Tesla's Robotaxi Is Driving Over Curbs and Into Courtrooms. It's Not Going Great.
Here's what you'll learn reading this story. Tesla shareholders are suing Elon Musk and his company for securities fraud, claiming they withheld information regarding the safety of their products. The lawsuit comes after the public testing phase for Tesla Robotaxis in Austin, TX. Videos from participants in the Robotaxi Pilot Program showed vehicles exhibiting alarming behaviors, including dropping off passengers in the middle of intersections and driving into opposing lanes. We previously reported that Tesla's Robotaxi rollout in Austin, TX, was less than a resounding success. We knew it wasn't going to go to plan—especially after the brand announced each taxi would need a safety monitor in the passenger seat to intervene. But things just got significantly worse for Tesla, as its shareholders are suing the company for securities fraud, arguing that Tesla didn't disclose that its Robotaxi and other autonomous vehicles were dangerous. Securities fraud is the misrepresentation or omission of information to induce investors into trading securities—'securities' being legal speak for investments that can be traded on financial markets. Unsurprisingly, if you're an investor, you probably wouldn't be pleased if the company you're supporting lied to you about its products. The Details Reuters reported that the proposed class action was filed on Monday following the Robotaxi's public test in late June. Footage from many Tesla fans who participated in the pilot program revealed the vehicles exhibiting alarming behavior, including entering the wrong lane, dropping passengers off in the middle of multi-lane roads or intersections, speeding, and driving over a curb. The video above, from Rob Maurer, documents his Robotaxi ride through South Austin earlier this year. About midway through the journey, the vehicle can be seen making an attempt to drive into the oncoming lane as it prepares to make a left turn. The other notable misstep comes at the end of the video, when the Tesla runs over the curb at its final destination. Parsing through YouTube, we can say with confidence that there are hundreds of similar videos highlighting the shortcomings of the 'unsupervised' variant of Tesla's Full-Self-Driving software. What Happens Next? Reuters interviewed a spokesperson for the city of Austin who said that officials are aware of the issues documented in many of these videos, and are actively sharing legal and safety concerns with Tesla. The same report revealed that the Austin Police Department is collaborating with Tesla to make sure its officers can safely interact with Robotaxis. Currently, there are many 'autonomous' rideshare services operating in Austin. Waymo is the only service that has developed a system that doesn't need a safety monitor in the passenger seat. Buy a Car or a House: Which Is the Better Deal for You Right Now?
Deciding between buying a car or a house is one of the most significant financial choices in 2025. Both involve long-term commitments and can have a lasting impact on personal finances. While the two serve different purposes, the smarter investment depends on individual circumstances, financial priorities and current market trends. Read More: Find Out: According to real estate expert Robert Grunnah, founder of Castle Hill Investments and Austin House Buyer, only one offers lasting value. 'Houses win this competition hands down because they build wealth and autos destroy it with depreciation,' Grunnah said. 'Real estate appreciates over time and generates tax savings, equity appreciation and potential rental income, while cars depreciate 20%-30% the instant you purchase them and continue to do so.' Homeownership offers benefits such as equity growth and fixed monthly payments. Programs like FHA loans and first-time buyer tax credits provide support for qualifying buyers. The mortgage interest deduction also remains available for many homeowners, according to the IRS. Still, buying a house requires a significant upfront investment. A 20% down payment on a $440,000 home totals $88,000, not including closing costs and ongoing maintenance expenses. The process can also be complex, with potential financial risk if personal circumstances change or the market shifts. The Car Market in 2025 The automotive market in 2025 faces rising prices, elevated interest rates and growing demand for electric vehicles. The average price of a new car remains over $48,000, according to Kelley Blue Book (KBB), and loan rates have increased across the board. 'Car prices remain high due to supply chain disruptions and the shift to electric vehicles is calling into question the resale value of conventional cars,' Grunnah explained. 'Gas-powered vehicles are at risk of accelerated depreciation.' Learn More: The average new vehicle loses about 55% of its value within the first five years, according to KBB. By contrast, home values have increased at a much faster pace. U.S. home prices have appreciated about 8% to 9% per year over the past five years and about 6% to 7% annually over the past decade, according to NCHStats. Grunnah recommends keeping car purchases modest. 'A good used car in the $15,000 to $20,000 range is adequate for transportation needs without the massive depreciation hit of buying a new car,' he said. 'The plan preserves money for the ultimate home purchase, which builds wealth in the long term.' Comparing Long-Term Value From a financial standpoint, homes typically outperform cars in value retention. 'I've watched clients build six-figure wealth through homeownership over the past 20 years, while their car payments became monthly financial drains,' said Grunnah. Both homes and vehicles are commonly financed, but only mortgages contribute to long-term equity. Homeowners may benefit from appreciation, refinancing opportunities, or rental income. Cars, on the other hand, continue to lose value over time and offer no return on investment. 'Homeowners accumulate wealth more reliably than renters who put the same dollars into car loans and increased insurance,' Grunnah said. 'The numbers unequivocally favor housing as the foundation of wealth.' So, Is a Car or a House the Better Deal? The decision to buy a car or a house depends heavily on lifestyle and personal goals. For individuals or families planning to settle down, homeownership often aligns with the goals of stability and wealth building. For others, especially those who relocate frequently or have flexible living arrangements, a car may be a more practical and immediate purchase. Ultimately, the choice depends on individual priorities, market conditions and financial health. Both a house and a car have roles in building a secure and convenient lifestyle, but timing and circumstances will dictate which is the better deal in 2025. 'Intelligent consumers should purchase a house first and then opt for the most economical, dependable transportation available that meets their needs,' Grunnah concluded. NYPD buying $389K Wall-E style bomb robot for emergency service operations
The NYPD is shelling out nearly $400,000 for a remote controlled Wall-E look-alike robot that can roll into danger — so cops don't have to. The PackBot 525 — built by Brooklyn-based defense company FLIR — will be deployed by the department's Emergency Service Unit, The Post has learned. 'This one has a crazy mechanical arm,' a police source said. 'They can pick up weapons. Let's say a suspect is barricaded with a knife. You communicate through the robot. Advertisement 4 The NYPD's new PackBot 525 can be deployed ahead of cops to inspect suspicious packages and clear dangerous rooms. Teledyne FLIR 'It can open a door and pick up the knife or a gun.' The city is shelling out about $390,000 for the super high-tech helper, which cops will control remotely. Advertisement The robot will be ESU's first response in bomb threat situations, letting police move and inspect suspicious packages from a safe distance, the source said. While it can't actually use a weapon, in a barricade it can clear rooms, relay video and audio and 'protects the officers,' the source added. The bot is equipped with HD cameras, improved lighting, a laser range finder and can lift up to 44 pounds, according to the manufacturer. It can be used for bomb disposal, surveillance, scouting and detecting or handling hazardous materials and radiation, and stows neatly in a vehicle — even fitting in a standard-sized car's trunk, the company's website claims. 4 ESU officers will control the PackBot remotely, using its HD cameras and improved lighting to scout scenes in real time. Teledyne FLIR Advertisement 'The new robot will allow our ESU officers to gain better command and control at the scene of an incident,' an NYPD spokesperson said. 'The robot can be used to navigate obstructions in a room and scan for persons in need of help.' The NYPD has been steadily adding mechanical muscle to its ranks over the last few years. In 2023, it brought back DigiDog — a 70-pound robotic canine that can be sent into dangerous situations — after shelving an earlier version that critics called dystopian. 4 The Wall-E lookalike — a $389,940 bot — can also detect hazardous materials and radiation without putting officers in harm's way. ©Walt Disney Co./Courtesy Everett Collection Advertisement The PackBot is 'almost like DigiDog but a little more advanced,' the NYPD source said, and better suited for handling hostage situations. 'ESU really wants this,' the source added. The department piloted a 400-pound Autonomous Security Robot in Times Square that same year, but scrapped it after just four months — in part because it needed a cop chaperone and couldn't climb stairs. 4 The PackBot 525's compact design allows it to stow neatly in a police vehicle, even fitting in a standard car trunk. Teledyne FLIR And in 2024, it bought 14 'throw bots' that can be tossed into active scenes to beam back live video and audio. FLIR, an acronym for Forward-Looking Infrared, specializes in thermal imaging cameras and sensors and became part of California-based defense and electronics giant Teledyne Technologies in 2021.
