ITV confirms air date of Jodie Whittaker drama – a year after it was dropped

ITV has finally confirmed the air date for Jodie Whittaker's new drama — a year after it was mysteriously dropped from schedules. The former Doctor Who star will front the long-awaited series, which is now set to hit screens later this month. 5 One Night follows Jodie Whittaker alongside Yael Stone and Nicole da Silva as three friends bound by a dark secret that resurfaces years later, threatening to tear their lives apart. The gritty drama promises twists, tension, and powerhouse performances from its all-star cast. A month after Aussie drama One Night dropped in the UK last November, it vanished from Paramount+ without warning — just three months after landing on the platform. At the time, bosses blamed a shift towards ' Hollywood -style' content with mass appeal, alongside cost-cutting moves. Now ITV has swooped in to bring the series back, giving fans the chance to watch — or discover it for the first time. The full drama will stream from Saturday, August 16, with the first episode also airing on ITV1 that night. One Night marked Jodie's first TV role since making history as Doctor Who's first female Time Lord. The 41-year-old star said she was drawn to the project because it tackled a story about sexual assault in a way she found 'completely unique' — offering a fresh and powerful perspective on a difficult subject. She told the Metro: "'What made this completely unique to me and completely engrossing was the change of POV. "Very often it's told from outside in – there's an investigation, there's detectives, there's people working things out. Jodie Whittaker speaks out on Doctor Who future "This is about the decimation something like that can have. "It's also about how the event – whether it happened a minute ago or 20 years ago – is defining for a group of women that it affects, particularly this friendship group. "But also what it's about is how we all survive something like that and who owns memory, who has the right to tell stories, and especially if that story is true." The Sun revealed in April how Doctor Who could be facing the axe - with lead Ncuti Gatwa poised to quit and crew claiming to be laid off. Jodie - who played the Thirteenth Doctor - spoke out about the show's future. During an interview with Off Air with Jane and Fi, Jodie was asked whether the programme could "come back bigger and brighter." She replied: "Every time there's a Doctor Who, I think there's some comment. "I don't necessarily read anything to do with it now, but I watch it and I'm a huge fan of Ncuti [Gatwa]. "There is nothing more loyal and more beautiful than the Whovian community." Jodie added: "So I don't think necessarily its fandom's reducing any way. "So on a grown up basis of statistics, I've no idea, I'm completely unqualified." The Sun previously told how show bosses have postponed any decision until Ncuti's second season has aired later this year. His first series, which began last May, attracted between 2.25million and 3.18million viewers. The actor is already believed to have filmed his regeneration exit scene — and crew fear the BBC will shelve the show after 62 years. Meanwhile, Jodie has also teamed up with Suranne Jones for a thrilling new heist drama called Frauds. The two queens of the small screen star as duo Bert and Sam, whose intertwined past resurfaces in the setting of Southern Spain after a decade of separation. Bert, played by Suranne, is fresh from a spell in a Spanish prison but hellbent on one final, multi-million-pound art heist so calls on old pal Sam (Whittaker). The six-parter, which will air later this year on ITV, was filmed in Spain in January and also stars Karan Gill, Christian Cooke and Talisa Garcia. One Night is streaming on ITVX from Saturday August 16 and will air that night at 9.30pm on ITV1. 5 5 5

Dawn Dusk review – handbag designer deals with grief over murdered sister and dead friend

Chicago-based Chelli Look, the subject at the centre of this diffuse documentary, seems like a nice person, with a talent for designing and making minimalist leather handbags. Not long out of high school, the best friend with whom she planned to start a business died in a car accident. Then her elder sister, Megan Henneberg, was murdered in 2007 by her husband Brian, leaving Chelli, her parents, siblings and extended family to deal with the harrowing loss. And yet, no matter how much sympathy you might feel for Chelli and her family's trauma, or interest you might have in her bagmaking skills, or engagement with her as a person, somehow those core components don't coalesce to make this feature-length documentary feel vital or even especially necessary. A self-described introvert, Chelli herself is a pretty opaque figure although she speaks quite expressively and intelligently about her approach to design. We only get tiny glimpses of her home life with husband David, so she's not really developed as a 'character' sufficiently to carry the film. Meanwhile, the story around her sister's murder has something of a shroud around it, which is understandable to an extent, but then turns the film into a strange fan dance, alternating revelation with concealment about the facts of the case. In the end, the fact that Chelli found a way to forgive her brother-in-law in a religious sense, seems to be the big takeaway, but the wafty haziness around the whole issue reduces the murder to a brutal but incidental noise off-screen. The most engaging parts of the film are the scenes where Chelli is at work at her fancy industrial Juki sewing machine in her alarmingly tidy, sepulchre-white studio. The hum of the machinery is as seductively lulling as an ASMR video and watching Chelli buy leather hides is pure shopping pornography. Even more visually lush is the sequence where Chelli goes off to Florence to take a course in leatherwork and design to refine her skills, offering the film-makers a chance to shoot one of the world's more photogenic cities at crepuscular times of the day. All of which makes the surprise ending even more baffling, denying viewers the redemption–through–small-business-ownership ending the film appears to be striving for. Dawn Dusk is on digital platforms from 15 August.

Neighbours star hits back after being labelled a nepo-baby – can you guess her 90s rock legend dad?

NEIGHBOURS star April Rose Pengilly has hit back at claims that she's a nepo-baby – but can you guess her famous father? The 37-year-old actress and model had a five-year stint on the Australian soap, playing Chloe Brennan from 2018 to 2023. 9 9 9 9 Starting off her career by modelling in her teens, her proud parents have been seen cheering her on. While she admits her famous rocker dad's famous lineage does 'play on her mind' she insists she made a name for herself on her own merit and doesn't appreciate the term. Her parents? Iconic rocker, INXS guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly, and accessories designer Karen Hutchinson. In a new interview with Stellar magazine this weekend, April says she doesn't want to live in her famous dad's shadow. Revealing when she started her career at 16, she immediately hit the road without using her family's name. 'Eventually people figured it out. I'm glad I did it though, because I basically proved to myself that I could make it work,' she said. 'Anything written about me, they'd usually bring my father into it. I'd see comments, and any success I had, it was, 'Oh, it's just because of her dad.',' she added. 'That does play on your mind.' She credits her role in Neighbours for being taken seriously as an actress, particularly thanks to UK viewers – where the soap had a devoted fanbase – not realising the connection. However, she became so beloved on the show that she joked fans approach her father and call him 'April's dad' instead of her being considered just 'Kirk's daughter'. Jet - Never Tear Us Apart Now, as she prepares to marry fiancé Adam Paul in a 'fairytale' French wedding next month, she's vowed not to give up her surname. 'I've had this name my whole life, so I do feel attached to it. It makes me feel close to my dad, that it's his name,' she explained. Parents Kirk and Karen were together for 10 years, with April – born in 1988 – their only child. 9 9 9 9 9
