and 2023, the Finals MVP in 2018 and 2020 and the 2016 Rookie of the Year.
