More than 5,000,000 UK victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault or stalking
One in eight women and one in 12 men have reported being victims of these types of crimes despite the government promising a clamp down.
This is a total of 5.1 million people aged 16 and over in England and Wales, the Office for National Statistics said.
Heidi Riedel, CEO of Woman's Trust, told Metro: 'The overwhelming number of abuse survivors are female.
'Survivors deserve better – and the government must do better if it's serious about addressing not only the incidents of VAWG but also the impact.
'What the numbers won't include is people who either don't yet recognise that what they are experiencing is domestic abuse, for example people in coercively controlling relationships or where their partner might be restricting access to finances, for example.'

Around 100 women are killed by men each year – often ones closest to them.
Ministers have promised to halve levels in a decade in its strategy to end violence against women and girls.
The latest figures are slightly lower than last year's estimate of 5.4 million people.
But the ONS said these estimates are still in development and are subject to change, and caution should be taken when making comparisons.
Gemma Sherrington, CEO of Refuge, told Metro: 'We are in an epidemic of violence against women and girls (VAWG), so sadly, the latest ONS estimates around the prevalence of domestic abuse come as no surprise.
'We welcome improvements to data collection, but these figures are likely to represent the tip of the iceberg as VAWG remains severely under-reported.
'The Government must take urgent action if it is to achieve its pledge to halve VAWG within the next decade.' More Trending
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said it is the first time combining reports of domestic abuse, sexual assault and stalking.
She said: 'As part of our mission to tackle the national emergency of Violence Against Women and Girls, we have made sure that for the first time the figures are being recorded in a combined way, showing that one in eight women were victims of domestic abuse, stalking or sexual assault last year.
'That is why we have already started to put domestic abuse specialists in 999 control rooms, invested in major new perpetrator programmes, and why we are publishing a transformative cross-government VAWG strategy in September, because everybody has a right to feel safe on our streets.'
The figures have been published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) using data collected as part of the Crime Survey for England and Wales.

Mum-of-three hit neighbour over the head with a spade after campaign of abuse
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The family of a man who was smashed over the head with a spade by the woman next door say they are living in fear the 'absolute nutjob will come back and finish what she started'. Catherine 'Cat' Lloyd, 44, launched the astonishing attack after what police called a 'long-running dispute' between the neighbours in Peterborough in May 2023. CCTV footage shows the mum-of-three approaching the victim, a man in his 20s, in the passageway that divides their houses with the garden tool raised above her head before whacking him with it. The man's grandparents-in-law, who live beside Lloyd, said they got on fine when she first moved in six years ago but descried how 'the abuse started' after they exchanged letters over some work debris that fell into her garden. 'From there on, we were called paedophiles, we were called murderers, you name it,' the pensioners told the Daily Mail. 'We had to get cameras put in. She was shouting it over the fence. For nearly two years I didn't dare go out our back gate because she'd be there all the time waiting for me. 'We had the police out so many times and we told them she's like a ticking time bomb. You just don't know when she's going to kick off.' They said Lloyd started 'hating' the victim after he stood up for them and 'gave her as much back'. Weeks before the attack, CCTV picked Lloyd up threatening: 'Do you have a preference? I've got a spade, I've got garden shears, or I've got a rake.' While police only released footage of the spade attack, the Mail reports that Lloyd then rang her ex Aaron Hockey who turned up armed with a wooden bat which he hit him with. Hockey was given a suspended sentence after he admitted ABH and having an offensive weapon over the incident. The elderly couple, who cannot be named, have had an iron gate fitted to secure the passageway, said: 'We are having to safeguard ourselves from the possibility of an absolute nutjob coming back to finish the job that she intended.' Despite the judge imposing a restraining order on Lloyd, they say 'there's physically nothing to stop her' returning because she is back on the streets and still has keys to the house next door. Lloyd was given a 10-month prison sentence after admitting GBH but was released due to time already served on remand. Her neighbour on the other side told the Mail she 'feels sorry' for Lloyd, saying she 'was always very friendly and helpful'. More Trending 'She needs help,' they added. DC Lloyd Davis said: 'Catherine Lloyd's behaviour in this case was completely unacceptable. 'Irrespective of any ongoing dispute, violence like this is not the answer. I was ordered out of a pool just for being a nanny - my whole body was shaking
The uncomfortable looks came first. As Jane Tiozen, a domestic worker from the Philippines, dipped her feet in the swimming pool of an upscale beach club in Lebanon, she could feel the disapproving eyes of guests on her. That is when the lifeguard ordered the 33-year-old to exit the pool as 'the help is not allowed to swim in it.' Jane, who has worked as a nanny for a family in Beirut for eight years, told Metro: 'I could sense something was off. 'Then the lifeguard approached me and told me to get out of the pool. 'You are not allowed to swim,' he said. 'I was shocked. Everyone was staring at me. My whole body was shaking and I could feel that I was starting to cry.' Incidents of racial and class-based segregation, like this one, are a window into Lebanon's kafala system, considered a form of modern-day slavery by some human rights organisations. Under this legal framework – also operating in Jordan and many Gulf states – migrant domestic workers are bound to their employers and denied basic labour rights. Employers are even permitted to take away their passports. As a result, in many beach resorts across Lebanon, unwritten rules dictate that those considered 'the help' are not allowed in pools. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Aware of the physical and sexual abuse that some of her colleagues face, Jane admitted she is 'one of the lucky ones' to find a 'good' family. The single mother explained that the incident on June 13 is the first time she has experienced such direct discrimination, but claimed there is a lot of racism in Lebanon and it has become socially acceptable. Her employer, Maya Nassar, a radio host on Virgin Radio Lebanon and 'Ms Fitness Universe 2025', was appalled at how staff treated Jane and caused a scandal, as she put it. Having grown up in the country, she is aware of this 'unwritten rule,' but it was the first time she witnessed it. The mother-of-four told Metro: 'There are beach clubs that have rules that people of colour cannot swim in the pools, essentially targeting those who come to Lebanon mostly to work in a house as a helper or as a nanny. 'These are typically low-paid jobs. There is this horrible mentality that they are not clean, that they have diseases, they are not classy. People want to keep beach clubs 'high-end' and having these workers swim is seen as 'low class'. 'I have no idea why these rules still exist. Jane is part of the family and we were extremely angry and upset for her. My children were very confused as they did not understand why she is not allowed in the pool with us.' Recalling the incident, Maya said that the lifeguard tried to make excuses, saying that he was 'just doing my job and my job is not to allow maids and helpers to swim'. She added: 'What really annoyed me is that he stereotyped Jane. Because she is Asian, he decided that she is the nanny. 'She could have been anyone. She could have been an ambassador. But he profiled her.' Neither Jane nor Maya want to name the beach club where the incident happened. Instead, Maya wishes to pressure the industry as a whole into overturning their internal 'racist' policies and in general, help change public perception that domestic workers from South East Asia and Africa 'spread disease or that they are inferior to us.' She posted a video on Instagram, where she boasts more than 300,000 followers, in which she and Jane detail what happened at the beach club. Since releasing it, Maya has been approached by hundreds of people who claim that their employees were also discriminated against at resorts in Lebanon. Others have not been so kind to her campaign. Maya shared screengrabs of her WhatsApp chat with mothers at her children's school. One of them read: 'The beach resorts are not discriminating – they are just responding to the high demand from their regular visitors and owners. 'Implementing rules based on this demand is a business decision, not a form of discrimination. Calling for a boycott would likely cause more harm than good, and it is not a solution we should support.' A recent discussion in the r/Lebanese group on Reddit also proved that Jane's experience is not unique. User John Aiden complained that his children's nanny, who is Filipino, is not allowed to enter most pools in Lebanon. He wrote: 'It seems to offend people for some reason. The same goes for beaches (supposed to be public!) and on top of that, they are asking her to wear a bikini, which she does not feel comfortable with [because of her religion].'. Under Lebanese law, denying people access to swimming pools – public or private – based on skin colour or socio-economic status is considered to be discriminatory and potentially illegal, but enforcement varies greatly. Maya compared it to the 2011 public smoking ban – a major cultural shock in the country. She said: 'The law is not enforced. It is like smoking. Smoking is illegal in public spaces and restaurants. But it is not applied. 'People smoke anywhere and everywhere. So, it is the same with the beach clubs. 'Many people feel that they are high class, they are sophisticated. It is a very sick and wrong thing that is happening in our country and I really wish that this would stop.' More Trending In 2006, filmmaker Carol Mansour produced a documentary called 'Maid in Lebanon' depicting the gamble these women take when they go to work in the country. Almost 20 years later, not much seems to have changed for the 200,000 migrant domestic workers, and racism is only one of the issues they face. Human Rights Watch and Lebanese organisations have documented for years how the kafala system gives employers huge control over workers' lives, leading to an array of abuses, including forced confinement, and verbal, physical, and sexual abuse. Aya Majzoub, former Lebanon researcher at HRW, said about the system in 2020: 'Lebanon's restrictive and exploitative kafala system traps tens of thousands of migrant domestic workers in potentially harmful situations by tying their legal status to their employer, enabling highly abusive conditions amounting at worst to modern-day slavery.' Diddy branded 'delusional' over plans to launch music comeback with stadium show
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Sean 'Diddy' Combs is reportedly setting his sights on a return to the stage – and not just any stage. The embattled music mogul is aiming for Madison Square Garden once he puts his legal battle behind him, according to his lead attorney Marc Agnifilo. The 55-year-old musician had been charged with sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution after he was arrested last September – but denies all of the allegations and pleaded not guilty. At the start of July, Combs was convicted of transporting Ventura and another former girlfriend, only known as Jane, for prostitution. He was found not guilty of racketeering and of sex trafficking in the case of both women. In an interview with CBS Mornings set to air Thursday, Agnifilo revealed that Combs, 55, has expressed a clear goal during his time behind bars: to headline a comeback show at the legendary New York City venue. [He's going to be back at Madison Square Garden – and I said I'll be there,' Agnifilo told CBS's Jericka Duncan. Duncan asked the attorney, 'So he's talked to you about getting back into music?' to which Agnifilo replied, 'No – honestly, he has not – OK, one thing he said, he said' was that he's 'going to be back in Madison Square Garden.' Asked what he would do in the performance, Agnifilo replied, 'I guess being on stage, you know?' People on social media were quick to react incredulously, with X user @Marge1902 writing: 'No. There can't be any people who would want to see him.' @CoalitionHoops posted: 'This man can't be serious!' @erikaxtc called him delusional, writing: 'The delusion is REAL!' catsmamma5 wrote: 'This man thinks nothing matters and this are justified and back to normal for everything 🙄 . HIS ARROGANCE IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL The lawyer described Combs as someone who 'always strives to do something exceptional and probably demanding and challenging.' According to the lawyer, Combs is also motivated by a longing to reconnect with his family. 'I think he wants to get out of jail, reestablish a loving, present relationship with all of his seven children,' Agnifilo said. 'Get back with his mother, and the people who love him and miss him.' The news comes as Combs' legal team continues discussions with members of Donald Trump's administration about the possibility of a presidential pardon. A source close to the administration has told Deadline that Trump, 79, is 'seriously considering' giving Combs a Presidential pardon. Speaking with Newsmax on Friday, Trump gave a characteristically vague assessment of Combs' legal predicament. 'Well, he was essentially, sort of, half-innocent,' Trump said. 'I don't know what they do that he's still in jail or something. He was celebrating a victory but I guess it wasn't as good a victory.' Another member of the defense, attorney Nicole Westmoreland, told CNN earlier this week that conversations regarding a pardon have taken place. 'It's my understanding that we've reached out and had conversations in reference to a pardon,' she said. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video This comes just a couple of months after the president publicly entertained the idea of a pardon in the Oval Office, admitting he hadn't been following the story too closely. More Trending Combs is reportedly holding out hope that his decades-long connection to Trump could influence the former president's decision. While the details of Combs' incarceration and legal case remain under wraps, Agnifilo said his client is using the time to reflect. 'He's focusing on the blessings that he's been given, on the imperfections that I think he sees in himself.' Got a story?
