Interfaith couple's marriage notice circulates online, triggers privacy concerns
The incident has triggered fears of the couple being targeted, especially after a post on X urged users to "save the girl from the man," alongside their photographs and address.
This comes months after a similar case in Udham Singh Nagar, where the SMA notice of another interfaith couple, already under police protection on the directions of the Uttarakhand high court, was leaked and widely circulated online. At the time, social media posts called for protests and urged people to report the "love jihadi," despite the couple firmly denying any allegations of religious conversion.
In the latest case, the couple had submitted their application earlier this week at the SDM Sadar's office. As mandated by law, it states their intent to solemnise the marriage within three calendar months. Officials said the notice is a public document under the law, and "not much can be done to prevent its circulation".
"As per the process, time has been given for objections. The woman's father has also submitted one. We will hold hearings in the coming days and proceed accordingly," said SDM Hari Giri.
He added that the couple has not yet approached authorities about a privacy breach or threats, but appropriate action will be taken if they do.

Bull injures elderly women in Ludhiana's Libra village attack caught on CCTV.
Ludhiana: A 65-year-old woman sustained serious injuries after a rampaging bull attacked her and another elderly woman outside their home in Libra village near Khanna, raising concerns over stray cattle management in Punjab's rural areas. The incident occurred on Friday but came to light on Saturday when CCTV footage of the attack went viral. The injured woman, Sardaran Parveen, was sitting with neighbours outside her home when the bull charged, injuring her severely and leaving another woman, Amarjit Kaur, with minor wounds. Dr Muhammad Shakir Libra, Parveen's son, said his mother had suffered injuries to her eyes, head, shoulder, ribs and back. He administered her medical treatment himself, and she is now recovering. "This bull has been roaming free and dangerous for days," said Dr Libra. "It has attacked multiple people, besides damaging vehicles and other property. It feels like death is roaming the streets." Another resident, Sitar Muhammad Libra, echoed the concerns, claiming the same bull had attacked several women — including one of his relatives — and damaged his two-wheeler earlier in the week. "What happens if someone dies? Who is responsible? The govt collects cow cess but does nothing about the menace," he said. Villagers said complaints have been lodged with the local administration, including a call to the SDM's office, but no action has yet been taken. Locals are now demanding immediate intervention to ensure public safety. Ghaziabad interfaith couple under fire again: Man held for wife's ‘abduction' — twice in two months
For the second time in two months, a Ghaziabad man was arrested on Friday for allegedly abducting his 25-year-old wife — despite the woman maintaining that they got married under the Special Marriage Act and she had left her parents' home of her own free will. The police, later in the day, sent the woman to her parents' home. Akbar Khan (29) and Sonika Chauhan (25) maintained they had been married for three years but were reduced to their only identity – their faith. On July 30, Sonika's father, Laxman Singh Chauhan, had filed a complaint at the Indirapuram police station, alleging that she had been kidnapped by her husband, Akbar, and in-laws. Minutes later, a purported video had surfaced in which Sonika claimed that she had left her home on July 30 to be with Akbar. 'I, Sonika, on July 30, around 2 pm, left my house as per my wish… For the last two months, my parents and some other people, including Meena Bhandari, Harish Karakoti, Kapil Tyagi, my maternal uncle Vikram Rawat and my paternal uncle Jagdish Singh Chauhan, had been torturing me physically and mentally… they wanted me to give a statement against Akbar in court and frame him under the POCSO (Act) and put him behind bars. But I protested… I will only tell the truth,' she is heard saying in the video. This was not the first time that Sonika's family had accused Akbar of abducting her. On May 25, too, Laxman had filed a similar complaint at the same police station — accusing Akbar of kidnapping Sonika a day earlier. Back then, Sonika had clarified that she had left home on her own. The Ghaziabad Police had then raided Akbar's home in Indirapuram and 'handed over' Sonika to her parents. Following this, the police had arrested Akbar, his two sisters, sister-in-law, and a neighbour. A group of around 60 men had also attacked Akbar's shop and vandalised it. A purported video had surfaced before Akbar's arrest in May, in which Sonika could be heard saying that she wanted to stay with him and that they had secretly gotten married at a Delhi SDM office under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, in August 2022. Akbar was released on bail on June 8. On Friday, Ghaziabad Commissioner of Police, J Ravinder Goud, said Akbar was arrested in the fresh case of abduction. 'The woman was sent to stay with her family after we took an undertaking from her parents,' he told The Indian Express. Asked why she was sent to stay with her family when she had maintained that she was mentally tortured at their home, Goud said he would check if she wished to stay at a One Stop Centre, set up to support women affected by violence. 'Her safety is our priority, and we will record her statement on Saturday before the magistrate,' he added. Laxman, in his latest complaint, had alleged that Sonika was abducted in the middle of the night by Akbar and his accomplices. He also alleged that Akbar's family had been threatening his family in the days leading up to Sonika's 'abduction on May 24'. Neetika Jha is a Correspondent with The Indian Express. Day after sit-ups in front of lawyers, IAS officer transferred
LUCKNOW/MEERUT The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday transferred IAS officer Rinku Singh Rahi and attached him to the UP Revenue Board in Lucknow, nearly 36 hours after a video purportedly showing him doing sit-ups, holding his ears in front of protesting lawyers in Shahjahanpur, went viral on Tuesday. Rahi, the newly appointed sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of Powayan tehsil in Shahjahanpur, has now been relieved of the post. Rinku Singh Rahi performed sit-ups while holding his ears in front of lawyers on Tuesday. (Sourced) 'The state government took serious note of the sit-ups performed by Rahi in front of lawyers. It's a violation of the All India Services Conduct Rules as well as 'unbecoming of an officer'- an inappropriate act that was not in accordance with the post,' said a senior state government officer. The 2022-batch IAS officer had taken charge as SDM at 11pm on July 28. The following day, during an inspection on the tehsil premises, he spotted a clerk (munshi) of an advocate urinating against a wall. In response, the SDM made the clerk perform sit-ups on the spot, a move that instantly drew attention. Following this incident, Rahi interacted with a group of lawyers staging a protest near the tehsil office. The lawyers expressed their grievances about the appalling condition of toilets on the premises, stating that advocates and clerks were often forced to urinate in the open due to the lack of proper sanitation facilities. Acknowledging their concerns, Rahi reportedly stated that as the senior-most officer of the tehsil, he accepted moral responsibility for the poor hygiene. In a dramatic gesture of accountability, Rahi held his ears and performed five sit-ups in front of the lawyers. While some hailed the act as a bold message of leadership and humility, the gesture went viral on social media and drew mixed reactions. The video triggered a response from higher administrative levels, with the state government seeking a detailed report from the DM on the incident. Following the submission of the report, Rahi was relieved of his duties as SDM and transferred to the Revenue Board in Lucknow. Speaking on the matter, Rinku Singh Rahi confirmed his transfer and clarified his stance. 'Maintaining sanitation is not directly the SDM's responsibility. It was only my first day after joining. I wanted to send a message to the society that when something goes wrong, an officer must show accountability. Transfer is part of the system. I will serve with full commitment wherever the government sends me,' he said.
