Limpopo police nab man with stolen SUV linked to smuggling operation
Members of the Provincial Flying Squad in Limpopo have apprehended a 31-year-old man found in possession of a stolen vehicle.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said that on May 16, while conducting routine patrols, the Limpopo Provincial Flying Squad received a tip-off about a grey Toyota Cross SUV that had been stolen in Pretoria Central, Gauteng, earlier this month.
He stated that the stolen SUV was suspected to be en route to Zimbabwe for smuggling, travelling at high speed along the N1 South.
Police launched a targeted operation and eventually located the vehicle outside Polokwane. When officers tried to stop it, the driver sped off, resulting in a high-speed pursuit.
'A car chase ensued until the vehicle was intercepted at Nirvana robots. It was searched, and police suddenly discovered a damaged tracking device removed from the vehicle.'
Mashaba added that the 31-year-old suspect failed to produce valid documentation proving ownership of the vehicle when stopped by officers.
'He was immediately arrested on the spot for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle,' he confirmed.
Mashaba further stated that the suspect is set to make a formal court appearance at the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on May 19, where the charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle will be formally presented.
'Authorities will seek to ensure that due legal process is followed as the investigation continues, and the court will determine the next steps regarding bail and further proceedings.' He said.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has praised the police for the recovery of the stolen vehicle and urged them to continue in their concerted efforts to deal with cross-border crimes.

Police nab foreign national found with drugs worth R100 000
The Limpopo Provincial Flying Squad has made a breakthrough after arresting a foreign national found with drugs in Mokopane town. The 47-year-old suspect was found with crystal methamphetamine valued at approximately R100 000. The Flying Squad received a tip-off about suspicious drug-dealing activities going on in the area. Upon arrival, the police found the suspect in possession of crystal methamphetamine and arrested him. Additionally, the suspect was found with no valid South African Identity Documentation (ID). The suspect is expected to appear in court before the Mokopane Magistrate's Court on Monday, 9 June 2025, over charges of possession and dealing in drugs and Contravention of the Immigration Act. Three suspects have been arrested after being found in possession of drugs on Friday, 6 June 2025. The suspects were apprehended in different locations. The first suspect, a 21-year-old male, was arrested at his residence in Mosesetjane Village, after police found 155 sachets of Nyaope, 57 sachets of Cat, 31 sachets of Crystal Meth and an undisclosed amount of cash in his bedroom. A 26-year-old male suspect was also arrested at his residence in Danisani Sandsloot Village. He was found with 46 sachets of Crystal Meth and 13 sachets of Nyaope. In Masodi Village, police apprehended a 39-year-old female suspect who was found 5 sachets of Nyaope, 2 sachets of Crystal Meth and an undisclosed amount of cash. All three suspects were detained at Mahwelereng SAPS and are facing charges related to the Contravention of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act and Possession of Prohibited Drugs. They are expected to appear before the Mahwelereng Magistrate's Court on 9 June 2025. ‘Arrested girls lied about their ages': Police say suspects with stolen Toyota Hilux are minors
Police in Limpopo arrested two teenage girls for possession of a stolen Toyota Hilux GD-6 in Limpopo, while a third occupant of the vehicle escaped on foot. Image: File/SAPS Police in Limpopo have established that two suspects who were arrested and charged for possession of a stolen Toyota Hilux bakkie are minors, who must be charged under the Child Justice Act. On Tuesday, IOL reported that provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the two young women who are in police custody were aged 19 and 20. However, on Wednesday night, Mashaba told IOL that after the story was published, parents of the arrested came forward with birth certificates proving that the two are girls aged 15 and 16. 'On the two ladies, further investigation has revealed that they gave incorrect ages during the arrest. After their families saw their pictures on a released media statement, they came forward and the birth certificates show they are minors aged 15 and 16,' said Mashaba. 'They were supposed to be charged under the Child Justice Act. They will now be placed in a place of safety, while they remain in police custody.' Mashaba said the date for the girls to return to court will be announced in due course. 'I'm still waiting for the remand date,' he said. On Monday, IOL reported that the Polokwane Magistrate's Court has remanded 43-year-old Zimbabwean national Mhlalisi Moyo in custody after he was arrested in Limpopo for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
