Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The region's premier B2B gaming conference GameExpo Summit 2025 returns to Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), Zabeel Hall 1 on 7 and 8 May, bringing together global leaders, investors, and innovators to the heart of MENA's fast-growing gaming economy. Powered by Pocket Gamer Connects in partnership with the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), the conference is part of the fourth edition of the citywide Dubai Esports and Games Festival (DEF) 2025, organised by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE).
The annual conference is set to welcome more than 1,500 industry professionals from around the world, making it an ideal platform for businesses to connect with global developers, publishers, distributors, tool providers, and investors. Launching for the first time at GameExpo Summit main stage, the Investment Summit explores current and emerging investment trends within the gaming sector. Running for the afternoon of Day 1, the programme features panels and talks specifically structured to focus on games industry investment - such as the benefits of investing in Dubai, spotting opportunities in emerging markets, and global trends shaping the sector.
Another brand-new addition to the programme this year is PitchPlay, produced in partnership with DMCC as part of the Investment Summit to offer game entrepreneurs, developers, tech studios, tool makers, and service companies the chance to gain investment from a panel of experts and win prizes worth AED 55,000 – including a DMCC Gaming Centre Package worth AED 30,000 and a AED 25,000 Steel Media promotional package. Returning as an event favourite this year is The Very Big Indie Pitch competition, celebrating new indie games across mobile, PC and console while enabling developers to receive real-time feedback and identify new market opportunities from potential customers in a speed-networking format. In parallel, Connector SpeedMatch sessions have been designed as carefully matched rapid-fire meetings to pair game developers with publishers and investors to identify the right funding opportunities and partnerships. Meanwhile, the Big Indie Zone exclusive expo area invites indie developers to showcase their games to the industry's decision makers. Lastly, the Futura Advice Pitstop hosts a marathon of one-on-one consultations with seasoned legal and tax experts.
Marking its highly anticipated return to the Summit this year are the prestigious MENA Games Industry Awards, celebrating the very best businesses and individuals who are propelling the exciting MENA games industry forward. The awards spotlight every part of the ecosystem, from game developers and publishers to advertising and monetisation companies, tool-makers, and support companies, as well as new emerging technologies that enable the magic to happen. In a thrilling showcase of the sector's top talents, special award categories also pay homage to true industry legends who have made their mark on the industry.

'Never thought I'd win': Filipino expat wins Dh100,000 in latest UAE Lottery draw
A Filipino resident won Dh100,000 in the latest draw of UAE Lottery — an unexpected win that left him in awe. "I thought I would never win this amount," Sherwin Trinidad said, reflecting on his surprising good fortune. Sherwin, who has been serving as an EMT in Ajman for seven years, stumbled upon the UAE Lottery through a Google ad. Intrigued by the possibility, he decided to create an account, never imagining that this decision would lead him to holding a giant cardboard cheque bearing his name. When asked about his plans for the winnings, Sherwin expressed a deep desire to give back to his roots. "I will build my dream house and (start my) dream business in the Philippines," he said with a smile. But it's not just about his personal ambitions. Sherwin also plans to use part of his prize to support those in need, helping his family and others in his community who are struggling. As an EMT, his sense of duty goes beyond just his work — he's committed to improving the lives of those around him, "especially those with medical needs". When asked about his advice to fellow residents who are playing the UAE Lottery, Sherwin offered an inspiring message of perseverance: "Don't lose hope. Keep on playing the game." The UAE's first and only regulated lottery, which launched in December of last year, has quickly become a fixture in the country. With a whopping Dh100-million jackpot up for grabs, the lottery offers prizes that range from Dh100 to Dh100 million, depending on the number of matches made. While the odds of winning the jackpot stand at one in over eight million, Bishop Woosley, director of Lottery Operations at The Game, which runs the UAE Lottery, has earlier told Khaleej Times, "someone in the UAE will win the Dh100 million for sure." When asked about improving the odds, Woosley explained that the company was actively analysing "player preferences, what they play, how much they play, and what games they like" in hopes of better tailoring the experience. The lottery is for residents aged 18 and above in the UAE. Players are not allowed to participate in the games unless they are physically present in the country at the time of playing. As of now, the prizes are not subject to any taxes.

Emiratis soak up Lebanon's food scene and culture after lifting of travel ban
After a four-year halt, the UAE travel ban to Lebanon was lifted in May, much to the joy of citizens from both sides. Emirati visitors have been quick to fly over, despite the recent unrest, as Lebanon prepares itself for what is hopes will be a busy summer season. Restaurants and bars have been booming in Beirut, with new creative venues opening almost weekly. New hotels are opening and Lebanon's famed summer festivals have announced exciting programmes of live music and performances from local and international artists. The cultural scene includes art exhibitions and a few new galleries. For Barjeel Art founder Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi, this was what drew him to make a long-overdue visit soon after the ban was lifted. 'It had been 14 years since I had been to Lebanon and in that time many cultural institutions opened,' Al Qassimi tells The National. 'I was keen to visit them. Beirut, despite all the conflict, remains a major cultural hub in the region. I visited the Sursock Museum, the National Museum of Beirut, AUB galleries and the Dalloul Art Foundation alongside a tour of Basel Dalloul's own private collection at his residence. 'I was waiting for the right moment and made sure I went in the first few days after the travel ban was lifted. I plan to visit more often because of all of the cultural institutions, collectors' homes, archives and galleries that I didn't get to see during my short visit.' In the past, Emiratis enjoyed spending summers in Lebanon for all the above reasons, combined with more temperate weather than at home and a short flight. Now that the travel ban has been lifted, they're eager to visit again. Lebanon's Ministry of Tourism is anticipating a strong summer, thanks to returning expats and regional tourists. A lot of effort has been put into strengthening the tourism sector. Amenities and facilities have been added to Beirut's airport; campaigns encouraging tourists to visit other cities and rural locations have been running; and guides and other institutions have been undergoing training. We are working to extend tourism throughout the year and in all regions Laura Lahoud, Lebanon's Minister of Tourism 'We deeply appreciate the UAE's initiative and look forward to welcoming back all Gulf visitors who consider Lebanon their second home and are vital to its tourism sector, with many having strong ties and properties here,' Lebanon's Minister of Tourism Laura Lahoud tells The National. 'The government aims to solidify this renewed trust and pave the way for a thriving tourism industry. 'It is important that visitors have the best experience from the moment they arrive until the moment they leave. We are also working to extend tourism throughout the year and in all regions, from the north to the south and the Beqaa Valley. 'We want visitors to benefit from everything Lebanon offers – from the sea and the mountains to the beautiful nature – so that they always return.' The Phoenicia, one of the capital's oldest and grandest hotels, reopened in late 2022 after repairs from the 2020 Beirut Port blast. It has slowly been revamping its facilities, including the spa and restaurants. Amethyst, the hotel's poolside lounge, will reopen this month. 'We have observed a modest uptick in inquiries and bookings from the UAE market, particularly among leisure and corporate travellers,' says general manager Mathieu Greppo. 'Looking ahead, we are optimistic about the summer season. Continued stability and positive developments in regional relations would further bolster this outlook.' This month The View Hotel opened as an annex to the iconic historic shell of the former St George Hotel on the marina. A number of other restaurants, bars and coffee shops have opened, from high-end sophisticated experiences such as Mimi in Achrafieh to low-key burger joints like Slot in Gemmayzeh. Mimi owners Yasmina and Elissa Yared feel now is a good time to open their restaurant because people are steadily reinvesting in the country. Their Mediterranean-menu and lively atmosphere is already drawing in excited patrons. 'We always see that there is potential to invest here, as people love to go out and they're very positive despite all the problems,' Yasmina tells The National. 'The lifting of the ban is great news for the food and beverage sector. 'For the past five years, after the explosion and the economic problems, more than 70 per cent of institutions had to close and now people are reinvesting and opening. 'When we have more people coming from abroad it will maybe make it easier than before. The projection is positive, so we're hopeful.'
