Tayla Broad went from the most ‘overdressed person in the room' to ‘effortless chic'
Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, Presenter Tayla Broad.
How would you describe your style? If you'd asked me a couple of years ago, I'd have said that I love experimenting with fashion, and I'm often the most overdressed person in the room. However, since having a child, it's effortless chic. I have a capsule wardrobe of mostly dark-coloured tops and pants suitable for chasing a dirty child around.
What's the oldest thing in your wardrobe? An old winter coat I purchased on a school trip to the snow over a decade ago.
And the most recent addition? A pair of Tony Bianco 'Lush' heels that I'm excited to wear with a mini dress.
What would you wear … on a first date? Black Henne 'Valentina' jeans with a sheer Maj'r off-the-shoulder top, a Lem pleather coat and black, pointed kitten heels. … on the plane? Comfy, oversized wide-leg jeans with a Cotton On singlet, blazer, sneakers and my Oroton travel bag. … on the red carpet? A couture gown by Melbourne designer Oglia-Loro who does a lot of my red-carpet looks. Sam [Oglialoro] also made my wedding gown and reception dress.
What's your favourite fashion era? I like now, especially for the way we're moving away from fast fashion and investing more in long-term pieces.
Who are your favourite designers? Henne for well-made everyday pieces and Venroy for holidays and summer staples. I also love Camilla and Marc, Viktoria & Woods, Effie Kats, Natalie Rolt, and Paul Vasileff.
What's your fragrance of choice? My mum gave me a bottle of Chanel 'Coco Mademoiselle' for my hens party. I wore it for my wedding, and I love it so much, I haven't stopped since.

When should you eat your main meal each day? A dietitian weighs in
This story is part of the August 3 edition of Sunday Life. See all 13 stories. Nicole Car is an opera singer. The 39-year-old shares her day on a plate. 10.30am Today is a show day, so I keep my routine simple. After admin, I make myself some oats with a handful of blueberries, some natural whole-milk yoghurt and a spoonful of peanut butter. 3.30pm I tend to eat the same meal before a show as I had for dinner the night before. Lunch today is homemade bolognese with wholemeal pasta and a little parmesan cheese. It's a very late lunch, giving me enough energy to perform without being too full. 5pm I make the 45-minute walk to the theatre – I'm in San Francisco, playing Mimi in La Boheme – while listening to my next project, Rusalka, for Opera Australia. 10.30pm I always bring an apple with me to the show in case I get hungry during the performance. Tonight, I eat it as I am leaving the theatre. 11pm A late-night snack of avocado, salad and hummus. And then it's time for rest. Dr Joanna McMillan says Top marks for… Your wholefood staples – oats at breakfast and wholemeal pasta – which are easy on the gut yet deliver fibre and sustained energy. Having your main meal at lunchtime is smart and your apple delivers a quick carb and antioxidant boost. Your walk is ideal for vitamin D production.

‘Like tracksuit pants': The jeans Bella Heathcote can't live without
This story is part of the August 3 edition of Sunday Life. See all 13 stories. Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, actor Bella Heathcote. How would you describe your style? It's somewhere between five-year-old girl, teenage boy and occasionally their mother who's chic and dressed appropriately. What's the oldest thing in your wardrobe? I was only 12 when Mum died, and I inherited some of her clothing: incredible suits and designer pieces that at the time I could never imagine wearing. I recently wore a gold Roberto Cavalli dress [of hers] to my friend Phoebe Tonkin's wedding in New York City. I feel protected when I wear something of my mum's; it's a good luck talisman. And the most recent addition? A Moschino x Candy Crush backpack from 2017 that I bought on The RealReal. It's tacky and fantastic. What would you wear … on a first date? What I wear on any given day: a button-down shirt and jeans with a loafer. … on a plane? A white tee, vintage men's Levi's jeans, an oversized denim jacket, a silk scarf and sneakers. … on the red carpet? The gold Saint Laurent dress I wore to the Fifty Shades Darker premiere in 2017 was incredible. Loading What's your favourite fashion era? The 1970s, '80s and '90s all have something: high-waisted jeans, big shoulder pads, a good blazer. Who's your favourite designer? If I love something, I love it whether it's Saint Laurent or from a random op shop. Having said that, I do love what Alessandro Michele did at Gucci. Lee Mathews does a great shirt, and if I want to look good for an event, Zimmermann will have something for me. What's your fragrance of choice? 'Air' perfume oil by Bodha. I also love their incense.
