Myrtle Beach police see 50% decrease in crime over past 10 years

Yahoo02-04-2025
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The Myrtle Beach Police Department presented their 2024 year in review on Tuesday in front of the city council.
Some of the accomplishments include decreased calls for service and intelligence-led strategies to prevent and reduce crime. Chief Amy Prock shared that certain crimes they regularly respond to have decreased nearly 50% since 2015.
The crimes that decreased over the past 10 years are homicides, burglaries, and aggravated assaults. Prock says the addition of 248 new city cameras, expanded neighborhood teams, and innovative technology like the ShotSpotter all contribute to the decrease in incidents.
In 2015, the department responded to 4,909 incidents, and in 2024 that number dropped to 2,578 — which is a 47.48% decrease.
'This path is laid and our foot is on the gas, I will tell you that,' Prock said. 'I look at my team and I look at our community. We work together. We may not always get along, and we may not always agree. But I will tell you this — we work hard and we work together and we find a way to make a difference.'
While those statistics provided by the city is certainly good news for Myrtle Beach, the most recent statistics available from the state paint something different.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's 2023 stats for the violent crime rate of about 49 crimes per 1,000 residents was still higher than both the state and national averages.

Democratic Mayors Say Community-Based Strategies Are Driving Crime Down

Democratic mayors in several large U.S. cities say violent crime has declined on their watch and credit a mix of policing and community-based strategies for the trend. In a virtual discussion hosted by the Democratic Mayors Association and the Vera Action Institute last week, mayors from Cleveland, Chicago, Baltimore, and Newark described investments in youth employment, mental health services, and violence interruption programs that they say are making neighborhoods safer. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb said his administration has pursued an 'all of government' approach since taking office nearly three years ago. 'Since I took office nearly three years ago, we've seen a nearly 46 percent reduction in homicides, while investing in law enforcement, we're also investing in non-violence interventions,' Bibb said. 'And the mayors on the call today from Newark, Chicago, and Baltimore… are seeing the same results in their respective city.' Bibb credited the city's Raising Investment in Safety for Everyone Initiative, expansion of technology such as a camera-sharing program and ShotSpotter gunshot detection, and changes to police recruitment and pay. In February, the Major Cities Chiefs Association, an independent law enforcement group representing the police departments of the largest cities in the United States and Canada, issued a report that also showed an across-the-board decline in violent crime in the United States from 2023 to 2024. It also showed that most violent crimes, including homicide, had decreased in Cleveland from 2023 to 2024. However, there were nearly 100 more reported cases of rape in the Ohio city, according to the report.

6-year-old boy killed after being hit by stray bullet in home on Detroit's east side

Detroit police are seeking those involved in a shooting incident after a stray bullet struck a home and fatally wounded a child who was inside. The department is treating the case as a homicide investigation. "Unfortunately, when shots are fired in a residential neighborhood, you don't know where it's going to end," Police Chief Todd Bettison said during a news conference Sunday night from the neighborhood. The shooting happened about 9 p.m. in the area of Anglin Street near Stender Avenue. This happens to be a ShotSpotter area, a gunshot detection system that can alert police to the sound of gunfire. Because of that technology, Bettison said, officers were already en route to investigate the situation when a 911 call was placed regarding the bullet strike to the child. Officers were at the home in about 30 seconds, he said. Officers found shell casings in the area and a lead on a possible vehicle description. It is possible, Bettison said, that other people were injured as a result of the Sunday night shooting. He asked the community to be on the lookout for anyone who appears to have unexplained gunshot wounds and send in any tips they may have on the incident. "Citizens of Detroit do not tolerate this, especially when it comes to babies, young people being shot. So I'm pretty sure the tips will start to flow immediately," Bettison said. Police said a red-colored Jeep may be one of the vehicles involved in the shooting. A $5,000 reward has been posted for information that "moves the investigation forward," a report said.
