City's civic infra fails first rain test
2
Lucknow: Revealing serious lapses in civic infrastructure maintenance, the service lane of Ring Road near Indiranagar Sector 18 collapsed after the season's first rainfall, forming a 15-foot-wide crater.
The public works department has barricaded the area. As a temporary measure, the crater has been filled with debris and rubbish to prevent any untoward incident. Repair work has begun, but the blame game among govt agencies has already started.
PWD sources alleged that Lesa had recently laid underground cables without proper coordination, which might have weakened the surface. Meanwhile, confusion prevailed over jurisdiction.
Zone-7 zonal officer Akash Kumar said the area falls under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). He added that sewer and drain maintenance is the responsibility of LMC.
Residents reported that while the sludge from drains was removed during pre-monsoon cleaning, it was left on the roadside and washed back into the drains with the rain, defeating the purpose. Waterlogging was also reported near the Daliganj Crossing underpass, where a small crater developed following the downpour.

Waterlogged roads paralyse Gurgaon: Residents slam poor drainage amid heavy rain
GURGAON: The residents of Gurgaon woke up to continuous light rain on Saturday, which began around 5 am and has been lashing the district non-stop since then. Though the rain is not heavy, it has persisted steadily, causing widespread waterlogging and disrupting normal life across the city. The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh had issued a yellow alert for Gurgaon earlier, warning of thunderstorms, moderate rainfall, and lightning through the morning. Residents expressed mixed feelings about the weather. 'It is good to finally get some relief from the heat, but the waterlogging on Sector 9, 10 and 15 is making commuting a nightmare,' said Anil Kumar, a local resident. Water has collected in low-lying areas near my home, and it's difficult to step outside.' Children were seen splashing in floodwaters in some localities, alleviating the tensions momentarily. 'It started raining in our area at 7am. No downpour. No cloudburst. No heavy showers. Just gentle drizzle. Even then specific roads in our sector, especially the 18m main sector road, are flooded as usual. Contrary to what national Urban Development Minister and former CM of Haryana, Manohar lal Khattar has to say that too much rain is the reason for flooding and not drains,' said Bhawani Shankar Tripathy, general secretary, RWA of Sector 23A. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One Click Can Change Everything..!! 'We advise residents not to venture into such zones unless absolutely necessary, as waterlogging can be deceptive and hazardous,' said a city official. Emergency teams are reportedly on standby to respond to any reports of flooding or accidents. This steady rain has lowered the minimum temperature to around 25°C, nearly 2.5 degrees below the recent average, offering a cool respite. However, the persistent showers have exposed the city's longstanding drainage issues. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that intermittent rain and thunderstorms may continue over the next few days, urging residents to stay updated on weather advisories and remain cautious during this period. Rain skips city, 3-day bounty for interiors
Chennai: While north interior districts Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupathur, and Tiruvannamalai have seen rain for three straight days, showers have mostly skipped the city and the suburbs. Instead, high humidity has made conditions hot and uncomfortable. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in the city on Saturday but said rain intensity may drop thereafter. On Thursday, the IMD predicted moderate rain for Friday but downgraded the forecast to light to moderate on the day itself. Meteorologists said storms forming over interior districts have been dissipating before reaching the coast. Rainfall in the city also depends on the strength of winds steering clouds towards the city.
