ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Region's two main Islamic opposition parties said on Thursday that Erbil province authorities rejected their request to hold a mass rally in support of Gaza.
The Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) and the Kurdistan Justice Group (Komal) stated in a joint statement on Wednesday that they had plans to hold a rally on Saturday, in solidarity with Gaza in front of Erbil's Shanidar Park, near the city's historic citadel.
'We will hold a mass rally to support the Gaza Strip against the genocide they are facing,' read a joint statement by the two parties.
However, on Thursday, the two parties said that their representatives had approached the Erbil provincial office to request 'authorization [to hold the rally] and security coverage for our rally from the relevant authorities,' but their request was denied.
Speaking to Rudaw on condition of anonymity, a senior source from Erbil's provincial office said on Thursday that other groups had also submitted requests to hold rallies in support of Gaza. However, all such requests have been turned down because 'such a rally in Erbil is deemed unnecessary.'
Komal and the KIU had stated on Wednesday, 'As always, as a religious and humanitarian duty, we strongly condemn the crimes against humanity committed by the occupier [Israeli] army, in a flagrant violation of all heavenly and humanitarian laws and norms.'
'We urge international organizations to put an end to these [Israeli] crimes,' they added.
In October 2023, the Palestinian movement Hamas launched a large-scale incursion into southern Israel, killing more than 1,170 people, according to Israeli figures. Israel responded with a massive offensive in Gaza that killed 50,000 people, mostly Palestinian civilians, according to the Gaza health ministry.
Following 15 months of war, Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire which went into effect in mid-January. However, on March 18, Israel launched new attacks on Gaza, killing more than 1400 Palestinians and injuring more than 2500 others, according to the Gaza health ministry. Israel says the offensive aims to secure the return of 59 hostages still held by Hamas.
In the Kurdistan Region, humanitarian efforts in support of Gaza have continued.
Haji Karwan, a former member of the KIU and head of the Erbil-based Bextewery Organization, told Rudaw's Nwenar Fatih in early April that his organization has sent $5 million in aid to Gaza since the start of the war. The aid, he said, was raised through public donations across the Kurdistan Region.
For its part, the Erbil-based Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) announced in November 2023 that it would send humanitarian aid to Gaza in support of the Palestinian people.
The aid package included 14 tons of medicine and medical supplies, 2,500 food parcels, 200 boxes of hygiene products, and 400 large cartons of clothes. BCF President Musa Ahmad said his foundation coordinated with Palestinian officials and partner organizations to deliver the aid.

Iran dismantles ISIS-linked operatives in Tehran
Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, Iran arrested members of an ISIS-affiliated network in the capital, Tehran, according to the General Command of the Internal Security Forces Saeed Montazer-ol-Mahdi. Ol-Mahdi noted that the arrests were made following 'extensive and complex operations' in recent days by the counterterrorism unit across Tehran and the provinces of Isfahan, Qom, and Alborz, adding that the network was preparing to carry out sabotage and bombing attacks during recent public ceremonies. 'All members of the terrorist network were arrested during the operation, including 13 individuals—among them the ringleader, support teams, and suicide bombers. Explosive devices, including suicide vests, were also seized.' The command added that further details about the dismantled network would be disclosed in the coming days. Iran has also reported multiple foiled plots involving sabotage and suicide bombings. In January 2024, ISIS-K, the Afghan affiliate of the Islamic State, claimed responsibility for two bombings in Kerman that killed at least 95 people during a memorial for Qassem Soleimani. The attack was one of the deadliest in Iran in recent years. Earlier, in June 2017, a coordinated assault on the Iranian parliament and the Khomeini mausoleum left 17 people dead and marked the first major ISIS-claimed operation inside the country.

KRG on salary crisis: International support needed
Shafaq News/ The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Wednesday strongly criticized the Iraqi Ministry of Finance's decision to halt funding for public sector salaries, calling it 'unconstitutional, unlawful, and a form of collective punishment.' During its weekly session, chaired by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the Council of Ministers affirmed that the Region had fulfilled all its obligations and submitted the required financial data transparently to the joint audit committee of both federal and regional oversight bodies. Prime Minister Barzani pointed to the 2025 agreement between the federal and regional finance ministries, which ensures the disbursement of full monthly salaries throughout the year. He also referenced a Federal Supreme Court ruling that disputes over the federal budget law must not be used to justify suspending salary payments, emphasizing the constitutional principle of equal treatment for all Iraqi citizens. The Council described the recent federal decision as politically driven and warned against any suspension of salary payments in the coming months, stating that such measures unfairly target the population of the Kurdistan Region. The KRG resolved to formally brief the international community and diplomatic representatives on the legal, constitutional, and financial aspects of the issue, urging support for a resolution within the framework of Iraq's constitution.

Gaza Health Ministry slams Israeli strike on hospital amid rising death toll
Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health in Gaza strongly condemned an Israeli drone strike on the administration building of Shuhada al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, calling it a deliberate attack on the medical system amid rising casualties across the besieged enclave. The ministry warned that targeting medical facilities poses a direct threat to healthcare staff, patients, and the wounded, calling for immediate international protection for Gaza's remaining operational health institutions. It accused Israeli forces of 'systematically dismantling' the already strained health sector and demanded that continued assaults on medical infrastructure be classified as a war crime. The strike came as Gaza endures its 79th consecutive day of Israeli bombardment. At least 32 Palestinians have been killed since dawn in multiple Israeli airstrikes across the Strip. Arab media reports indicated that the deadliest attack occurred in western Khan Younis, where 18 people, including children, were killed after a drone targeted displaced families sheltering inside a school. Separate strikes claimed more lives in Al-Shati refugee camp, Nuseirat, Jabalia, and Abasan town. عاجل| شهداء وجرحى بعد غارة من طيران الاحتلال استهدفت موقعا في مخيم الشاطئ غرب مدينة غزة. — شبكة قدس الإخبارية (@qudsn) June 4, 2025 The ministry reported 97 bodies arriving at Gaza hospitals in the past 24 hours—two of them recovered from under rubble—alongside 440 injuries. It affirmed that rescue teams are unable to reach victims due to ongoing shelling and blocked access. Since October 7, 2023, Israeli operations have killed 54,607 Palestinians and injured 125,341. Already Fragile Health System Long before the war, Gaza's healthcare infrastructure was already under severe strain due to the blockade imposed since 2007. Official statistics indicate just 2,612 hospital beds across the enclave—about 1.2 beds per 1,000 people, far below the global average. The World Health Organization has documented over 686 direct attacks on Gaza's healthcare system since the war began. Based on the latest update from the ministry, 22 of the territory's 38 hospitals are out of service. Reports from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicated that over 80% of health facilities are no longer operational, and at least 70% of ambulances are either destroyed or immobilized due to fuel shortages. The targeting has not only crippled infrastructure but also devastated personnel: 1,581 health workers have been reportedly killed, 1,312 wounded, and 362 detained.
