Keonjhar: Four persons were killed in separate elephant attacks across three police station areas in Keonjhar district on Friday, sparking tensions between locals and forest officials.
In the first incident, two residents of Kendudihi Munda Basti, Santosh Munda (45) and Reena Munda (40), were attacked by a wild elephant while collecting sal leaves for the Raja festival. The attack took place in the border areas between Keonjhar and Banei forest divisions. Reena died on the spot, while Santosh succumbed to his injuries at Barbil community health centre.
The incident triggered violent protests as hundreds of villagers confronted forest officials who arrived with ambulances.
The mob, alleging delayed response and inadequate protection from wild animals, attacked the officials, tore their uniforms, and held them captive for three hours before police intervention.
Forest range officer of Barbil Sanjib Kumar Rout has filed a complaint at Rugudi police station regarding the assault. "Action will be taken as per the laws and the accused will be arrested," said Rabishankar Bhaisa, IIC, Rugudi police station.

In a separate incident, a 69-year-old man was killed by an elephant near Budhakhman village in Sadar range while attempting to chase a herd away. An elephant grabbed him with its trunk and crushed him to death. The fourth casualty, Chumuru Munda (57) from Silijoda (Kalimati), was killed in Champua forest range when an elephant, protecting its calf, attacked him near his house.
Assistant conservator of forest (ACF) , Keonjhar, Ashok Das said, "Preliminary compensation of Rs 60,000 each was immediately paid as per govt rule.
Rest will be paid after all formalities are fulfilled." Govt has recently revised compensation for kin of deceased killed in conflict with wild animals to Rs 10 lakh from the earlier Rs 6 lakh.
The rising human-elephant conflict has become a major concern for the forest department, which has been struggling to manage the situation despite significant expenditure. While the department continues to issue warnings, locals claim insufficient protective measures and delayed compensation for wildlife-related damages.
