A recent wave of powerful earthquakes, such as the magnitude 7.7 that killed over 5,000 people in Myanmar's Sagaing in March this year, and recent 8.8 magnitude quake that struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, triggering tsunami alerts across as many as 44 countries in the Pacific Ocean region, has raised fears of a major cataclysm earthquake-prone countries. But have you wondered whether India and Pakistan are listed among most earthquake-prone countries in the world?
Based on seismic records and data from NOAA, here is a list of top 10 countries which have been frequently affected by major earthquakes in the last three decades:
China: India's neighbor China tops the list, having suffered at total of 186 powerful earthquakes since 1990. China's western and southwestern regions, especially along the Longmenshan and Himalayan fault lines, are categorized as highly-active seismic zones. Recent quakes which caused massive loss of life and damage in the South Asian country include the 2008 Sichuan earthquake and the 1976 Tangshan earthquake Indonesia: Regarded as the most seismically-active country on the planet, Indonesia lies in one of the most earthquake-prone zones in the Pacific Ocean, and has witnessed about 1000 tremors, including 166 major earthquakes since 1990. Notably, one of the deadliest natural disaster in modern history, the 2004 Sumatra earthquake and tsunami, occurred in Indonesia, killing more than 200,000 people in the region and leaving millions homeless. Iran: The Islamic Republic is located in the middle of the collision zone between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it highly vulnerable to major earthquakes due to tectonic activity in the region. Japan: Perhaps no other country has witnessed the level of devastation due to earthquakes more than Japan, primarily because of it being located in the Ring of Fire– one of the most seismically active zones on earth. Japan has witnessed a total of 98 major earthquakes since 1990, including 2011 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, that claimed the lives of at least 20,000 people. United States: The United States has a large landmass and experienced a total of 78 powerful earthquakes from 1990 to 2024. Powerful seismic activity is mostly seen in California and Alaska, especially along the San Andreas Fault. Turkey: Located along the North Anatolian Fault, a major east-west fault line that has caused several deadly earthquakes, Turkey has recorded some of the devastating quakes in history, including the 1999 Izmit earthquake killed at least 18,373 people and injured 48,901 and the 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquake that left more than 50,000 dead. India: India witnesses significant seismic activity in the Northeast and Himalayan region and the tectonic collision with the Eurasian plate, resulting in destructive earthquakes such as the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, which claimed over 20,000 lives. Philippines: The tectonic interaction between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate results in heightened seismic activity and earthquakes in Philippines. The country has recorded 55 major earthquakes since 1990, including the magnitude 7.7 Luzon island quake that killed 2,412 people in 1990. Mexico: This North American nation is located within the boundary of shifting tectonic plates, resulting in frequent earthquakes in the region. Afghanistan: Due its location the seismically active Hindu Kush region, Afghanistan often witnesses powerful earthquakes because of the tectonic activity caused by the collision of Indian and Eurasian plates.

On a grey, rain-heavy Tuesday in Dharali, the stream surged back through low-lying ground where homes, shops and a riverside bazaar had gradually been built over time. Much of what stood there is now gone. Geologists studying the aftermath of the Uttarkashi flash flood say the destruction in Dharali was not random, not unpredictable, not even extraordinary in the broader logic of Himalayan rivers. It was, in fact, inevitable. Even from distance, destruction appears almost diagrammatic The bazaar and the buildings that once stood as the village's spine had been constructed, quite plainly, on the river's ancient bed — on soft alluvial ground laid down by the Kheer Gad itself over centuries. What occurred was not a deviation, but a return. Prof MPS Bisht, head of the geology department at HNB Garhwal University in Srinagar, called it a lesson in basic river dynamics. 'When a river flows around a bend,' he said, 'it typically takes on a convex and concave shape. The water strikes harder on the convex side—this is where scouring and erosion take place. On the concave side, the flow slows, and sediments collect.' This rule, he said, revealed itself with 'devastating clarity' during the flood. The stream, thick with debris and charged with monsoon force, surged against the outer bank where the bazaar had grown. Buildings there were flattened in moments. But the homes on the gentler, inner bank—where silt had built up over time—escaped. To imagine Dharali now is to rely not on witness accounts—none have come from outside since the flood—but on satellite images, drone footage, and the testimony of geologists who have studied the terrain before. Yet, even from a distance, the shape of the destruction appears deliberate, almost diagrammatic. One side of the village lies gouged clean, the other remarkably intact, as if the flood followed an invisible instruction. In 2013, senior geologist Piyoosh Rautela said, the same stream buried the national highway beneath a surge of debris. 'We have forgotten the river's right of way,' Rautela said. 'Himalayan rivers are not gentle flows you can negotiate with. They are geomorphic agents. They carved these valleys. Their floodplains are not real estate. They are part of the river.'

London, Aug 6 (PTI) Britain's Imperial War Museums (IWM) has launched a major collections project entitled 'India's War', inviting members of the public to share stories and memorabilia relating to Indian experiences of serving in and living through the World War II. By the end of the war in August 1945, the Armed Forces from the Indian subcontinent were the second largest fighting force drawn from Commonwealth nations, after Britain. According to IWM, 89,000 South Asian military personnel gave their lives fighting on almost every battle front Britain was engaged in, with 28 Indian armed forces personnel awarded the Victoria Cross – the highest award for gallantry in action. 'While IWM has significant film and photography collections documenting the Indian contribution to the Second World War, these are often unable to fully convey the experiences of the war at an individual level," said Adrian Kerrison, Senior Curator Second World War and Mid-20th Century at the IWM. 'This collecting project is an opportunity for IWM to reach out to our audiences to ensure that these powerful personal stories – significant for our understanding of the consequences of the Second World War in India and the UK – are properly represented within IWM's collections," he said. The curator said India's War, which went live recently, is aimed at building IWM's collections and strengthening relationships with South Asian communities through the conversations that it will generate. One lesser-known story already in IWM's collection is that of Pilot Officer Sayanapuram Duraiswamy Thyagarajan, known to his fellow fighter pilots as 'Tiger' Rajan. Born on India's eastern coast in 1918, Tiger volunteered for the Royal Air Force (RAF) and was posted to 263 Squadron as a fighter pilot. He was killed in action at the age of 26 while attacking German ground targets in the Falaise Pocket engagement during the Battle of Normandy in 1944. His headstone, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), is written in Hindi, English and French, and reads: 'This Hindu Airman is Honoured Here". 'The 'India's War' collecting project seeks to gather more personal stories of service members like Tiger Rajan while also uncovering new civilian perspectives. The aim is to add more under-represented voices to IWM's collections, documenting South Asian experiences on both the fighting and home fronts," IWM said. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and 'India's War' collecting project is aimed at highlighting the immense contribution made by members of the Armed Forces from pre-Partition India during colonial rule. The aim is to showcase how the events impacted people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka by broadening the scope of IWM's collections, as well as inform and shape future programming.
