Waupun man convicted of reckless homicide in 2023 fentanyl overdose death
According to a release from the Fond du Lac District Attorney's Office, 27-year-old Dylan Mayne was found to be responsible for the death of one victim and the overdose of another.

In a criminal complaint obtained by Local Five, on May 17, 2023, officers from the Waupun Police Department responded at 6:13 p.m. to a home on Franklin Street in Waupun after a witness called and stated that the victim was dead and that it could be a drug-related incident.
Officials say they found the victim lying on his back in bed with a reddish foam blood trail from his mouth to his bed. The victim was then pronounced dead at the scene.
The complaint notes that the victim did have past contact with police due to drug-related incidents and a baggie was found under his body containing .9 grams of a white powdery substance that tested positive for fentanyl, codeine, heroin, morphine, and/or oxycodone.
Three other baggies weighing a combined 6.2 grams and containing a white powdery substance were also found at the scene, along with two Apple iPhones.
In the complaint, witnesses told authorities the victim had recently been in contact with Mayne and one other person who was believed to have overdosed and was med-flighted to a hospital in Madison earlier that morning.
Phone records and surveillance footage confirmed that Mayne had discussed and met up with the victim at 10:34 p.m. the night before the victim's death to drop off the drugs.
The complaint states that the autopsy of the victim's body revealed that he had alcohol, fentanyl, norfentanyl, and 4-ANPP in his system at the time of his death, with the cause of death confirmed to be 'fentanyl toxicity.'
In August, authorities spoke with the person who overdosed on the same day that the victim died. During that time, they admitted to Mayne giving themselves the drugs they overdosed on and the victim the drugs that led to his death.
Mayne, who was in treatment when officials first attempted to make contact with him, was found and arrested on May 15, 2024, on charges of first-degree reckless Homicide.

Following the jury conviction on Friday, May 2, 2025, Fond du Lac District Attorney Eric Toney stated the following:
Too many families continue to suffer from the devastating effects of fentanyl and opioids, as we see fentanyl destroying families and communities. We will continue working with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to aggressively prosecute those that distribute poison into our communities. A conviction can't bring a loved one back, but it might save someone else or spur another to seek treatment.
At this time, court records have not yet been updated to show when Mayne is expected to be back in court for sentencing.

Family members of the man who was killed during a boat crash with an allegedly intoxicated San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputy are calling for justice. La Verne father of two Weston Stewart, 38, died after his boat collided with another boat on the Colorado River, just south of the Needles bridge in Needles, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Stewart's family members are concerned about the fairness of that investigation, given that Southworth is not only a deputy, but one of six local first responders who were nationally recognized in 2018 for their response to the San Bernardino workplace terror attack in 2015. "I don't take any enjoyment in his peril, but at the same time, he killed my brother, you know?" Peyton Stewart said. "We think he will get preferential treatment." He says that some witnesses told him Southworth was driving recklessly prior to the crash and that people were telling him to slow down. "You just hope it's not a conflict of interest where they have better intentions for one party versus the other," said Samantha Stewart, Weston's sister-in-law. "We'll never got Weston back." They remember him as a man with a personality and heart larger than life who spent most of his time on the water. As the investigation continues and they begin to wade through the difficulties of their loss, friends have started a GoFundMe to help Weston's sons. Additional charges filed against Delta pilot accused of child sexual abuse; 2nd suspect arrested
Additional charges of child sex abuse were filed against a Delta Airlines pilot who was pulled off a Minneapolis-to-San Francisco flight upon arrival over the weekend, and authorities said a second suspect was arrested. The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office said it filed a 24-count felony complaint in Superior Court Tuesday against Florida resident Rustom Bhagwagar, which includes charges of engaging in a sexual act with a child 10 years old or younger, aggravated sexual assault of a child, forceable lewd acts, and other sexual abuse charges. The DA's Office said the crimes against the child happened between 2018 and 2023 in Contra Costa County. In addition, authorities charged a 45-year-old woman in a related complaint with the same 24 felony counts. She was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility, according to jail records. The charges against both the woman and Bhagwagar carry terms of 15 years to life in state prison, the DA's Office said. Because of the victim's age and the nature of the allegations, the DA's Office said the victim is not being named to protect her identity. CBS News Bay Area is not identifying the female suspect. "Our office stands firmly committed to protecting children and holding those who cause harm accountable," said District Attorney Diana Becton in a prepared statement. "Every child deserves to feel safe, protected, and heard when an injustice like this occurs. By pursuing these cases vigorously, we not only seek justice for victims but also work to safeguard our entire community from those who would prey on children." Bhagwagar was the co-pilot aboard Delta Flight 2809 when federal agents and Contra Costa Sheriff's deputies stormed the cockpit after the plane arrived at the gate upon landing at SFO Saturday evening, removing him in front of stunned passengers and crew members. Bhagwagar is being held on $15 million bail at the Martinez Detention Facility. His arraignment is scheduled for 1:35 pm in Martinez on Wednesday. Jail records do not show a bail amount for the female suspect.

CNN chyrons labeling New York shooter as white are fake
After a gunman opened fire in a Manhattan skyscraper July 28, 2025, killing four people including a police officer, right-wing critics of CNN shared images that appear to show the news network airing photos of suspect Shane Tamura with text labeling him as "a white male." But the chyrons are fake, a spokesperson told AFP. "You absolutely cannot hate the media enough!! Especially CNN!!" says a July 28, 2025 post from Juanita Broaddrick, who accused former US president Bill Clinton of rape in 1999 and has repeatedly spread misinformation on X, where she has 1.8 million followers. The post supposedly depicts a CNN broadcast showing the New York City gunman carrying an M-4 rifle. The text in the lower third of the screen reads: "Police are looking for a white male average build." Similar posts popped up across platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Other posts showed a close-up photo of the alleged perpetrator above a purported CNN chyron saying, "Shooting suspect appears to be a white male." The claims spread after the July 28 shooting in an office tower housing the National Football League, hedge fund giant Blackstone and auditor KPMG, where a gunman opened fire in the lobby and again on the 33rd floor before killing himself. Officers found him next to his weapon. Police later identified the attacker as Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, Nevada, saying he is believed to have acted alone and had a history of mental health issues. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said July 29 that a suicide note Tamura carried referenced chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a known brain injury associated with contact sports. Adams said the shooter was targeting the NFL offices. AFP did not find official documentation of Tamura's race, and the supposed CNN chyrons identifying Tamura as a "white male" are fabricated. "These images are fake and doctored," a CNN spokesperson told AFP in a July 29 email, adding that the network never aired either chyron. About an hour after the attack and before police had found the suspect, CNN analyst John Miller reported on air that "they know he is a male, possibly white, he's wearing sunglasses, he appears to have a mustache." Anchor Erin Burnett then repeated that the shooter was "male, possibly white, mustache, sunglasses." The network later reported when the gunman was "tentatively identified" as a 27-year-old from Las Vegas and subsequently named. Both of the fake chyrons use different fonts and formats than authentic CNN broadcasts. One of them also carries a watermark indicating it originated with "@TheRicanMemes," a conservative meme account on X. AFP has previously debunked several other fake CNN broadcasts, including a similar fabricated chyron that purported to show the network describing a mass shooter in Maine as "factually Arabic, but morally white."
