Silent Witness and New Tricks creator Nigel McCrery dies
TV writer Nigel McCrery has died aged 71, his agent has confirmed.
The former police officer, who created the forensics series Silent Witness and the cold case show New Tricks, revealed last year he was diagnosed with an unspecified terminal illness.
United Agents wrote on social media: 'It's with a heavy heart that we share the news of screenwriter, author and producer Nigel McCrery's passing.
'As the creative mind behind such hits as the much loved long running BBC drama series Silent Witness and New Tricks, Nigel captivated and inspired audiences for years with his work.
'His numerous contributions to the arts will always be remembered. Nigel had an incredible career and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.'
McCrery, who served with the Nottinghamshire Constabulary, began Silent Witness in 1996 with the BBC programme about a police pathologist releasing its latest, 28th series, this year.
His 1950s-set medical drama Born And Bred, co-created with Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall, aired during the 2000s.
The TV writer also launched New Tricks, which follows the fictional Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad, in 2003 with Roy Mitchell.
The show starring Dennis Waterman, Amanda Redman, Alun Armstrong and James Bolam had strong ratings, before being axed in 2015 after 12 series.
McCrery also wrote non-fiction books about sport, the First World War and the Second World War.
These included The Footballers Who Fought And Died In The Great War, Into Touch: Rugby Internationals Killed in the Great War and Season in Hell: British Footballers Killed In The Second World War.
His book, The Vanished Battalion, was made into the 1999 war drama All The King's Men starring Sir David Jason and Dame Maggie Smith.
In October 2024, he told BBC Radio 4's Saturday Live programme that he had been told he was terminal recently, which he called 'quite a shock'.
'I mean people deal with their deaths in different ways, and I think it's all very, very individual to each of us,' he said.
'But I think for a little while you do go into shock – or I did, and I was in a bit of a state.'

Appearing on The One Show, Ritchie, 61, who plays Alfie Moon in the BBC soap, spoke about EastEnders' award-winning streak at the British Soap Awards last week. When Bell asked him whether he had spoken to Jason about it, Richie said: "I don't know yet! I might take him out for a beer." It appears that Shane Ritchie would not be the only one who would love to see Sir David on the Square. Fans were delighted that the 85-year-old presented the soap award to the EastEnders cast, taking to social media to sing his praises. 'Witnessing the David Jason presenting the award for best soap and then EastEnders winning might be one of the most surreal things I have ever experienced,' one person said on X. 'Sir David Jason announcing EastEnders for Best Soap?! My worlds have collided, and I can't cope,' another added. Grange Hill ran for three decades and launched the careers of many child actors, while others have struggled to cope with the fame and fortune that came with it Grange Hill, the groundbreaking BBC drama that first aired in 1978, was a school where detention wasn't just a threat and important social issues were brought to light. The show offered a realistic and honest look at the lives of secondary school pupils, tackling everything from racism and bullying to drug addiction and teenage pregnancy. David Walliams Nazi salute on Would I Lie To You 'unacceptable', BBC says
The BBC has said it was "unacceptable" for David Walliams to make two Nazi salutes during a recording of comedy panel show Would I Lie To You? this week. The comedian and children's author made the gestures during a segment in which a fellow panellist discussed a story about injuring their wrist while reportedly joined in with increasingly vigorous waves, which culminated in him holding out his arm in a Nazi show's production company and the BBC both described the gestures as "completely unacceptable" and said the segment would not be broadcast. However, as the discussion about George's experience continued, Walliams made the gesture again, adding a sexual gesture with his other hand. It's understood the exchange landed awkwardly in the studio. "The atmosphere was uncomfortable and weird," Topan said."I think Rob Brydon wanted to get past it as quickly as he could. David Walliams' team-mates looked unsure what to do and were not laughing... It was like an elephant in the room after that as the incident was early on in the recording and so the remainder of the show felt weird."After the recording, a different member of the audience posted on X: "I didn't have David Walliams doing a Nazi salute at the Would I Lie To You? Christmas taping on my 2025 bingo card."A spokesperson for Banijay UK, which owns the show's production company Zeppotron, said: "Any attempt at humour regarding this deeply offensive gesture, whether broadcast or not, is completely unacceptable in any context."It was immediately acknowledged during the recording that this segment would not be broadcast under any circumstances and we apologise to those who were at the recording for any offence caused."A BBC spokesperson said: "The use of such an offensive gesture is completely unacceptable and we apologise to all at the recording for the offence caused."Walliams, who also hosts a podcast with his former Little Britain co-star Matt Lucas, has not appeared on terrestrial television since left his role as a judge on ITV show Britain's Got Talent that year after an audio recording of him making insulting comments about contestants were made public.
