Bajirao Peshwa's statue installed at NDA will inspire our future soldiers: Amit Shah
He said that the land of Pune is the birthplace of the ethos of 'Swaraj'. Shah stated that in the 17th century, the voice of 'Swaraj' emerged from Pune, and when the time came for the people to fight for 'Swaraj', against the British, it was Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak Maharaj who was the first to demand it. He added that Veer Savarkar, from the land of Maharashtra, set an example demonstrating how much one person can do for their country in a lifetime.
Amit Shah said that while many statues of Peshwa Bajirao have been installed across the country, the most fitting place for a memorial for him is the National Defense Academy (NDA) in Pune. He noted that the future leaders of India's three armed forces are trained in the academy. Shah added that if our future soldiers draw inspiration from Bajirao Peshwa and learn from his life, no one would dare to challenge India's borders for ages to come.
Union Home Minister said that some of the principles of the art of warfare are timeless and eternal. He stated that strategy, speed, dedication, patriotism, and the spirit of sacrifice are what lead armies to victory in war. Shri Shah noted that Bajirao Peshwa fought 41 battles in a span of 20 years and emerged victorious in all of them. He added that the NDA Academy is the most fitting place for the statue of a brave warrior like Bajirao Peshwa, who never allowed defeat to come near him throughout his life.
Amit Shah said that with his skills, strategy, and the help of brave companions, Bajirao Peshwa turned many lost battles into victories. He stated that Bajirao Peshwa destroyed the symbols of slavery wherever they existed and lit the lamp of freedom in their place.
Shah noted that throughout his 20-year tenure, no one ever saw Bajirao Peshwa dismount from his horse. He added that Bajirao Peshwa undertook the construction of Shaniwarwada, implemented water management systems, and fought against many social evils.
The Home Minister said that some people refer to Bajirao Peshwa as a divinely gifted commander, an invincible warrior, and the greatest disciple of Shivaji, Bajirao Peshwa. He emphasised that Bajirao fought all his battles not for himself but for the nation and 'Swaraj'. Shri Shah concluded that Bajirao Peshwa fought every battle for his motherland, religion, and Swaraj, creating an immortal history that no one will be able to replicate for centuries to come.
He said that in his short lifespan, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, not only established Hindavi Swaraj but also instilled the values of Swaraj in the hearts of the youth. He stated that after Shivaji Maharaj, many individuals carried forward his tradition, ensuring that the flame of Swaraj never gets extinguished. Shri Shah added that if the Peshwas had not continued the fight for independence started by Shivaji Maharaj for 100 years, then the original essence of India would not have been the same as it is today.
Shah said that whenever despair begins to creep into life, the thoughts of young Shivaji Maharaj and Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa come to mind, driving despair far away. He stated that the responsibility of building the India envisioned by Shivaji Maharaj lies with 140 crore Indians. He added that whenever the need arises to preserve Swaraj, our armed forces and leadership will undoubtedly fulfill this duty, with Operation Sindoor being an example of this. Shri Shah said that alongside 'Swaraj', creating a great India was also Chhatrapati's vision--a nation that, by the centenary of independence, stands foremost in every field. He emphasized that there is no better figure in our history than Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa to inspire the effort, dedication, and sacrifice needed to achieve this life goal.
On this occasion, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Shri Eknath Shinde and Shri Ajit Pawar, and Union Minister of State for Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol, along with many other dignitaries, were present. (ANI)

Anti-Maoist Operations Aimed at Enabling Corporate Loot, Violence Must End: Joint Statement
Citizens, tribal rights activists and organisations urged the Union and state government to stop repression and violence in Adivasi areas. Illustration: Pariplab Chakraborty. New Delhi: In a joint statement released on Saturday (July 5), citizens, tribal rights activists and organisations called for an end to the 'repression' and 'violence' in predominantly Adivasi areas across the country, especially in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. More than 40 organisations are signatories to the joint statement, including the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Jharkhand; the National Alliance for Climate and Ecological Justice; the Adivasi Adhikar Manch, Jharkhand; and the National Alliance of People's Movements. Individuals who are signatories include poet and writer Jacinta Kerketta and economist Jean Dreze under the banner of the Jharkhand Janadhikar Mahasabha. Violence and repression in the name of 'eradicating Maoism' have increased in predominantly tribal areas such as Bastar, Chhattisgarh in recent years, the statement said. However, civilians are also killed along with Maoists in these operations. Moreover, the government's attitude is against the peaceful and democratic protests of indigenous communities against displacement, forced mining, forced camp construction and militarisation, the statement said. 'The Adivasis have been fighting against forced land acquisition, eviction from forests and arbitrary mining for decades. They are fighting for a dignified life and constitutional rights. Even then, the widespread violation of PESA, Fifth Schedule, Forest Rights Act and constitutional rights of the Adivasis is increasing,' the statement read. The fifth schedule of the constitution aims to protect tribal autonomy and their rights over land in areas notified as part of this schedule. The districts of Surguja, Bastar, Raigarh and Raipur in Chhattisgarh, for instance, come under the Fifth Schedule. The Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996, meanwhile extended the provisions of gram sabhas or panchayats to the tribal areas of nine states that have Fifth Schedule areas, including Chhattisgarh, in an effort to enable tribal self-governance in these regions. The Forest Rights Act – officially the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 – recognises the rights of tribal and other forest dwellers to their ancestral lands within forested areas and proffers them rights to live on the land, sustainably use forest resources, and protect and conserve these areas. The July 5 statement claimed that the 'real objective' of anti-Maoist operations in states such as Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand is to enable 'corporate loot': 'Big business houses have their eyes on them. The disagreement of the Gram Sabhas, various movements of non cooperation and resistance of the Adivasis, progressive organizations fighting for the poor and the Maoists stand against this loot. And naturally, the government comes forward to protect corporate interests, administratively suppresses these protests.' Though the insurgent Communist Party of India (CPI) (Maoist) has expressed its intent to engage in peace talks, Maoist elimination campaigns still occur. Most recently, security forces killed 31 people – including Maoists and, allegedly, unarmed tribals – in the Karregutta mountain range of Bastar in Chhattisgarh, the statement said. In many of these cases, the dead bodies have not even been handed over to their families, it claimed. 'This shows that in the name of 'eradicating Maoism', the government is set out to destroy the constitution, international laws, humanity and social cultural customs,' the statement said, adding that this was a 'blot on our democracy and constitutional system'. The signatories called on the state and Union governments to put an immediate stop to armed aggression and violence in these areas and implement a 'credible ceasefire'. It also urged that authorities engage with local indigenous communities on their issues, and start a dialogue with the CPI (Maoist). A tribal youth organisation in Bastar, the Moolvasi Bachao Manch, which was fighting against forced camps and displacement, has been banned and its leaders arrested under 'fake charges'. This needs to be undone by withdrawing the charges against its leaders and releasing them, the statement said. It also urged the governments to remove all armed force camps, camps built without the consent of gram sabhas as well as camps setup in schools, apart from ensuring the proper implementation of laws such as the PESA, the fifth schedule and Forest Rights Act in these areas. The Monumento al General San Martin is an imposing equestrian monument honouring Jose de San Martin, the revered liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru. PM Modi's visit to the memorial underscores India's respect for global freedom fighters and shared values of liberty and sovereignty. Modi landed at Ezeiza International Airport earlier on Friday and is on an official visit at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Argentina, Javier Milei. His itinerary includes holding bilateral talks with Milei to review ongoing cooperation and explore ways to deepen the India-Argentina partnership in key sectors such as defence, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade and investment, and people-to-people ties. Following his arrival, the Prime Minister was warmly received by members of the Indian diaspora outside his hotel. Former Vice President Krishan Kant's grandson Virat Kant joins BJP
ANI 05 Jul 2025, 20:39 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): Virat Kant, the grandson of former Vice President late Krishan Kant, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday in Delhi. He was welcomed into the party in the presence of BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh and Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar. As Virat Kant joined the BJP, Tarun Chugh said, 'This is a masterstroke. His late grandfather, Krishan Kant, had contributed to the independence movement. He was also the Vice President of India. Now, his grandson joining the BJP is a big milestone. The member of the Kant family will help strengthen the party.' Krishan Kant passed away at the age of 75 after suffering a heart attack in his office in July 2002. Kant was admitted to AIIMS, New Delhi and was declared dead after an hour after suffering a heart attack. He remains the only Indian vice president to have died in office. Then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee paid tribute to Kant's contributions to the freedom movement and his strong opposition to the Emergency, calling his death 'the end of an era.'
