Connor Misch began college career at Xavier and intends to finish there. The Lake Central alum has hit it big.
The 2022 Lake Central graduate arrived at Xavier three years ago with the expectation that he wasn't going anywhere else.
'With the landscape of how everything is going in college baseball, it's hard to find a guy who's been at the same program for their entire career,' he said. 'I came in here on day one, ready to buy in to what was in front of me, which was an awesome coaching staff and a great locker room — and that's led me to stay in the program for so long.'
During his time at Xavier, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Misch has steadily developed into one of the top hitters in the Big East. Also a standout pitcher in high school, he was named to the all-conference first team this season after starting all 59 games at first base for the Musketeers (32-27) and hitting .332 with a team-high 65 hits and a team-high 50 RBIs.
Misch was at his best during Big East games, hitting a conference-leading .448.
Xavier assistant Riley Bertram said Misch's success this season is the result of his commitment to improving since he arrived on campus.
'He's earned everything he's done here,' Bertram said. 'He's one of those players that you cheer for because you know that they've been putting in the work behind the scenes, and you want them to have that success.'
Misch struggled during one stretch in March, when his batting average dipped to .233 after he went hitless in seven of eight games. But conversations with second baseman Nolan Tucker, a 2019 Hanover Central graduate who was an All-Big East second-team selection after leading Xavier with a .339 batting average, helped Misch shake off that slump.
'He was playing every day, but he wasn't playing his best baseball,' Tucker said. 'We were joking around about it, but I told him that he had to stop looking at his stats because it was the worst thing for him.'
Misch's batting average soared past .300 over the next month.
'Baseball is so mental, and when you're struggling — or even if you're playing well — having the weight of your batting average constantly on your mind makes the game that much harder,' Tucker said. 'Letting that go helped him have that good year.'
Misch improved in just about every statistical area compared to his sophomore season, when he was named to the All-Big East second team after hitting .268 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs. At the time, he was encouraged by those numbers, given that it was his first season as an everyday player.
'That was a successful season,' Misch said. 'But I knew that I needed to do more. I needed to get on base more, I needed to hit for average more and I needed to drive in more runs. So I really focused on developing as a whole hitter and specifically just getting on base.'
Misch proceeded to draw 44 walks this season, doubling his 2024 total, and his on-base percentage jumped from .382 to .485.
Looking ahead to his senior year, Misch hopes to increase his home run total. He hit four this season.
'I checked a lot of boxes this year, but not that one,' he said. 'I'm trying to find the appropriate launch angle for my swing so that I can lift the ball on my pull side and hit more home runs. But it's about finding that fair trade between your home runs and your strikeouts and your batting average.'
So plenty of work awaits, but Misch said he's enjoying every second he spends in the sport.
'I tell everyone that it's the best job in the world,' he said. 'It's so awesome, what we get to do. I've been able to take a look back, and I'm really proud of where I am. It's all a credit to my parents and to all of the coaches who've helped me along the way.'

Will Caitlin Clark play tomorrow? Indiana Fever update injury status
Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark continues to battle the injury bug in 2025. A right groin injury has sidelined Clark for each of the Fever's past two contests and for the 3-Point Contest and WNBA All-Star Game. In its latest injury update, the Fever revealed that Clark has been officially ruled out of Thursday night's contest against the Las Vegas Aces. Clark's absence against the Aces will mark her 12th regular season game that she's missed due to injury in 2025. Including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final against Minnesota, it's now 13 games that Clark has been sidelined with injury. Earlier this season, Clark had separate lengthy absences as she worked to recover from left quadriceps and left groin injuries. The 6-foot Fever guard missed five games from May 28-June 10 with a left quadriceps injury. Clark missed five more games with a left groin injury from June 26-July 5. The second-year pro's right groin injury sidelined her for the final game before the WNBA All-Star break and now for each of the first two contests after the break. Fever head coach Stephanie White said on Tuesday that there's no timeline for Clark to return. White also revealed that Clark met with another doctor on Tuesday morning. "Yeah, I mean, certainly unfortunate and I feel like there's been quite a few injuries over the course of the beginning of the season for quite a few people... "I mean, I'm not going to say I've just been getting around-the-clock treatment. I've been still trying to enjoy this weekend, having a balance of that at the same time, and soaking all of this in. Once tomorrow comes around, we'll completely shift my focus to getting as healthy as possible. Just prioritizing that (recovery), but also having a good time has been important for myself too," Clark said on Saturday before the WNBA All-Star Game as she updated her injury recovery. Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 36.7% field goal shooting and 27.9% 3-point accuracy. USA TODAY Sports has Brent Venables on the hot seat entering 2025
Since 1998, the Oklahoma Sooners have finished below .500 only twice. Unfortunately for current coach Brent Venables, both times it's happened under his watch. Though many are expecting a bounce-back season for the Sooners, the SEC media isn't quite ready to crown them, picking Oklahoma to finish 10th in the SEC preseason media poll. The Sooners are coming off a 6-7 season with a 2-6 record after their first year in the Southeastern Conference. That disappointment, combined with the 6-7 season in 2022, when Oklahoma was still in the Big 12, has put Venables' job in jeopardy. USA TODAY Sports writers Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams ranked the five coaches with the hottest seats in the SEC, and Venables came in third in Toppmeyer's top five and No. 4 according to Adams. Rival Texas experienced little trouble transitioning to the SEC. That adds up to a pivotal Year 4 for Venables, who soon will be working for a new athletic director. Joe Castiglione, who hired Venables, is retiring. - Toppmeyer and Adams, USA TODAY Sports Though a 10th-place finish would be an improvement - the Sooners finished in a tie for 14th last year - it would make Venables' job prospects tenuous, most likely. To help alleviate some of that pressure, Venables hired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle from Washington State. Along with Arbuckle came quarterback John Mateer. Mateer is considered one of the top transfers in the country after leading FBS in total touchdowns last year, running for 15 and throwing for 29. Running back Jaydn Ott also joins the offense from California-Berkeley, and after being named all Pac-12 two seasons ago, was ranked preseason second-team All-SEC last week. Oklahoma went all in to turn over the offensive group that finished 97th in the nation in points per game in 2024. If they can get an improved performance from the offense to go along with Venables' defense, the Sooners should be in good shape in 2025. The only coaches in the conference with hotter seats are Arkansas' Sam Pittman and Auburn's Hugh Freeze, according to the list. Lindor and Alonso snap out of slumps, power Mets to series sweep of Angels
NEW YORK (AP) — Slump-busting hits by Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso were just what the New York Mets needed to finish a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels. Lindor snapped a career-worst 0-for-31 drought and Alonso ended a 2-for-34 slide as the Mets beat the Angels 6-3 on Wednesday. New York won its fourth straight after losing its first two games coming out of the All-Star break. Lindor gave the Mets the lead for good with a 76.6 mph RBI single in the third inning. The shortstop had made three outs on balls hit harder than 97 mph since Sunday, including a 98.2 mph fly to center in his first at-bat Wednesday. 'Funny how baseball works,' Lindor said. 'When you're good, you're good. When you suck, you suck.' Two batters after Lindor's looper, Alonso, whose slump dated to July 10, hit a 439-foot three-run homer — his 22nd longball of the season — to left field that was clocked at 112 mph off the bat. 'Felt awesome,' Alonso said. 'Those are kind of few and far between. Balls like that you kind of dream about — well, for me at least.' As relieved as they were to fuel the four-run third, Lindor and Alonso found further encouragement in the hits they collected later in the game. Lindor, whose batting average has slipped from .289 to .248 since June 7, produced the Mets' final run with another RBI single in the fourth. 'Past couple of games, felt like my at-bats got better,' Lindor said. 'I made the pitcher work a little bit more and there were more productive outs. And that, plus the combination of winning, is a good recipe.' Alonso singled to right in the seventh for his third multihit game of the month. 'Honestly, I'm more satisfied with that inside-out single my last at-bat,' Alonso said. 'The homer obviously is super great. But personally, when I'm hitting the ball to the big part of the field, that's when I feel good.' The Mets are 5-0 this season when Alonso and Lindor have multiple hits in a game and 13-0 in such games dating to last July. 'We're going to need those guys,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'We know that they're going through it, but they're too good, man. They're too good of a hitter and too good of a player and I'm glad they were able to come through for us today.'
