
NASA Aircraft Set to Perform Wild Low-Altitude Stunts Around These U.S. Cities
The two research aircraft, named P-3 Orion (N426NA) and a King Air B200 (N46L), are set to fly over Baltimore, Philadelphia, the Virginia cities of Hampton, Hopewell, and Richmond, in addition to the Los Angeles Basin, Salton Sea, and Central Valley, according to NASA. The flights will take place along the eastern coast between Sunday, June 22 and Thursday, June 26, and in California between Sunday, June 29 to Wednesday, July 2.
It'll be a good opportunity to catch the two planes as they will fly at lower altitudes than most commercial flights, while pulling off specialized maneuvers like vertical spirals between 1,000 and 10,000 feet (304 to 3,048 meters), circling above power plants, landfills, and urban areas. The planes will also make missed approaches at local airports and low-altitude flybys along runways to collect air samples near the surface.
The P-3, operated out of NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, is a four-engine turboprop aircraft, carrying six science instruments. The King Air B200 is a twin-engine aircraft owned by Dynamic Aviation and contracted by NASA. The aircraft will carry out 40 hours of data collection for NASA's Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) on each U.S. coast.
SARP is an eight-week summer internship program at NASA that provides undergraduate students with hands-on experience in various scientific areas. The low-altitude flights will be used to gather atmospheric data through the on board science instruments, which will be operated by the students.
'Despite SARP being a learning experience for both the students and mentors alike, our P-3 is being flown and performing maneuvers in some of most complex and restricted airspace in the country,' Brian Bernth, chief of flight operations at NASA Wallops, said in a statement. 'Tight coordination and crew resource management is needed to ensure that these flights are executed with precision but also safely.'
NASA uses low altitude flights for Earth science, gathering high-resolution data that satellites can't capture at the same level of detail. These flights have typically supported research on climate change, natural disasters, and atmospheric science. The upcoming flights will take place near populated areas, so there will be plenty of chances to see the aircraft flying overhead.

NASA Telescope Spots a Previously Unknown Moon of Uranus
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has found a previously unknown moon orbiting Uranus. NASA announced the discovery on Tuesday, adding that the moon was first spotted on Feb. 2. Scientists estimate that the newly discovered moon is about six miles in diameter. Its 'tiny' size is likely why other telescopes—and the Voyager 2 spacecraft that conducted a flyby nearly four decades ago—hadn't caught sight of it before, according to NASA. By comparison, Earth's Moon has a mean diameter of more than 2,000 miles, and Uranus' largest moon, Titania, has a diameter of roughly 1,000 miles. 'It's a small moon but a significant discovery,' Maryame El Moutamid, a lead scientist in the Southwest Research Institute's Solar System Science and Exploration Division, said in NASA's announcement. Before this discovery, Uranus—the seventh planet from the Sun—was known to have 28 moons. The planet's moons have often been dubbed the 'literary moons' because they're all named after characters from works by William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. The planet has five major moons: Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. The new moon, which brings Uranus' total number of known moons to 29, is currently designated at S/2025 U1 but doesn't have an official name yet. A name will need to be approved by the International Astronomical Union, which is responsible for naming and designating astronomical objects, according to NASA. The space agency added that the discovery hasn't yet gone through the peer-review process. Before this year, the most recently discovered moon, designated at S/2023 U1, was sighted in November 2023. Matthew Tiscareno, a member of the research team who is part of the SETI Institute, said in NASA's announcement that the latest discovery makes 'it likely that even more complexity remains to be discovered' when it comes to the moons orbiting Uranus. 'There's probably a lot more of them and we just need to keep looking,' Tiscareno told The Associated Press.

NASA pilot program to use citizen science to improve hurricane response
A National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) pilot program will utilize citizen science to help expedite hurricane disaster recovery. The space agency -- along with the Globe Program, a global science and education program -- is spearheading its new Response Mapper program, which will use before-and-after photos submitted by the public to track conditions on the ground. Through the summer and fall, NASA is inviting the public to participate in the program, especially for those who live in the Southeast, where many tropical cyclones can have an impact. "Your contributions could ultimately help emergency managers make faster and better-informed decisions when it matters most and strengthen your community's ability to respond and recover from disasters," NASA said. The time-stamped and geotagged images will be shared with emergency responders, in addition to data from satellites and field reports, according to NASA. "NASA Response Mappers is a great opportunity to take action and support emergency response efforts before a storm even strikes," Rebecca Lewis, co-director of the GLOBE Implementation Office, told ABC News. "NASA provides crucial data to emergency responders during disasters such as hurricanes, flooding, and fires." Disaster response teams often face challenges when obtaining "clear, localized" information, especially in rural areas, NASA said. Satellite imagery offers a wide-area view of hazards but may miss short-lived impacts due to factors such as cloud cover, orbit timing or data processing delays. Satellites can also miss finer details that photos taken closer to the ground could encapsulate. "We're exploring how citizen science can support disaster response in ways that Earth observation data alone can't," said Kristen Okorn, a coordinator for NASA's Disasters Response Coordination System, in a statement. "A single photo of land cover, whether it is a flooded street, fallen trees or even an undamaged area, can offer helpful context." But when combined with other observations, citizen-submitted photos can help verify conditions on the ground and fill any blind spots, Okorn said. A photo showing debris that fell after a storm could help first responders determine where to send cleanup crews, while a photo of cropland can help NASA inform state and federal agencies that are trying to ascertain any potential crop losses, according to NASA. "Citizen science gives us ground truth,' said Joshua Barnes, manager for NASA's Disasters Response Coordination System, in a statement. "The more eyes on the ground, the better we can serve communities in need." Citizens can share photos by downloading the GLOBE Observer app on their smartphone and joining the NASA Response Mappers team. Users can then use the app to take land cover photos of the same location over time, "ideally" once a week or month, according to NASA. The project is "especially great" for community members curious about science and their environment; amateur storm watchers or nature photographers and those who want to support disaster resilience. However, citizen scientists are reminded to stay safe and never take photos during dangerous conditions. "Watch your data make a difference through maps and updates from the NASA Response Mappers team," NASA said. The program is expected to improve data that directly supports hurricane disaster response efforts. It will also empower people to take action to help their communities before a potential storm hits. The program will run through Oct. 31. "At the end of the season, we hope to tell a story that begins with everyday people helping NASA deliver life-saving insights," Barnes said. "And it can all start with a photo."

Toxic algae is threatening a pond on Martha's Vineyard. A new tool could change that.
A beloved pond on Martha's Vineyard is being choked by toxic algae, but a new piece of technology could help save it. Every year tens of thousands of people flock to Martha's Vineyard for the sun, the sand and the scenery. But in order to keep this special sanctuary safe, unique solutions are needed to fight our changing climate. High above the southern part of the Massachusetts island, the Atlantic Ocean collides with the shore. Just beyond that sits 200 acres of brackish water that makes up Chilmark Pond. It looks inviting, but a danger lurks in these waters. Over the last several years, toxic blooms of cyanobacteria have taken over. Arnie Spevack and Sharon Siegel live on Chilmark Pond. They remember a time when the pond was a place for play, a passageway to the beach, and the wonders of summer. "Martha's Vineyard generally is just paradise," Arnie Speevak said. "My grandchildren used to swim in this pond. And they can't anymore," added Sharon Seagull. Cyanobacteria, sometimes called blue-green algae, are microscopic organisms that thrive in warm, nutrient-rich water. They feed on nitrogen and phosphorus. In summer, they can multiply fast enough to choke a pond and produce toxins that can make people and pets sick. "This pond is really delicate," Emily Reddington said. Reddington leads the Great Pond Foundation. She said the challenge was finding a fix that wouldn't hurt the ecosystem they're trying to save. They turned to the LG Sonic MPC-Buoy, a solar-powered piece of technology that they hope can save Chilmark Pond. "Instead of adding a chemical or disturbing the environment, it uses sonic pulses targeting specifically cyanobacteria to keep from growing out of control or blooming," Reddington said. Every 30 minutes, the device checks the water's vital signs and sends out sound waves that block algae from the sunlight it needs to grow. Without it, the blooms can surface, spread and release dangerous toxins. The buoy is treating the symptoms — the blooms you can see. But to find the source of the problem, you have to look beneath the surface, into the soil and aging septic systems around the pond. The issue is not specific to Chilmark Pond, Martha's Vineyard, or even Massachusetts. It's a worldwide issue. "100 percent, this is a global challenge that we're having to deal with across the world. Temperatures are increasing, precipitation is changing, and pressures on the environment are increasing over time," Reddington said. At any given time, dozens of cities and towns in Massachusetts have closed beaches because of cyanobacteria. And it's not just small bodies of water, for example, these algae blooms are also a common occurrence in three of the Great Lakes - Erie, Michigan, and Superior. That's why Reddington's team heads out daily to gather water for testing. "The more data the better," Reddington said. Once the water's back at the Vineyard Haven Lab, it's analyzed sample by sample. "This machine is telling us specifically what phytoplankton or what combination of phytoplankton is growing and giving the water that hue," Owen Porterfield said. "What we are registering is a moderate to high concentration of cyanobacteria." All this data goes straight to the Board of Health, the people who make the call on public safety "The signs were ready to go. The maps went up the same day, and we kind of have a weekly workflow, but if it's a bloom, those are posted the same day," Reddington said. Back on the pond, those who live along the water like the president of Chilmark Pond Association Amy Salzman, say the new sonic buoy is bringing a new sense of hope. "If it works, it could be a game changer for the island, for the Cape," Salzman said. She believes people and nature share a symbiotic relationship and losing something like the pond to climate change would be unimaginable. "We've gotten so enclosed in our urban world and one of the most important things we can do for nature is to get people out in it," Salzman said. "And restoring this pond is such an opportunity to reconnect people to it."
