India ready to sign deals that protect its interests, says Piyush Goyal

India is negotiating trade agreements with countries on its own terms, and 'national interest will always be supreme', Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal asserted on Friday, even as the country's trade negotiators returned from Washington after extensive nearly week-long parleys with their US counterparts in a bid to seal an interim bilateral trade deal.
An official team led by India's chief negotiator, Department of Commerce Special Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, was in the US from June 27, and had extended its stay till Thursday to resolve key issues of contention between the two countries.
However, India hasn't signalled the finalisation of an interim deal yet, and the 90-day pause on US' reciprocal tariffs expires on July 9. If an agreement is not firmed up by then, Indian exports to the US could be laden with a 26 per cent duty as per US President Donald Trump's country-specific reciprocal tariff plan unveiled on April 2.
India is pushing hard to avoid the reciprocal tariff levies, while securing lower tariffs for labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather and automobile components. Washington has signalled that there is unlikely to be any relief on the additional tariffs on steel and aluminium products, a government source said. The US had imposed a 25 per cent import duty on steel and aluminium products in March, which was doubled to 50 per cent in June.
'Negotiations are not contingent on any date… Our interest is that we should get a sustained preference over other competing countries in areas of our interest. If we get that, we will be happy to do a deal,' the official source said.
During the latest round of talks, the Indian side is learnt to have hardened its stance on issues related to the 'sensitive' agriculture sector and reiterated, as it had earlier, that agriculture and dairy remain major 'red lines' for India's trade negotiations with the US.
Earlier this week, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said: 'There will have to be a give and take. Just like the US or people in the US may have views about India, people in India have views about the US too. We'll have to find a kind of meeting ground. I believe it's possible.'
On the other hand, officials from the US administration, including President Trump, have been saying over the past few days that a trade deal with India will be finalised soon.

JP Nadda condemns assault on NHAI men by minister: ‘alarming, unprecedented'

BJP national president and Union minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Saturday criticised Himachal Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh for allegedly thrashing two NHAI officials in Shimla a few days ago and said, 'What would happen to people when those supposed to protect the law take matters into their own hands?' Addressing the media in Bilaspur, Nadda dubbed the incident 'alarming and unprecedented' for a peaceful state like Himachal, which is known as 'Dev Bhoomi (land of the gods)', and expressed concern over 'the deteriorating law and order'. 'It is a worrisome incident. This incident has two aspects. First: it hurts the Dev Bhoomi culture of our land; and the second: the government, which job is to protect, has become predators…what would happen to people when those supposed to protect the law take matters into their own hands…it shows what kind of government is running in the state,' Nadda said. On Monday, an FIR was registered against the Himachal minister for allegedly assaulting NHAI officials — manager Achal Jindal and site engineer Yogesh Verma. Nadda announced that work on 25 national highways, spanning 2,592 kilometres, was underway across Himachal. 'Of these, 785 km are being constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), 1,238 km by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and 569 km by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO),' he said, expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for approving and supporting these major infrastructure initiatives. Nadda highlighted four key infrastructure projects under the NHAI, most of which are expected to be completed by 2026-27, with the remaining scheduled for completion by 2028. Barring the Shimla-Motor National Highway for which preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) is underway and completion is slated for 2028, the Parwanoo-Shimla, Kiratpur-Manali and Pathankot-Mandi National Highways would be completed in 2026 and 2027, he said. Nadda said he would write to the chief minister and also hold discussions with him on two important matters, including the exclusion of highway construction equipment from the industrial category. Nadda said temporary construction setups like crushers, hot mixers, and bitumen heating units, used in NHAI projects, should be exempted from requiring annual NOCs from the State Pollution Control Board. 'These temporary installations,' he said, 'are slowing down progress due to bureaucratic delays,' Nadda stressed the urgent need for a decision on dredging in the Beas river region.

Patchy summer, shifting demand: Dabur, Marico, Godrej likely saw diverging fortunes in Q1 sales

New Delhi: Consumer goods makers Dabur India Ltd, Marico Ltd, and Godrej Consumer Products Ltd are expected to report contrasting demand patterns for their products in the June quarter, with robust sales in edible oils and home and personal care categories offset by a subdued summer for beverages. This divergence is largely attributed to untimely rains and a milder summer, hurting demand for seasonal categories. On Friday, homegrown consumer goods company Dabur India said that the Indian FMCG sector saw a sequential recovery in demand in the June quarter, with an uptick in volume growth particularly in urban markets. Dabur's home and personal care (HPC) division is expected to perform well, driven by its oral, home and skin care categories. The beverage portfolio was impacted due to unseasonal rains and a brief summer. On account of decline in beverages, Dabur's consolidated revenue is expected to grow in low single digits. Consolidated operating profit growth is expected to marginally lag revenue growth. The company sells brands such as Dabur Red toothpaste, Dabur Honey, Hajmola, and Dabur Honitus. Volume growth Godrej Consumer Products said that its standalone business is likely to deliver high-single digit value growth in the first quarter of the ongoing fiscal year on the back of mid-single digit underlying volume growth (UVG). At a consolidated level, we expect double-digit revenue growth on the back of high-single digit underlying volume growth. Underlying volume growth is a key business metric, particularly in consumer goods sector, that measures the actual increase in the number of goods sold. It focuses only on volume, without taking into consideration price changes. Volume growth has been strongly competitive and is sequentially improving, the company said in its quarterly update on Friday. Standalone Ebitda margin in Q1FY26 is likely to be below its normative range but is expected to improve, the company added. While palm oil prices have started easing towards the end of June, benefits of this moderation will only be realized in H2FY26, the company added in its quarterly update to the exchanges. The company's home care business has had a broad-based growth trajectory with the business likely to deliver double-digit value growth and UVG increase. Personal care business is expected to grow value in low-single digit impacted by soaps. Standalone business excluding soaps (which is seeing a price-volume rebalancing driven by commodity volatility) is expected to deliver a very strong performance this quarter with double-digit UVG. Edible oil maker Marico on Thursday said its India business is expected to report 'multi-quarter high" volume growth in Q1, benefiting from import duty reduction on vegetable oils. 'During the quarter, the sector exhibited consistent demand patterns, marked by improving trends in rural markets and steady urban sentiment. We expect gradual improvement in the quarters ahead, supported by easing inflation, a favourable monsoon season and policy stimulus," Marico said in its update for the June quarter released Thursday evening. The company's underlying volume growth in the India business continued to improve sequentially to reach a multi-quarter high. Marico's consolidated revenue growth on a year-on-year basis stood in the low twenties, marking a strong start towards delivering double-digit growth on a full-year basis. Its leading edible oil brand Saffola posted a healthy performance with revenue growth in the high twenties, backed by mid-single digit volume growth. The brand has 'proactively" passed on the benefit of the recent import duty reduction on vegetable oils to consumers. Meanwhile, its Parachute oil portfolio reported marginal dip in volumes due to high input cost and pricing conditions, it said in its update. In June this year, the Centre reduced the basic customs duty (BCD) on crude edible oils—crude sunflower, soybean, and palm oils from 20% to 10%. This decision came after the sharp rise in edible oil prices following last year's import tax hike in September. The increase led to significant inflationary pressure on consumers, with retail edible oil prices soaring and contributing to rising food inflation. Marico reported continued inflation in copra prices due to unseasonal rains, while vegetable oil prices dropped after import duty cuts, and crude oil derivatives stayed stable. Consequently, the company expects increased pressure on gross margins in the short term, but expects this to ease from the second half of the fiscal year. Analysts said monthly and quarterly inflationary trends remained 'benign" for consumer staple companies, except for copra and tea prices, suggesting a gradual uptick in demand as well as easing of pressure on gross margins. Month-on-month and quarter-on-quarter inflationary trends suggest a benign environment for Marico's raw material basket except for brent crude (up 12.2% month-on-month but still down 20.2% year-on-year) and copra (up 24.1%—18.7% quarter-on-quarter—month-on-month in 1QFY26 leading to over 90% inflation year-on-year), analysts at Yes Securities said in a report released on 2 July. The brokerage said its internal consumer staples raw material inflation index reported an uptick in May 2025, up 3.4% year-on-year, led by oil seeds (including copra) and menthol, despite lower crude prices. 'Even while geopolitical tensions lifted palm oil on a month-on-month basis, both palm oil and PFAD (palm fatty acid distillate) are still down quarter-on-quarter. Agri inputs were mixed, with quarter-on-quarter softening in wheat, maize and cocoa, but copra and tea prices remain firm. Tobacco leaf prices are under pressure due to oversupply but the government is intervening," it added. The fast-moving consumer goods industry reported an 11% year-on-year value growth in the March quarter, driven by a 5.1% volume increase and a 5.6% price hike, according to NielsenIQ. While overall inflation is easing, high edible oil prices kept the basket of staples expensive, resulting in higher value growth. However, edible oil prices are now stabilizing. Most companies have pointed to a recovery in demand in the second half of the year, led by favourable monsoons and tax benefits announced in this year's budget that raised exemption limit and revised personal income tax slabs. 'A meaningful and broad-based margin recovery appears more likely from 2HFY26, contingent on price stability across commodities and favourable monsoon progress," said analysts at Equirus Securities. Softening wheat, maize, and barley prices support margin stability for food players like Britannia, ITC, and Mrs Bectors Food.

Hyperloop, ropeways on fast track part of Gadkari's mega mobility plan

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for next-generation mass mobility in the country, which includes electric rapid transport, hyperloop in urban areas and ropeways, cable buses and funicular railways in inaccessible terrains. Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari(@BJP4Jharkhand) In an interview with PTI, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways said India's transport sector is undergoing a major transition, with initiatives like tree bank, mobile-based driving tests, and flex-fuel engines by 11 leading automakers in the pipeline. Also on the agenda are plans to upgrade 25,000 km of two-lane highways to four lanes, establish an electric mass rapid transport network across major routes and scale up road construction to 100 km per day. 'We are driving innovation. A revolution in mass mobility is underway,' Gadkari said. 'Work is progressing at a war footing to transform how India travels, with a focus not just on metropolises but also on remote, inaccessible rural areas. We're building ropeways, cable cars and funicular railways across 360 locations, including Kedarnath. Work has already started on 60 of these projects,' he said. Funicular railways are a system that combines elevator and railway technologies to efficiently transport people and goods up and down inclines. These are particularly useful in mountainous or hilly areas. Gadkari said the cost of these projects ranges from ₹200 crore to ₹5,000 crore and once completed, they will change the face of India. The minister added that improved road infrastructure will not only boost the economy but will also help in propelling growth and creating jobs. 'I am more than confident that in a year's time, our highways will match the standard and quality of US roads that I have been emphasising,' he said, adding that days are not far off when metropolises will have cable-run buses, electric rapid mass transport buses with aeroplane-like facilities. Gadkari said pilot projects like Metrino pod taxis, hyperloop systems, and pillar-based mass rapid transport are in the pipeline for cities like Delhi and Bengaluru. 'Technology and investors are both coming in. It will be a revolution,' he said. The minister said, 'Eleven companies, including Tata, Toyota, Hyundai and Mahindra, have agreed to build flex-fuel engine vehicles that will reduce dependence on fuel imports as well as fossil fuel." Flex-fuel vehicles are equipped with internal combustion engines that can operate on more than one fuel. They are primarily meant to run on ethanol and methanol or a blend of biofuels and on conventional fuels such as petrol or diesel. Gadkari said India is working on 25,000 km of road upgrades for converting two-lane roads into four-lanes and 'we plan to build 100 km of roads per day – this is our target, not a declaration,' he clarified. The length of national highways was 91,287 km in 2013-14 and there has been an increase of about 60 per cent in the length of NHs to 1,46,204 km, he said. The length of National High-Speed Corridors (HSC) has expanded from 93 km in 2014 to 2,474 km at present, he said. New technologies, like precast construction, three-ft road barriers, and AI-based road safety tools, including drones and camera monitoring systems, are being introduced to boost efficiency and safety. 'We plan to plant 20–25 crore trees along highways, with an aim to transplant old trees and replant five for every one cut.' Talks for a tree bank are in advanced stages with the Ministry of Environment and once a go-ahead is received, full-fledged work will start, the minister said. Speaking about electric rapid transport, Gadkari said a tender has been floated for a 135-seater electric bus in Nagpur as a pilot project. The bus will feature executive-class seating, air-conditioning, and airline-grade amenities, capable of running at speeds of 120–125 km/hr. It will recharge in 30–40 minutes at designated stops and is expected to cost 30 per cent less than traditional diesel buses while offering significantly lower emissions, he said. 'Once the trial is successful, we plan to introduce similar buses pan-India, including on routes like Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Jaipur, Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Aurangabad and Bangalore-Chennai, among others," he added. As many as 670 roadside amenities have already been approved, aimed at providing world-class facilities for both travellers and drivers across national highways, he said. The minister said India's transport sector contributes nearly 40 per cent to the country's air pollution, and emphasised that green mobility initiatives will not only help curb emissions but also significantly reduce the nation's annual fuel import bill of around ₹22 lakh crore. He further claimed that improved road infrastructure will help bring down logistics costs from 14 per cent of GDP to 9 per cent by the end of the year, enhancing overall economic efficiency.
