Pirates turn it on at Orlando to bid ‘padre' Jose Riveiro farewell in style
They stepped it up in style with a domineering 3-0 Betway Premiership victory in the last match for outgoing coach Jose Riveiro at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night, thanks to goals from Tshegofatso Mabasa in the 16th minute, Bandile Shandu (61st) and Kabelo Dlamini (66th).
Riveiro, who won five cup competitions in three years, has been granted an early release from his contract to join a new club and this was the last time he sat on the bench, with Mandla Ncikazi set to take over their remaining four matches.
The players went out to do their warm-ups wearing T-shirts with messages of appreciation. The fans were not to be outdone as they displayed a huge banner in the west stand screaming: ' Muchas gracias padre Jose Riveiro por siempre una leyenda. '

From Spanish, the banner translated to: 'Thank You father Jose Riveiro, always a legend.'
Riveiro will always have a special place in the hearts of the Buccaneers for bringing stability, trophies, improving players and most importantly giving opportunities to young players.
In this match, Riveiro handed a further debut to captain to Bucs' DStv Diski challenge side Cemran Dansin, 17, who replaced Dlamini in the 75th minute.
It was a good win for second-placed Pirates, but it is almost certain to not have an affect on the title race, which is almost won by Mamelodi Sundowns. The Brazilians need a point from their last two matches — and on form seem highly likely to get at least that against Chippa United at Buffalo City Stadium in East London on Wednesday night (7.30pm) — to be crowned champions for the eighth successive season.

For Arrows, the defeat leaves them in danger as they are second-from-bottom on the standings and may be dragged into the dreaded play-offs at the end of the season.
Riveiro made three changes to the team that lost the Nedbank Cup final 2-1 to Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday with Shandu replacing Deano van Rooyen in defence.
In the middle of the park, Riveiro showed faith in young midfielder Simphiwe Selepe, who replaced Thalente Mbatha, and Dlamini came in for Patrick Maswanganyi.
In attack, Mabasa was preferred for Evidence Makgopa, who scored Bucs' only goal against Chiefs.

Visiting coach Manqoba Mngqithi went with his tried and tested of players like Isima Watenga, Ayanda Jiyane, Velemseni Ndwandwe, Brando Theron and Nduduzo Sibiya.
Pirates opened the scoring when Mabasa found the back of the net from close range after Relebohile Mofokeng dribbled past Theron in the box. Mabasa, not a regular starter this season, ran more than half of the pitch to celebrate with Riveiro and the rest of the technical staff.
Pirates were turning it on and a few minutes later Shandu was unlucky as his shot struck the upright after it deflected off an Arrows defender as the scored remained 1-0.
Arrows responded with attack of their own that ended with Sibiya's shot striking upright with Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine beaten.
Pirates increased their lead when Shandu forced the ball into the net from a tight angle. Dlamini made it 3-0 with a delightful free-kick to effectively end the game as a contest.

Alonso's Real Madrid start La Liga with fresh energy
"Things are going to be different... we are starting from scratch," said Alonso. Real Madrid, featuring several new signings, approach the new season with fresh hope under recently-appointed coach Xabi Alonso, looking to turn the page on a disappointing end to the Carlo Ancelotti era with 'ambitious' football. Former Liverpool and Los Blancos midfielder Alonso saw at the Club World Cup in the United States this summer there is plenty of work to do, as Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Madrid 4-0 in the semi-final. ALSO READ: Spanish coach Riveiro lays down the law for Ahly stars 'Things are going to be different… we are starting from scratch,' said Alonso, although some of his findings from the tournament will undoubtedly influence his approach. Madrid fans also got their first glimpse of the Basque tactician's plans, and also of England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold. Alonso showed tactical flexibility, utilising both a four-man and three-man defence, whereas his predecessor Ancelotti tended to stick with four at the back and was criticised for not being adaptive enough in games. By contrast Alonso was keen to adjust things during matches if he could, including the positioning of his players, and keen to impress on his squad they must all help defensively and with pressing. 'We need and want everyone to defend — the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively,' said Alonso during the tournament, asked specifically about star forwards Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe. 'They have to know how we want to press, and without that, things will be very complicated,' continued Alonso. 'Vini, Jude (Bellingham), Fede (Valverde), Kylian, those up front, the defence has to push forward too.' Alonso is looking to obtain the balance that Ancelotti failed to achieve last season following Mbappe's arrival from PSG. Although the French superstar struck 43 goals under Ancelotti it was not enough to inspire a Madrid side that finished the season without a major trophy, while Barcelona reclaimed La Liga as part of a domestic treble. Mbappe's illness with a stomach bug kept him out of Madrid's group matches at the Club World Cup, but on his first start was in the destruction by PSG. 'We have to be self-critical, but it will also serve us as a guide for where we need to improve,' said Alonso. If Alonso can find the formula for Mbappe and Vinicius to work together without sacrificing too much out of possession remains to be seen, while winger Rodrygo Goes does not appear to be part of the coach's plans, playing a bit-part role in the States. – Goodbyes and new faces – Madrid go into the season without Luka Modric in the squad for the first time in over a decade, with the Croatian's experience and quality a big miss for a side lacking some guile in midfield. Los Blancos' hope is for Turkish playmaker Arda Guler to be able to thrive there and become a player who can control the tempo of a game. 'The coach is trying to make us have more control of the game, and that's better for me,' said Guler. The 20-year-old should get plenty of chances to play at the start of the season with Jude Bellingham sidelined until around mid-October after shoulder surgery to solve a long-running issue. By then new arrival and fellow England international Alexander-Arnold may have established himself in the side. The full-back, who joined from Liverpool before the end of his contract so he could play at the Club World Cup, adds further attacking quality to a Madrid squad brimming with it. Madrid hope Dean Huijsen could help solve some issues at the back, while Alvaro Carreras and Franco Mastantuono also join, with Los Blancos spending over 170 million euros ($200 million) this summer. Dani Carvajal's return from a long-term knee injury is another piece of good news for a Madrid side who need it after their 2024-25 campaign was more noteworthy for the club's attacks on referees than for success on the field. Alonso, who hopes to play an 'ambitious' game with 'emotion and energy', wants the world to be talking about Real Madrid's football once again.

Another undeserved loss for Richards Bay FC
Richards Bay FC supporters pinched themselves when they woke this (Thursday) morning, hoping the 1-0 loss to Lamontville Golden Arrows last night had just been a bad dream. But it was, in fact, real – a nightmare. After again hugely dominating proceedings, firing shots at will against their opponents, the Rich Boyz were simply unable to put the ball into the back of the net. There were at least a dozen clear opportunities, when it looked easier to score than to miss, but not one that mattered. It was the opposite story for Arrows, whose lone second-half chance was well and truly buried by Junior Dion – a magnificent volley from just outside the box that left four defenders and goalkeeper Salim Magoola mere spectators. No stopper in the world would have got near, and ultimately the 82nd minute goal was enough to deny NRB the win they thoroughly deserved. That's two losses in two games in an unlucky start to their Betway Premiership campaign, after losing 2-1 to Marumo Gallants in the season opener. And it won't get easier as they travel to the FNB Stadium on Tuesday to meet Kaizer Chiefs and their thousands of fans. But they have played extremely well thus far, and if Lady Luck changes her fickle mind, this time they could well get the rewards they deserve. Don't have the ZO app? Kaizer Chiefs to release another flop
Kaizer Chiefs are known admirers of Etiosa Ighodaro. To sign the Nigerian forward, they'll offload another international star. Venezuelan midfielder Edson Castillo's time at the club is reportedly up. Can Chiefs get deals done before the window closes? FOUR Chiefs players with uncertain futures Although 31-year-old Venezuelan schemer Edson Castillo started his Chiefs career well, the midfield man has gradually fallen out of favour during his two years at Naturena. The club's pursuit of 24-year-old Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro could hinge on them freeing up a foreign spot in the squad. 'It's been said head coach Nasreddine Nabi could be open to his [Castillo's] potential exit, allowing the club to be more flexible in the market as they look to lure new foreign recruits to bolster the squad for the upcoming season,' the report read on iDiskiTimes.
