Hexagon Purus ASA: Results for the first quarter 2025
Key developments in Q1 2025 and after balance sheet date:
Quarterly revenue of NOK 230 million in the first quarter of 2025, 44% lower compared to same quarter last year;
EBITDA of NOK -242 million in the first quarter of 2025, compared to NOK -97 million in the same period last year. EBITDA in the quarter was negatively affected by approximately NOK 65 million of restructuring costs and other non-recurring items;
Received first orders from Egyptian company MCV for delivery of hydrogen fuel storage systems for FCEV buses targeted for the European public transportation market;
Signed multi-year agreement with Stadler for delivery of hydrogen fuel storage systems for hydrogen rail applications in California;
CIMC-Hexagon, the Company's joint venture in China, produced its first commercial hydrogen cylinders in its facility in Shijiazhuang intended for the European market;
Exited the quarter with order backlog consisting of firm purchase orders of NOK 792 million.

Hexagon Purus Q1 2025 consolidated financials
In the first quarter of 2025, Hexagon Purus ('the Company' or 'the Group') generated revenue of NOK 230 million, down 44% compared to the corresponding period in 2024. The main reason for the revenue decline was significantly lower activity in the hydrogen infrastructure and hydrogen heavy-duty mobility application areas, partly offset by higher revenue from hydrogen transit bus and for the Battery Systems and Vehicle Integration (BVI) business unit.
Total operating expenses in the first quarter of 2025 ended at NOK 472 (504) million, leading to an operating profit before depreciation (EBITDA) of NOK -242 (-97) million, equivalent to an EBITDA margin of -105% (-24%). In total, restructuring costs and other non-recurring items amounted to approximately NOK 65 million in the quarter. Adjusting for these non-recurring items, EBITDA was NOK -177 million, equivalent to -77% margin.
Total assets at the end of the first quarter of 2025 amounted to NOK 4,503 (4,832)
million. Compared to year-end 2024 and the same quarter last year, the NOK strengthened against the USD and EUR by 7% and 3% respectively, translating to lower balance sheet values in NOK terms.
Inventory amounted to NOK 658 (577) million as of the end of the first quarter of 2025, and the majority of inventory consists of raw materials and items in work-in-progress. Trade receivables decreased sequentially in the first quarter of 2025 to NOK 275 (359) million.
Total equity was NOK 1,676 (2,085) million as per the first quarter of 2025, equal to an equity ratio of 37% (43%). The increase in non-current liabilities to NOK 2,174 (1,989) million is mainly driven by non-cash interest added to the principal of the two outstanding convertible bonds. Total current liabilities stood at 653 (758) million at the end of the first quarter of 2025, of which trade payables made up NOK 188 (243) million and which was sequentially down compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.
Net cash flow from operating activities in the first quarter of 2025 was NOK -183 (-211) million. Release of working capital amounted to NOK 45 (-109) million in the quarter, driven by a reduction in inventory and accounts receivables, which was partly offset by a reduction in trade payables.
Net cash flow from investing activities was NOK -35 (-132) million in the first quarter of 2025, of which NOK 28 (130) million relates to investments in production equipment and facilities and is mainly spill-over items from 2024 related to the Company's capacity expansion program. Capitalized product development was NOK 13 (4) million in the first quarter of 2025, and capital injections to CIMC Hexagon Hydrogen Energy Systems Ltd., was NOK 2 (0) million. Interest received on bank deposits in the first quarter of 2025 was NOK 8 (6) million.
Cash and cash equivalents ended at NOK 794 (965) million as of the first quarter of 2025.
Hydrogen Mobility and Infrastructure (HMI)
Revenue for the HMI segment in the first quarter of 2025 was NOK 204 million, down 47% compared to the corresponding period last year. The decline in revenue is primarily owed to lower activity in hydrogen infrastructure and heavy-duty hydrogen mobility, which is only partially offset by higher year-over-year revenue from the hydrogen transit bus segment. Revenue-mix wise, 21% (57%) of the HMI segment revenue in the first quarter of 2025 stemmed from hydrogen infrastructure solutions and amounted to NOK 42 (220) million, down 81% year-over-year. Within hydrogen infrastructure solutions, hydrogen distribution solutions made up most of the revenue in the quarter.
EBITDA for the HMI segment in the first quarter of 2025 ended at NOK -143 (-16) million, equivalent to an EBITDA margin of -70% (-4%) as the sharp decline in revenue reduced the segment's ability to absorb its fixed costs combined with a less profitable product mix. Restructuring costs related to the cost cutting program announced in February amounted to approximately NOK 38 million, and bad debt expense of approximately NOK 16 million related to two insolvent customers was also recognized during the quarter.

Battery Systems and Vehicle Integration (BVI)
Revenue for the BVI segment in the first quarter of 2025 was NOK 25 (19) million. The 35% year-over-year revenue growth was mainly driven by vehicle deliveries of the Tern RC8 to Hino as well as deliveries of battery systems to Toyota Motors North America. In the same quarter last year revenue was mainly made up of an extraordinary payment from an OEM customer for design and engineering services without any corresponding costs in the quarter.
BVI segment EBITDA ended at NOK -54 (-25) million in the first quarter of 2025. Restructuring costs related to the cost cutting program announced in February for the BVI segment amounted to approximately NOK 4 million. Additionally, an inventory write-down of NOK 6 million was made during the quarter.

Outlook
Hexagon Purus has for a while been operating in an environment with high uncertainty. The recent changes and volatility in US policy and the international trade environment has further negatively impacted the near-term outlook.
The Company has a well-diversified customer base and core technologies that are applicable to a wide range of end-use applications at varying stages of maturity. As evidenced by recent contract announcements, commercial momentum for hydrogen transit bus in Europe remains strong combined with selective wins in other end-use applications such as rail and aerospace. Incoming order activity for the hydrogen infrastructure business picked up in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the end of 2024, and revenue from hydrogen infrastructure is expected to increase in the second half of the year. However, looking at full-year 2025, revenue from hydrogen infrastructure solutions is expected to be significantly down year-over-year.
The US Hino dealer network continues to market the Tern branded truck towards its customers in the US, and initial customer feedback has been positive. Although the current political climate in the US has dampened the ramp-up curve for the Hino program, the Company is still expecting the BVI segment to grow its revenue significantly year-over-year for the full-year 2025.
The Company remains focused on reducing costs to enable profitability at lower volumes and is at the same time continuing to review its business portfolio. These initiatives are aimed at making the current cash balance last until the Company reaches EBITDA and cash break-even.

London Tribunal Rules that Visa and Mastercard's (MA) Fees Violate Competition Law
Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA) are once again under legal fire as a London tribunal ruled that their default multilateral interchange fees—charges applied to retailers each time a customer uses one of their cards—violate European competition law. These fees, set by Visa and Mastercard rather than negotiated individually, have long been criticized by retailers for being excessive and non-transparent. The latest ruling comes from the Competition Appeal Tribunal in the U.K., which sided unanimously with hundreds of merchants who brought the case after a decade-long legal battle over these charges. Confident Investing Starts Here: The law firm Scott+Scott, which represents the claimants, called the ruling a major victory. David Scott, the firm's global managing partner, said that the decision was 'a significant win for all merchants who have been paying excessive interchange fees to Visa and Mastercard.' According to the firm, this is the first time a court has found that both commercial card fees and inter-regional (cross-border) multilateral interchange fees violate competition law. The ruling confirms that Visa and Mastercard's fees unlawfully restricted competition by setting default rates that retailers had little choice but to accept. Despite the setback, both Visa and Mastercard pushed back strongly against the ruling. A Visa spokesperson said that the company 'continues to believe that interchange is a critical component to maintaining a secure digital payments ecosystem that benefits all parties, including consumers, merchants and banks.' Mastercard also criticized the decision by calling it 'deeply flawed' and stating that it would seek permission to appeal. A second phase of the litigation is still underway, which will determine whether merchants passed on the cost of these interchange fees to consumers through higher prices. That upcoming trial could influence the amount of any potential damages. Which Payment Stock Is the Better Buy? Turning to Wall Street, out of the two stocks mentioned above, analysts think that Mastercard stock has more room to run than Visa. In fact, Mastercard's price target of $639.86 per share implies 16.1% upside versus Visa's 11.8%.

Europe's Time Is Now (for Stablecoins)
Trump has come into office with a wrecking ball – and his acts of unpredictability, both domestically and abroad, have only hampered the dollar's status as the choice reserve currency. In the crypto world, this only means one thing – USD-pegged stablecoins will wane in dominance, leaving a vacuum for other currencies to pounce. And of them, it might just be the rapidly growing EUR coins that muscle up the hardest. Let's take a step back. Since Trump's inauguration, the dollar has fallen to a three-year low against a basket of major currencies, declining by approximately 5% over roughly the last six months. A combination of whimsical trade policy, feckless fiscal bets, and, overall, international antagonism have beleaguered the U.S. market, damning its equities, raising its Treasury yields, and taking an axe to the dollar. The U.S.'s prominence as the strongest and most stable economy has been tested. And we've even seen an 'Anywhere, but the USA' trade come to light as a result. With the U.S. economy and markets so volatile, investors have – as usual – fled to safe-haven assets like gold to mitigate any losses. But surprisingly, the euro has also risen up the ranks: according to a recent report by Reuters, central bankers across the globe are now looking at gold, the renminbi, and the euro as choice reserve assets. The world is diversifying away from the dollar – and that'll be sure to reflect in DeFi. Of course, that being said, I'm not talking about a full-fledged overtake here. In the stablecoin world, USD is very much king. Tether dominates nearly 70% of the market, and we've even seen Circle make headlines for securing a $5.4 billion IPO. But as the dollar wanes – especially to the point it makes losses against emerging markets and the G10 – I just think the market will broaden out. USD monopolies might not be as strong. Currently, there are 12 prominent euro-pegged stablecoins and 56 USD counterparts – a huge difference. But as the euro makes up its losses and gains further strength, who's to say these coins won't compete? With enthusiastic fiscal policy, stronger defence spending, and, of course, the momentum of capital flow, the euro has climbed to near pivotal $1.20. And if Trump continues on his current path, I expect this will only climb further. It's not just a trend of de-dollarization to factor in, either. The E.U. has become increasingly open to crypto, this year cementing the final provisions of the MiCA framework – giving crypto issuers the ability to attain licences and establish themselves in the regulated European market. Tether is not compliant with MiCA, giving alternative coins – including EUR-pegged ones, such as EURC – an opportunity to strengthen their regional market share. By way of that, the E.U. has subsequently adopted a more favorable and supportive stance toward crypto issuers. OKX, Coinbase, and soon perhaps even Gemini are all crypto issuers and exchanges with or about to receive EU approval. Forget Trump's vows to make the U.S. the 'crypto capital of the planet.' The EU is fast catching up. Europe is no longer the anti-innovation, bureaucratic monster it once was. It has palmed off its past scepticism, opened its doors to digital assets, and beyond that, as per Christine Lagarde, is ambitious enough to be pushing for its 'global euro moment.' It is truly capitalizing on the misfortunes of Uncle Sam, and I see no plausible reason as to how this won't reflect in the stablecoin market. I understand the attitude toward stablecoins is still mixed. The Bank of International Settlements has recently cast them off as a 'financial stability risk.' Even so, the global market cap of the broader ecosystem recently peaked at over $250 billion. The size, popularity, and appeal of the market cannot be denied. And they're certainly more practical than tokenised currencies, as BIS' Project Agora is attempting to push forward. As such, I don't see the stablecoin market contracting any time soon. And as long as Trump continues his heavy-handed approach and Europe capitalises on the fallout, I can only see issuers veering closer and closer to EUR-based coins. Complete de-dollarisation is far from realistic, but as long as the euro remains on its upward trajectory, so will investments into and transactions via the continent and its currency. By 2028 – and by that, I mean the end of Trump's term – I predict we'll see more EUR-pegged stablecoins come to the surface, and so much so that they'll even threaten their American counterparts. Recession risks, bear market risks, and, overall, a lack of investor confidence have taken the dollar into the doldrums. Europe's time is now.

Market Cap of Euro Stablecoins Surges to Nearly $500M as EUR/USD Rivals Bitcoin's H1 Gains
The Euro-U.S. dollar exchange (EUR/USD), the world's most liquid foreign exchange pair, has surged 12.88% in the first half, outperforming Nasdaq and S&P 500 and nearly rivaling bitcoin BTC 14.8% rise, according to data source TradingView. The strength of the euro has increased the appeal of stablecoins with values pegged to the euro. The cumulative market cap of 21 euro-pegged stablecoins tracked by data source Coingecko has increased 44% from $310 million to $480 million. Leading the growth is the U.S.-listed Circle's EURC stablecoin, whose market cap has increased by 138% to $200.36 million. "One of my best trades this year was to move my entire stablecoin stack from USDC/USDT into a Euro-denominated stablecoin like EURC. Up 13% in dollar value in less than 5 months," Legendary, the pseudonymous host of The Modern Market Show, announced on X. While the demand for euro-pegged stablecoins has increased, their combined market cap remains less than 1% of that of dollar-pegged stablecoins, which boast a cumulative market value of $254.88 billion. EUR/USD has risen from 1.0354 to nearly 1.17, hitting the highest since September 2021. The upswing is characterized by a breakdown in the correlation between the exchange rate and the differential between the Fed and ECB interest rates, as well as a broad-based shift away from the US dollar. The 90-day correlation coefficient between EUR/USD and bitcoin has recently jumped to 0.62, the highest since February 2024, indicating a moderate positive correlation between the two.
