Limpopo police nab man with stolen SUV linked to smuggling operation
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said that on May 16, while conducting routine patrols, the Limpopo Provincial Flying Squad received a tip-off about a grey Toyota Cross SUV that had been stolen in Pretoria Central, Gauteng, earlier this month.
He stated that the stolen SUV was suspected to be en route to Zimbabwe for smuggling, travelling at high speed along the N1 South.
Police launched a targeted operation and eventually located the vehicle outside Polokwane. When officers tried to stop it, the driver sped off, resulting in a high-speed pursuit.
'A car chase ensued until the vehicle was intercepted at Nirvana robots. It was searched, and police suddenly discovered a damaged tracking device removed from the vehicle.'
Mashaba added that the 31-year-old suspect failed to produce valid documentation proving ownership of the vehicle when stopped by officers.
'He was immediately arrested on the spot for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle,' he confirmed.
Mashaba further stated that the suspect is set to make a formal court appearance at the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on May 19, where the charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle will be formally presented.
'Authorities will seek to ensure that due legal process is followed as the investigation continues, and the court will determine the next steps regarding bail and further proceedings.' He said.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has praised the police for the recovery of the stolen vehicle and urged them to continue in their concerted efforts to deal with cross-border crimes.

Giyani police search for man after girlfriend killed
LIMPOPO – Limpopo police have launched an intensive manhunt for a suspect accused of stabbing and killing his girlfriend in Shawela Village during the early hours of Sunday morning (August 17). At around 01:35, officers responded to a report of a violent incident. On arrival, they discovered the body of a 36-year-old woman inside her home, with multiple stab wounds. Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says that preliminary investigations suggest the victim had been involved in an altercation with her boyfriend, who fled the scene immediately after the attack. The deceased was a resident of Shawela Village, while the suspect is believed to live in Shawela RDP. A case of murder has been opened, with domestic conflict emerging as a possible motive, although investigations are ongoing. Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the killing and ordered that all available resources be deployed to track down the suspect. Police are appealing to community members for assistance. Manhunt launched after motorist shot dead on N1 near Makhado
LIMPOPO – Police have launched an intensive manhunt after a 38-year-old motorist was shot and killed along the N1 South near the Ben Lavin turn-off on Saturday evening (August 16). Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says the victim was travelling with three passengers from Gauteng to Musina when the vehicle broke down at around 19:00. 'While they were awaiting assistance, another car stopped nearby. Two unknown men emerged, pretending to offer help, and asked for the driver of the broken-down car.' 'Once the driver was identified, one of the suspects drew a firearm and fired several shots at him. The other passengers fled in different directions to escape harm. The gunmen then returned to their vehicle and sped away from the scene,' says Mashaba. Emergency services were called, but the victim was declared dead on arrival. His identity has not yet been released, pending further investigation. A murder case has been opened, with the motive still unclear. Police have appealed to the public for information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects.
