IND vs ENG 4th Test: Ricky Ponting shares what would be England's plan on Day 3 against India

India were on the back foot at the end of Day 2 in the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting didn't hold back in his criticism of the visitors' bowling performance.
Speaking on Sky Sports Cricket ahead of Day 3, Ponting tore into India's lack of bite with the ball on a day when England's openers put on a commanding 166-run stand.
"Now, just thinking about these batting conditions today. I mean, England definitely got the better of it yesterday, and we could see from the morning session to the afternoon just how much the wicket and conditions changed. So, batting conditions probably won't get any better than they are right now," said Ponting on what India can expect on Friday.
"We've got two class players at the crease. India need to find a way early today to get themselves back into this game. If they don't take early wickets today, this game is slipping away really, really quickly," he warned.
"On a wicket with this sunshine on it today, we saw Jadeja turn a couple late yesterday afternoon. It's not going to get easy to bat on late in this game. So England, I'm sure, would have gone to bed last night thinking about the possibility of only batting once in this Test match.
They'll want to bat long today, get through the day, get a huge first innings total."
"Not the best thing to listen to if you're an Indian fan, but the fact is that it is very true to what could happen," said the former Australia skipper.
India were bowled out for 358 earlier in the day despite a brave effort from Rishabh Pant, who walked in with a fractured toe to score 54 off 75 balls. The wicketkeeper-batter had retired hurt on Day 1 but returned to a standing ovation, adding crucial runs in the lower order.
England responded aggressively, reaching 225/2 at stumps in just 46 overs. Openers Ben Duckett (94) and Zak Crawley (84) led the charge before Ravindra Jadeja and debutant Anshul Kamboj finally provided breakthroughs.
With Ollie Pope (20*) and Joe Root (11*) unbeaten at the crease, England trailed India by just 133 runs and looked well set to dictate the Test heading into Day 3.

Akash Deep breaks silence on what he told Ben Duckett during controversial send-off: 'He said I won't get him out'

Exactly one week after the intense send-off incident at The Oval, India pacer Akash Deep has finally broken his silence, shedding light on what truly transpired between him and England opener Ben Duckett. The incident took place during Day 4 of the fifth and final Test of the series, when the pacer dismissed Duckett and proceeded to wrap his arms around the batter as the latter walked off the field. Akash Deep appeared to tell something to Duckett, who remarkably maintained his calm and didn't react to the pacer. Akash Deep gave a send-off to Ben Duckett in the fifth Test(X) There were hostilities between the two before the send-off, too, with the duo exchanging words between deliveries. The Indian bowler has revealed that Duckett had told Akash Deep he wouldn't be able to get him out; it seemed the remark riled the Indian bowler up, particularly given his good record against Duckett. 'I have a good record against Duckett and have got him out a few times,' Akash Deep told Revsportz. 'I have always fancied my chances against the left-handers, and he is no different. On that day, he was trying to throw me off my line and length and had played a number of unconventional shots. That's when he said to me that it was his day and I will not be able to get him out." Akash Deep acknowledged that Duckett's tactics initially made bowling to him challenging, but he was fired up once he finally got the breakthrough. 'The truth is, if a batter moves around the pitch and plays these shots, your line and length does get impacted, for you don't really know what he will do next. That's what was happening. Also, England were off to a quick start and we needed a wicket. We were defending a modest score and wickets were critical. When I got him out (smiles), I said to him: 'You miss, I hit. Not always will you win. This time, I win'. It was a continuation of what he was saying to me, and it was all done in good spirit,' said the bowler. A series full of on-field tensions The clash between Akash Deep and Ben Duckett was far from an isolated incident. Tensions had been simmering since the Lord's Test, ignited by Zak Crawley's deliberate time-wasting on the final moments of Day 3. This tactic deeply frustrated the Indian camp, especially Shubman Gill, sparking a fierce rivalry between the two sides. The hostility only intensified through the fourth Test and spilt beyond the boundary before the fifth with a heated confrontation between India's head coach Gautam Gambhir and groundsman Lee Curtis.

"I Was Disappointed At...": Karun Nair Breaks Silence On Ups And Downs On England Tour

Coming back to the Indian team after a gap of 8 years, Karun Nair earned the much-deserved 'second chance' on the tour of England, but his performances didn't quite reflect the hunger he had shown to make a comeback to the Test team. Nair only scored one half-century on the tour, that too in the first innings of the final Test of the series, before producing another insipid show in the second innings. With the series now over, uncertainties of another chance are understandably looming over his Test future. The veteran batter himself admitted that he should've converted the half-century at the Oval into a hundred but was disappointed to not do so. "I was disappointed at not being able to convert the start at The Oval into a century," he said in a chat with ESPNCricinfo. "But looking back, it was quite important to grind my way on that first day with the team in a tricky position. I'd done well there previously; I'd gotten a 150 for Northants against Surrey. The nerves were there, but I was feeling good. I was hoping to convert, which I couldn't.". The series concluded 2-2, with nothing separating the two teams in an extremely closely-fought 5-match series. While Nair continued to search for an absolute high on a personal level, he has plenty to reflect on, now that the assignment has ended. "It was an up-and-down series in that sense, and I did reflect a lot. But it's also important to let go of what has happened and look forward to what I need to do in the next few months. It's about keeping my focus levels up and making sure I go on and make big scores, irrespective of the level I'm playing at," he added. Nair's focus is now shifting to the Maharaja Trophy T20, where he'll look to do his best as the Mysore Warriors look to defend their title.
