Carl Dean, Dolly Parton's husband of over 60 years and a man of mystery, dies at age 82

Rarely seen, Carl Dean was the man who stood by Dolly Parton's side as her partner and biggest supporter for 60 years. Parton's husband has died. He was 82.
Dean died today in Nashville, Parton announced on her social media accounts. Dean was a Nashville native, born to Edgar 'Ed' Henry Dean and Virginia "Ginny" Bates Dean. The couple married in 1966 and had no children.
Dean was a private man. So private that many have long wondered if he actually existed. He rarely walked a red carpet, made an appearance at a premiere or attended a show business function. But he did exist, and the deep love and respect he showed his wife was instrumental to Parton's perseverance and success throughout her career, Parton told Knox News in 2024.
'There's always that safety, that security, that strength,' she said of being with Dean. 'He's a good man, and we've had a good life and he's been a good husband.'
Dean never wanted to be in the spotlight. One night at an awards show in 1966 was enough to convince him that the glitz and glam was not for him.
After the event, Dean told his new wife, "I love you, and I will support you in your career any way I can, but I am not going to any more of these wingdings," Parton revealed in her 1994 autobiography, 'Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business.'
From then on, he stayed in the shadows and opted to focus on his own real estate dealings and tended to the couple's Nashville ranch, all while shooing away pesky reporters.
'He never wanted to be part of any of that, never did interviews. (He) would just run like a scalded dog. If somebody said, 'Are you Carl Dean? Can you answer a few questions?' 'No, I don't answer questions,'" Parton told Knox News while imitating Dean.
But Parton shared glimpses of her mysterious husband and their marriage throughout her career, in interviews, on social media and in her music.
"Jolene," one of Parton's signature songs, is partly based on a bank teller who flirted with Dean, according to biograhy.com. She wrote "Just Because I'm a Woman" after Dean expressed disappointment she'd been with other men before they married. Dean is featured on the cover of her album 'My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy' (1969). Dean also was the inspiration behind other songs, including "From Here to the Moon and Back," "Forever Love," "Say Forever You'll Be Mine" and "Tomorrow is Forever."
And to honor the never-ending love and support of her husband, a special section was dedicated to him at the Dolly Parton Experience museum in Dollywood, which opened in 2024.
'He would have never before allowed me to even do that. But I didn't even tell him I'm doing it. I'm just doing it,' Parton told Knox News at the time. 'But I think he deserves his own little spot.'
An 18-year-old Dolly Parton met Carl Dean in 1964 on the very first day she moved to Nashville, eager to start a career in country music. She was leaving the Wishy Washy Laundromat when 21-year-old Dean waved and spoke to her. Their love story began.
"My first thought was 'I'm gonna marry that girl.' My second thought was, 'Lord she's good lookin,'" Dean recalled in 2016 after the couple renewed their vows for their 50th wedding anniversary. 'And that was the day my life began. I wouldn't trade the last 50 years for nothing on this earth."
The couple began dating, but Dean soon enlisted in the military. He served in the National Guard during the Vietnam era for two years, but never went overseas. When he returned to Nashville, Parton's career was just taking off. Because her record label didn't want her married, the couple secretly wed in Ringgold, Georgia, in 1966 to keep their nuptials out of Nashville papers.
The couple remained together since that chance meeting at Wishy Washy Laundromat, privately enjoying each other at home and often taking trips in their RV.
"If I had it to do all over, I'd do it all over again,' Parton wrote in a statement for their 50th anniversary.

South Knoxville losing one of its most popular restaurants amid Sevier Avenue construction

As streetscape construction ramps up, a popular restaurant at the east end of Sevier Avenue is closing after almost a decade in South Knoxville. Landing House owner Zach Land took to Instagram on May 19 to announce the restaurant's closure. June 8 will be the last day open for Landing House, which is uniquely located in a house rather than a typical restaurant space. It's part of the allure for the Chinese and Cambodian-style restaurant near the Sevier Avenue intersection of Island Home Avenue and Foggy Bottom Street, where a roundabout is being built for the streetscape project. Landing House was one of the first spots along the South Knoxville corridor that transformed the street from a desolate, seemingly uninviting stretch into a hotpot for those looking to grab a drink, enjoy a meal and spend the day outside. "Ten years ago, my wife Hao and I saw a 'For Sale' sign on a neat, creepy old house in the neighborhood we lived. Sevier Ave was a desolate place that was honestly … a little sketchy," Land wrote in the Instagram post. "Now that shabby little neighborhood we once knew is completely unrecognizable." Landing House changed that perception, with popular menu items like chicken and shrimp pho, beef filet fried rice and chili crisp noodles making the restaurant stand out as a culinary anchor on Sevier Avenue. The street is now home to a variety of restaurants, bars and breweries, from Redbud Kitchen and Angry Dumplings Tea to Alliance Brewing Company and Hi-Wire Brewing. Balter Beerworks executive chef Hux Jones said in 2023 that Landing House chef Derek Martin was his favorite in Knoxville. "I am so impressed with all the progression he has had with his culinary career," Jones wrote about Martin at the time. "He has really embraced the Asian cuisine with full force." Knox News has also recognized Landing House as one of the best restaurants around town. After A Dopo earned a spot on USA TODAY's Restaurants of the Year list in 2025, Knox News recognized Landing House as one of the restaurants we wish made the list. "We thought it would be great for people to have a place to grab some food to go along with their local craft beers and plowed head first into the insanely scary and hectic world of restaurant ownership," the Instagram post read. Land said in the post it's best to close Landing House "on our own terms than be forced to close in the future." Five months into the 18-month construction period for the $19.2 million city streetscape, Landing House is in a complicated position, with parking made more difficult by the under-construction roundabout and other street work. Streetscape construction is expected to last until summer 2026. "Our business has grown substantially every year we have been open and that is due to your loyal patronage and word of mouth and that means the world to us," Land wrote. "Once again, thank you Knoxville and especially South Knoxville for all your support." Joanna Hayes is the restaurant and retail reporter. Dolly Parton opens Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) – After a year and a half of construction, Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show is now open in Panama City Beach. This is their biggest of Dolly Parton's 3-Pirates Voyage attractions, with seating for more than 1,000 people. Parton says she thought Panama City Beach was the perfect place to open a new location. 'We know this is a great vacation spot and this is a wonderful place to come have supper because kids will be hungry after that, maybe they'll sleep good too after they had a good meal and been entertained,' Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show Founder Dolly Parton said. Pirates Voyage will host up to four shows a day, where performers battle each other on a stage that consists of floating pirate ships. Buccaneer Bay Lagoon is where the action takes place. Pirates from the sapphire and crimson teams battle each other across the stage. They are joined by Captain Blackbeard and Salty the Sea Lion. Visit PCB celebrates Tourism Appreciation Day with Pirates Voyage The shows include audience participation. 'You'll pick your side, and then we'll have competitions to see who is going to win Davy Jones's treasure,' Captain Blackbeard said. And everyone gets involved. 'Even your server, who is bringing you the fabulous four-course feast, gets involved in the show. Still kind of have to watch and see what your server is doing when they're part of Blackbeard's crew,' Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show PR Manager Ellen Liston said. The attraction has already created 300 jobs in the area. Parton says performers come from all over to be a part of the show. 'We literally have folks from all over the country, as a matter of fact, all over the world. And they kind of keep track of people that do these kinds of things. So we're just so proud to have all these great performers, and they are so talented,' Parton added. Pirates Voyage added another show that will start at 8:30 on Thursday night. It is open to the public. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
