SANDAKAN (June 3): Two stilt houses in Kampung Bokara Jambatan 4 were severely damaged after being struck by strong waves early Tuesday morning.
In the 6am incident, nine residents — six adults and three children — fell into the sea when the kitchen of one house collapsed entirely, while a room in the second house gave way to.
All the victims were rescued without sustaining serious injuries.
Karamunting assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin said he was informed of the incident immediately and directed the Karamunting ADUN Task Force Team to rush to the scene. The team, joined by the village chief and the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), assessed the damage and identified the victims' urgent needs.
'We also provided initial assistance to both families as emergency relief,' Hiew said in a statement on Tuesday.
He added that the state Welfare Department had been contacted to expedite further aid, especially with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration approaching.
'We don't want any family to be neglected, especially ahead of the festive season. Any form of assistance that can be delivered quickly will be arranged,' he assured.
Hiew confirmed that both affected families have lodged police reports regarding the incident.
He also urged villagers to stay alert, particularly those living in poorly maintained homes or high-risk areas.

Pahang closes state, eco-forest parks for Aidiladha weekend

KUANTAN: All eco-forest parks and state parks throughout Pahang will be closed to visitors in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations this weekend. The Pahang State Forestry Department (JPNP) announced that all parks under its jurisdiction will be closed from June 7 to 8 (Saturday and Sunday). "All recreational activities, including hiking, will be temporarily suspended during these two days. "However, privately managed eco-forest parks, including those operated by entities appointed by the Pahang government, will remain open," read the statement. JPNP cautioned that the safety of visitors to privately managed parks is the sole responsibility of the respective operators, and the department will not be held liable for any untoward incidents. The department also warned that individuals who fail to comply with the closure notice may face legal action under the National Forestry Act 1984. GRS to discuss election preparation soon - Hajiji

Hajiji and guests inspecting the sacrificial cows handed over to recipients at the Bajau Samah Cultural Centre in Kampung Lok Batik, Tuaran on Thursday. TUARAN (June 5): The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Supreme Council will be meeting soon to chart their direction for the 17th state election (PRN17), said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor. Hajiji said the meeting would discuss on potential partners, seat allocations and other relevant matters. He disclosed this after handing over a contribution of 200 cows for the Hari Raya Aidiladha sacrificial rites at the Sabah Bajau Samah Cultural Centre in Kampung Lok Batik on Thursday. The distribution of the cows was made to representatives of mosques and suraus within the Tuaran parliamentary constituency, as well as to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), state and district agencies. When asked to comment on the recent statement by Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin that Umno Sabah would only consider cooperation with GRS after the PRN17, Hajiji, who is also GRS chairman, responded that it was Bung's personal view. 'GRS has not made any decisions yet,' he said. Hajiji said the act of qurban (sacrifice) was not only a symbol of obedience to Allah SWT, but also a powerful way to strengthen unity and compassion within the Muslim community. 'The ibadah qurban carries a profound message in fostering unity and mutual support among Muslims. Hari Raya Aidiladha is not merely a celebration, but a time to reflect on the values of sacrifice, sincerity and social concern,' he said. Also present at the event were Minister of Rural Development Datuk Jahid Jahim, Pantai Dalit assemblyman Datuk Jasnih Daya and senior officials from both state and federal departments.

Hourly update on water levels at UMS' tank

Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 Text Size: Shahelmey explained that discrepancies in reports arose when student leaders accused the department of making false claims. Kota Kinabalu: The State Water Department will now provide an hourly update on water levels at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah's R13 tank, said Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. He said the move aims to help UMS manage its pumping schedule more effectively and ensure better water distribution on campus. 'A new water level indicator has been ordered and should be installed within one or two weeks. I will revisit UMS once that is completed to ensure smooth coordination between both parties,' he told reporters after distributing fresh beef from 30 cows to the needy in Putatan, in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha, Tuesday. He was responding to UMS Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur's strong criticism of the Water Department's May 29 statement, which claimed the university had always received sufficient water and that internal technical issues were to blame for any disruptions. Shahelmey said the department's records showed consistent supply since May 19. However, he explained that from May 14 to 19, one of UMS' pumps was down, possibly affecting water delivery to the campus. 'That issue has since been resolved. This coordination is especially crucial as students are sitting for their exams in June,' the State Works Minister added. Shahelmey explained that discrepancies in reports arose when student leaders accused the department of making false claims. Site inspections two weeks ago revealed that while the department recorded sufficient water levels in the R13 tank, UMS reported otherwise, due to a faulty tank indicator that led to miscommunication. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
