Mariska Hargitay reveals shocking discovery in new documentary about her mom

Miami Herald5 hours ago

Mariska Hargitay's new documentary tells her story just as much as it tells her mom's story.
The 61-year-old Emmy-winning actress, best known for her role in NBC's 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,' is making her feature film directorial debut with her new doc titled, 'My Mom Jayne.'
The film tells the legacy of Hargitay's mother, Jayne Mansfield, nearly six decades after her death.
On June 13, Hargitay was joined by her husband, Peter Hermann, and their three kids at Carnegie Hall for a special screening of the film at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
And one scene, in particular, is going viral.
In the documentary, Hargitay is talking to her brother, Zoltan, about the day they (along with their other brother, Mickey) survived a 1967 car crash that killed their mother, her then-boyfriend Sam Brody, and the driver.
The three kids, all under 8 years old, were in the backseat of the car at the time of the crash.
While recalling the accident, Zoltan remembered 'waking up in a car with a blonde-haired woman who had helped rescue the children' after the crash, according to People.
At first, Zoltan thought the woman was his mother before realizing it wasn't.
After being pulled from the wreckage, Zoltan remembers looking around and noticing that his sister, then 3-year-old Mariska, wasn't among them. When he asked where his sister was, the adults in the vehicle realized she was left at the scene, still inside the mangled car.
Hargitay was found lodged under the passenger seat with a head injury, according to People.
A 1967 New York Times article further revealed that Hargitay had 'head cuts and may require plastic surgery.' Zoltan had reportedly suffered a broken arm and cuts, while Mickey had cuts and bruises.
'Thank God Zolie woke up,' Hargitay's stepmom, Ellen, said of Zoltan in the documentary.
According to Zoltan, Mansfield was originally in the backseat with her three kids, but moved to the front seat to continue the argument she was having with Brody, People reported.
'I often think about why she didn't just stay in the backseat with us,' Zoltan wonders, per HuffPost.
'But I remember her comforting me, telling me I was going to be fine. Twenty minutes later, half an hour, I heard her scream so loud, and that was it,' he recalled.
Hargitay's new documentary premiered May 17 at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in France.
It was there that Hargitay revealed that Mickey Hargitay, the only father she had ever known, wasn't her biological father. Instead, her real father was Brazilian-born Italian singer Nelson Sardelli, 90.
Hargitay said she first learned the news when she was 30 years old.
Upon meeting, Sardelli told Hargitay that he had 'been waiting 30 years for this moment.'
While Hargitay struggled with the realization that she had been 'living a lie' her entire life, the revelation didn't change who she was — or where she came from.
'I grew up where I was supposed to, and I do know that everyone made the best choice for me,' she told Vanity Fair. 'I'm Mickey Hargitay's daughter — that is not a lie.'
At the Tribeca Film Festival, Hargitay opened up about what it means to finally tell her story.
'This is my story to tell,' Mariska told People at the event. 'I had a rough time with the fact that somebody else told it before I did, and that was the impetus of the movie — that I wanted to tell my story.'
She goes on to say that her story felt 'protected' until she was ready to tell it.
'I encourage a lot of women, and men, to tell their stories,' she told People, further describing it as 'empowering' before adding that it 'gives ourselves back parts of ourselves.'
'My Mom Jayne' is scheduled to make its official premiere June 27 on HBO and Max.

Food Network Star Anne Burrell Has Died At The Age Of 55

Anne Burrell, adored chef and Food Network on-camera personality, has died at the age of 55, according to a report from People. The news was confirmed by representatives for Burrell, who said she passed away Tuesday morning, June 17, at her Brooklyn, New York home. Anne was best known as the host of Food Network's iconic Worst Cooks in America, where she helped transform kitchen disasters into competent home cooks throughout the show's nearly 30 seasons. Over the years, she appeared in many other Food Network shows, including Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, Chef Wanted, Chopped, Food Network Star, and Iron Chef America. She made her Food Network debut with Iron Chef America in 2005, where she served as one of Chef Mario Batali's sous chefs (and continued on his team through his tenure). Anne's extensive culinary background and knack for "tough love" mentorship made her a standout in the world of food personalities; she studied at the Culinary Institute of America, trained in Italy, and worked in a number of well-regarded New York City restaurants. Throughout her celebrated career, she authored two cookbooks — Cook Like a Rock Star and Own Your Kitchen. She was also involved in several philanthropic efforts, including work with City Harvest and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Anne is survived by her husband, Stuart Claxton, his son Javier, her mother Marlene, her sister Jane, her brother Ben, and their children. "Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered," her family said in a statement. "Anne's light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal."

Barbra Streisand Can't Remember If She Had Sex With Warren Beatty

It's safe to say Barbra Streisand doesn't mind raining on someone else's parade. Over the weekend, the New Yorker published an interview with the Funny Girl star in which editor David Remnick pressed Streisand about an interesting tidbit in her 2023 memoir, My Name Is Barbra. 'Possibly the greatest line in the whole book, to my mind, is you say you can't remember if you slept with Warren Beatty,' Remnick said. 'Now, I don't think anyone has ever written that line in the history of sex, or Hollywood, or anything,' he added about the heartthrob. 'I know I slept in the bed with him, but I can't remember if we actually had penetration,' Streisand admitted. 'I swear to God, I can't. There are certain things I block out.' Despite Streisand's claim that she has no idea if she properly met Beatty's little Dick Tracy, it seems like the two have had plenty of time to clear up that detail being that Streisand also told the magazine they're 'still friends.' 'Every year on my birthday, he calls me and we have a wonderful talk about our lives, our children, and so forth,' the 'Don't Rain on my Parade' singer said. 'So we're still friends. I met him when I was fifteen years old, and he was twenty-one, I think.' In her memoir, The Way We Were star wrote about her first impression of Beatty, saying that he was 'tall with movie-star looks, and women were already falling at his feet,' per People. And if that sounds like a pretty accurate description of any f-boy, it likely explains why Streisand was so flippant toward Playboy in 1977 when the magazine asked her if she and Beatty were ever 'romantically linked.' 'I said blithely, 'One of my flings,'' Streisand wrote in her book of the Playboy interview, per the New York Post. 'I was just tossing off a reply, playing the role of a jaded woman of the world.'

Anne Burrell, a celebrity chef and beloved Food Network host, died Tuesday morning at her home in Brooklyn, N.Y., according to her family. She was 55. "Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered," her family said in a statement obtained by People. Burrell began her television cooking career as a sous chef on Iron Chef America in 2005. She went on to host her own series, Food Network's Secrets of a Restaurant Chef for nine seasons from 2008 until 2012, before becoming the longtime host of Worst Cooks in America, where she helped amateur cooks hone their skills. Burrell went on to star in several more shows for the network, including Chef Wanted, Chopped, Food Network Star and, most recently, House of Knives. 'Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent – teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring. Our thoughts are with Anne's family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss,' a statement from the Food Network said. Burrell shared her final Instagram post on June 12. The celebrity chef, who was also a New York native, posted about running into Elizabeth Sweetheart, 74, an artist known as 'Green Lady of Brooklyn.' 'I ran into @greenladyofbrooklyn in my neighborhood today!! I'm not going to lie- I have been keeping an eye out for her. I may or may not have followed her down the street for a minute. She is just lovely!!! #ilovewhatido #luckygirl 💚💚💚' wrote Burrell. Burrell is survived by her husband Stuart Claxton, whom she married in October 2021, her stepson Javier, her mother Marlene, along with her sister, Jane, her children Isabella, Amelia and Nicolas, and her brother Ben.
