Options now range from reselling at a far higher price to converting the house into a religious museum—a move that could attract global pilgrims and potentially inject tourism revenue into Dolton's battered economy.Once riddled with crime and even occupied by drug dealers between 2017 and 2018, the house now represents a symbol of spiritual renewal and civic pride. India is unlikely to allow American imports of genetically modified (GM) corn and soybeans, under the trade agreement that India and the United States (US) are currently negotiating, a source aware of the matter indicated. 'Some things are a matter of principle,' the source said, citing the government's position on the matter. Under the trade deal negotiations, market access for agricultural products has been one of the key demands from the US. It has also been one of the most contentious issue between both countries. Even in the past, the US Trade Representative (USTR) had pointed out several countries', including India's rules on GM products as non-tariff barriers. Last month, affiliates of the Sangh Parivar have said that the India-US trade agreement is unlikely to happen if America continues to be 'stubborn' about securing market access for genetically modified (GM) crops, Business Standard had reported. In the past, The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) and Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) had flagged the issue that concessions to the United States (US) in the agriculture sector, including dairy products, will have ramifications for the country's food security. Government officials had earlier said that the sixth round of negotiations with the US will take place in the second half of August — limiting the possibility of an interim trade deal over the next few days —before August 1. US President Donald Trump has set August 1 as a deadline for double-digit reciprocal tariffs to kick in. India could face up to 26 per cent reciprocal tariff from August 1 if no agreement for an interim is reached by then.

The Trump administration's decision is being seen as a major setback for China, which is looking to expand its Belt Road Initiative (BRI) to Nepal. The MCC is a package of development projects in Nepal, which the US launched to counter China's BRI. However, after Donald Trump became president, the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) decided to shut down the MCC as part of a cut in foreign funding. Why did the US decide to continue MCC? After directing US aid agencies to wind up their work, the State Department began reviewing foreign aid projects and programmes of various agencies, including MCC and USAID. The Kathmandu Post reported in its post that the US government's foreign aid review recommended the continuation of the Millennium Challenge Corporation Nepal Compact. A representative of the US Embassy told the Kathmandu Post that the Nepal government has been informed about this decision. What did Nepal say on US' decision on MCC? Since January, Nepal was confused about how the government would manage the funds if the Trump administration completely withdrew from MCC. The Kathmandu Post quoted a senior Finance Ministry official as saying that this new decision of the USA has brought relief. Although the US side had assured us that the projects would not be affected, we were still looking for alternative resources for projects under MCC. How much money has gone to MCC? Nepal and MCC signed an agreement in September 2017 for energy and road projects, under which the US would provide assistance of $500 million. Nepal would give $150 million from its side, which was increased to $197 million. In this way, the total investment in the project under MCC has reached $697 million. MCC had decided to put in $50 million to cover the funding shortfall, which could take the amount to over $740 million. How is MCC America's answer to China's BRI? MCC is considered to be the answer to China's Belt and Road Initiative. Nepal is also a part of China's BRI project. In June this year, the MCC headquarters said that it is effectively countering the BRI. In a resolution presented in the US Congress, MCC said, 'for more than two decades, MCC has invested in partner countries to create new opportunities for American investment, trade and employment, opening up valuable opportunities for American businesses. It has also effectively countered the growing influence of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)'.

Jabil investing ₹2,000 crore in manufacturing in India: Ashwini Vaishnaw
NEW DELHI: US-based Jabil 's plant in Sanand, Gujarat, is nearing completion, said Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday. 'Jabil is investing more than ₹2,000 crore in manufacturing silicon photonics and electronic manufacturing services in India,' Vaishnaw said in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. 'Plant at Sanand is almost completed,' the minister added. Silicon photonics, which integrates light for high-speed communications in microelectronics, is set to cater to a wide array of sectors, including quantum computing, quantum communication, fifth-generation (5G) and 6G technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), radar, and avionics. The American vendor had last year said that it is continuing to invest in silicon photonics-based products and capabilities, beyond 800G and 1.6T, to support the increasing demands of hyperscalers and next-wave cloud and AI data center growth. Jabil serves 300 of the biggest companies globally across sectors, including smartphones, cloud equipment, healthcare, to automotive and home appliances. It employs more than 1.4 lakh employees across 100 locations in over 25 countries. Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson , via Jabil, manufactures 4G and 5G radios, RAN Compute as well as microwave equipment. Jabil is also a supplier to iPhone-maker Apple in India. Jabil Circuit , according to a recent PTI news agency report, has also emerged as the biggest beneficiary of the telecom production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. It received ₹235.87 crore as an incentive in the two fiscal years FY23 and FY24. The Central government has disbursed ₹1,162 crore under the telecom PLI till March 31. This scheme, launched on April 1, 2021, aims to boost domestic manufacturing and self-reliance in the telecom sector. It will conclude by the end of the current fiscal year (FY26). Out of 42 companies shortlisted under the scheme, 21 manufacturers have successfully received the incentives so far. The government had earmarked ₹4,115 crore for the scheme to generate an estimated ₹2.45 lakh crore in additional sales and create over 44,000 new jobs during the tenure.
