'I can't live up to that': The Chosen's Jonathan Roumie on the pressures of playing Jesus

CBC14-04-2025

When you think about the biggest shows streaming on TV right now, you might picture Severance or The White Lotus. But there's one show that's been watched by an estimated 280 million people worldwide that you might not even be aware of.
It's called The Chosen, and it's a historical drama that chronicles the life of Jesus, played by Jonathan Roumie. While Roumie is not the first actor to portray Jesus on-screen (Jim Caviezel famously played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ, Ted Neeley in Jesus Christ Superstar and Victor Garber in Godspell), he says The Chosen differs from anything else that's come before.
"We get a deeper glimpse into the fullness of the humanity of Jesus as a character," Roumie tells Q guest host Garvia Bailey in an interview. "As Christians, we believe that Jesus was both fully human as well as fully divine, and most of the depictions in cinematic history tend to focus on the divine and on the mystical side of Jesus, the ethereal aspect, with a very nominal, at best, amount of his humanity thrown in.
"I think one of the most recent and rare glimpses that people had ever seen of a human side to Jesus was with Mel Gibson's The Passion in 2004, where there's this sort of flashback moment that Jesus has, thinking about building a table as a carpenter, and his mother is asking him questions. He goes then … to wash up and he splashes her with water. And it's just this fun, light moment in the midst of this very heavy drama."
But big roles often come with a lot of pressure — and playing a holy figure like Jesus takes that to a whole other level. Roumie remembers being conflated with his character during a fan interaction, when they expressed their hope that he could heal them.
"I spoke at this event with Pastor Greg Laurie. He's a well-known evangelical pastor in Southern California," Roumie says. "I was getting ready to leave [when] security outside the room … basically said, 'Hey, there's a woman outside that wants to meet you, and she has a son with her who's in a wheelchair. Do you want to meet them?'"
After agreeing to meet the woman and her son, Roumie realized that the son had a condition that left him largely incapacitated and unable to move from the neck down. The mother told Roumie that their favourite scene from the show was from an episode in Season 1, where Jesus heals a man who's paralyzed.
WATCH | Jesus heals the paralytic:
"She says, 'That's our favourite scene. We love that scene. We came here wanting to hear you speak and I just thought to myself, wouldn't it be great if God healed my son?'" Roumie recalls.
"She's looking at me and I'm thinking, does she expect me to do that? And the only thing I could muster in this sort of slightly awkward silence was, 'Yeah, that would be amazing. I don't have that gift, but I'd be happy to pray with you if that's OK.' And she said, 'Yeah, sure, sure.' I just burst into tears because on some level … she must have been disappointed…. But I can't live up to that. I couldn't live it up to it."
Roumie says playing a figure like Jesus — "the ultimate role model of humanity" — sets an impossibly high standard that he can't live up to as an actor. The best he can do is to try and follow His example.
"There is never an end to the journey of self-improvement," he says. "And I think [Jesus] challenges us to love the people that we find the hardest to love."

'In between writing and directing seasons of 'The White Lotus,' Mike White is back,' 'Survivor' host Jeff Probst said. 'Survivor,' which has been credited with changing the landscape of reality television, tosses a group of contestants into a remote location where they are separated into tribes who have to build shelter and live with minimal resources. Contestants also compete in mental and physical challenges, but much of the competition is social. White previously appeared on Season 37 in 2018, titled 'David vs. Goliath.' The filmmaker lasted until Day 39, where he faced the final tribal council before losing out to Nick Wilson (who is now a Kentucky state lawmaker). White also competed on CBS' 'The Amazing Race' in 2009 and 2011 with his father, Mel White. After working on a slew of projects in the 2010s, including 'The Emoji Movie,' 'Pitch Perfect 3,' and the TV series 'Enlightened,' White developed 'The White Lotus,' which debuted in 2021 on HBO. The hit drama, which recently completed its third season, follows wealthy guests and the staff at fictional luxury resorts where murder, mayhem and lorazepam are all on the table. White has said that his experiences on 'Survivor' paved the way for 'The White Lotus.' He has even cast previous 'Survivor' contestants – like Alec Merlino and Angelina Keeley (who is also coming back to 'Survivor' for Season 50) – for cameos on the show. ''Survivor' is not that dissimilar, which is a lot of times just people kind of kvetching about who's tending the fire or they're hangry because they haven't had anything to eat,' he told NPR in 2022 about the connections between the two shows. 'But then the music is making it feel like this is going to end up bad for somebody. And then you have these transitions of sharks in the water. And I was like, we do that in 'White Lotus.'' White also referenced the show when accepting an award for 'White Lotus' at the 2022 Emmys. 'On 'Survivor,' the way to stay in the game is you lower your threat level,' he said. 'And it's like, now I feel like I've raised my threat level. And I just want to stay in the game. Awards are great, I love writing, I love doing what I do. Don't come for me. Don't vote me off the island, please!' White will have his next chance to survive being voted off the island in spring 2026, when the show is expected to air on CBS and stream on Paramount Plus. ‘Duck Dynasty' patriarch Phil Robertson dead at 79

Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson has died at the age of 79. In an emotional Instagram post, Phil's son, Willie Robertson, and his daughter-in-law, Korie Robertson, confirmed his death on May 25. 'We celebrate today that our father, husband, and grandfather, Phil Robertson, is now with the Lord,' the couple wrote. 'He reminded us often of the words of Paul, 'You do not grieve like those who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.'' 'Thank you for the love and prayers of so many whose lives have been impacted by his life saved by grace, by his bold faith, and by his desire to tell everyone who would listen (to) the Good News of Jesus. We are grateful for his life on earth and will continue the legacy of love for God and love for others until we see him again,' the post concluded. Story continues below advertisement A cause of death was not immediately shared. The reality TV star's family previously shared in December that Phil was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Phil's son, Jase Robertson, posted a tribute to his father on X, writing, 'My dad has gone to be with the Lord today! He will be missed and we know he is in good hands, and our family is good because God is very good! We will see him again.' My dad has gone to be with the Lord today! He will be missed but we know he is in good hands, and our family is good because God is very good! We will see him again! #PhilRobertson #Jesus — Jase Robertson (@JaseDuckman) May 26, 2025 Story continues below advertisement Phil's granddaughter, Sadie Robertson Huff, shared a post on Instagram with a series of photos of her grandfather. 'As I was sitting with Papaw Phil today, I thought about this verse … he has already experienced this on earth — going from dead to alive by the power of Christ! It was his testimony that changed his life, our families life, and thousands of others,' she wrote. 'Now he is experiencing it in the fullness. Fully alive in Christ. The new has come. One of the last things he said to me was 'full strength ahead!' Amen,' Robertson Huff added. The official Instagram account for Duck Dynasty also shared a statement after news of Phil's death spread. Story continues below advertisement 'We are saddened to hear of the passing of Phil Robertson, a hunting industry pioneer and the patriarch of the beloved Robertson family. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences and respect their privacy as they grieve,' the statement read. Jase shared that the patriarch was diagnosed with the 'early stages' of Alzheimer's disease on a Dec. 6 episode of the Unashamed with the Robertson Family podcast. I think I spoke on the 1000th podcast. We were trying to figure out the diagnosis, but according to the doctors, they are sure that he has some sort of blood disease causing all kinds of problems,' he said at the time. Story continues below advertisement Jase said that the disease had 'accelerated, and it's causing problems with his entire body.' 'And he has early stages of Alzheimer's. So, if you put those things together, he's just not doing well. He's really struggling,' Jase added. He told fans of the family that his father wanted to return to work. 'I'm like, 'Well Phil, you can barely walk around without crying out in pain, and your memory is not what it once was.' He's like, 'Tell me about it.' So he is literally unable to — I think he would agree — to just sit down and have a conversation,' he said. 'We're trying to do a lot of things to figure out how to make him more comfortable and maybe help with his memory,' Jase added. Story continues below advertisement 'We've got a team of doctors and then we have another set of doctors who are looking at all the test(s) and they're all in agreement that there's no curing what he has. And so you know, what do you do? We're trying to make him a little more comfortable,' he said. According to the Mayo Clinic, Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. It begins with the appearance of a build-up of proteins in the form of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, which causes brain cells to die over time and the brain to shrink. Early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include forgetting recent events or conversations. Over time, the disease leads to serious memory loss and affects a person's ability to do everyday tasks. There is currently no cure. 0:36 Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty says he has 3 things in common with Trump Phil and his extended family became wealthy manufacturing duck calls — called Duck Commander — and were turned into TV and pop culture stars by Duck Dynasty, which has set cable ratings records for a non-fiction series. Story continues below advertisement The series ran for 11 seasons before the family announced the show was coming to an end. 'After five years, we've decided … as a family for this to be the final chapter of the Duck Dynasty series,' Jase said. The immensely popular show premiered in 2012 and broke multiple records for viewership right out of the gate, averaging more than 11 million viewers in Season 4. In the past years, people slowly stopped watching the show, due in part to Phil's well-publicized homophobic comments. In 2013, Phil was suspended for a brief period from Duck Dynasty filming because of the hostile remarks. He told GQ magazine that the Bible views gay people as sinners akin to adulterers, prostitutes and swindlers. He returned to the show after a 'hiatus.' 'We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson's comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty,' A&E, the network that aired Duck Dynasty, said in a statement at the time. In 2017,it was announced that Phil was returning to TV but leaving the rest of the Duck Dynasty cast at home after he struck a deal with conservative digital network CRTV for a new series titled In the Woods With Phil. Story continues below advertisement The series focused on Phil's personal thoughts on various topics and ran for one season. In the first clip from the show, he spoke about his brief suspension from A&E for his offensive comments in the GQ story. 'What does a man do when they try to run him out of town for quoting a Bible verse?' Phil asked. 'I'll tell you what he does: he goes deep into the woods.' For far too long we've been told to shut up. Are you ready for In the Woods with Phil on @CRTV? — Phil Robertson (@DuckCommanderPR) October 12, 2017 Phil also said that he planned to reject 'political correctness' with his spin-off show. 'For far too long we have been told to shut up. No more. Here's the deal, America. These are my woods. Out here, I call the shots. Out here, we reject political correctness, or as I like to say, 'pontificated crap,'' he said. Story continues below advertisement Phil's death comes as the Duck Dynasty franchise is set to return to TV with Duck Dynasty: The Revival on June 1. The show will follow Willie and Korie Robertson and their family of six as they 'grapple with mapping out the future of Duck Commander,' according to the show's synopsis. A&E has already ordered two seasons of the spin-off, with 20 episodes for each season. — With files from Global News' Chris Jancelewicz
