Ukraine says eastern front stabilised after recent Russian thrust
KYIV (Reuters) -Ukrainian troops have stabilised the battlefield in an area of eastern Ukraine where Russian forces had made a sudden push this week to pierce Ukrainian defences, the regional governor said on Thursday.
Ukraine said small groups of Russian infantry had thrust some 10 kilometres (six miles) toward its main defensive line near the town of Dobropillia, raising fears of a wider breakthrough that would further threaten key cities.
The advance, just days before Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were due to meet in Alaska, appeared aimed at pressuring Kyiv to give up land in pursuit of peace three-and-a-half years into Russia's invasion of its neighbour.
"The situation in the Dobropillia sector has stabilised," Vadym Filashkin, governor of the embattled Donetsk region, wrote the Telegram messaging app. "Thanks to the heroic efforts of our Defence Forces, the front line is reliably holding."
Kyiv's military, which has played down the scale of the Russian thrust, had dispatched extra forces to the area including units of the battle-hardened Azov Corps.
General Staff spokesperson Andriy Kovalyov, in comments to the Interfax Ukraine news agency, echoed Filashkin's statement and credited Azov forces with inflicting heavy enemy casualties.
The Russian thrust had also fuelled criticism of Ukraine's military high command.
Defence analyst Konrad Muzyka wrote on X that Russian forces had made "minimal gains" in the area on Wednesday but had inched forward further south, near the strategic city of Pokrovsk.

Sabah to gazette long-settled villages
Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji and other leaders with some of the villagers at the event. - Pic by CMD SANDAKAN: The State Government is giving attention to long-established villages that have yet to be gazetted, including those in forest reserves, to ensure residents can continue living there legally. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the move included the recent approval of about 40,000 acres of land to be gazetted as villages in areas such as Sipitang, Tenom and several other districts. He said the gazetting exercise demonstrates the government's commitment to resolving long-standing issues faced by villagers, many of whom have lived on the land for generations. Hajiji said this assurance means villagers will no longer be seen as squatters but recognised as legitimate residents in settlements they have called home for decades. He was speaking at the Land Allocation Ceremony for the gazettement of Kampung Karamunting Baharu at SK Karamunting Open Hall on Friday, where he witnessed the handover of land owned by the Sandakan Municipal Council to be gazetted as Native Reserve Land. Hajiji described the event as a historic moment for the community, not only as a handover of land but also as recognition of the rights and history of residents who have lived in the area for more than 30 years. He also urged local authorities across Sabah to ease dealings with the public, citing Sandakan Municipal Council's recent effort to cut business licence approvals from weeks to just one day as an example of how services can be improved. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Youth leadership training key to shaping future: CM
Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: Musa officiates the event, while Abang Johari, Shahelmey and others look on. - Pic by CMD KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the International Youth Leadership Training programme would play an important role in nurturing young leaders as future change-makers. He said the world needed their ideas, energy and vision to address challenges that required fresh perspectives and bold actions. Speaking at the opening of the programme at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) today, Hajiji stressed that youth must continue to rise to leadership challenges and their potential must be recognised and nurtured. His speech, delivered by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, emphasised the importance of encouraging young people to engage actively in community initiatives and leadership training. The week-long programme involves youth leaders from 12 South East Asia and Pacific countries, and is organised by the Regional Islamic Da'wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (Riseap) with the United Sabah Islamic Association (Usia), government agencies and NGOs. Hajiji urged participants to build connections, share experiences, and embrace new ideas, reminding them that leadership was about influence, responsibility and service to others. He expressed confidence that the training under Riseap's guidance would help participants become capable and competent leaders in line with the Malaysia Madani Government's goals and Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan, while also thanking Riseap chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for choosing Sabah as host. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? No BN-PH seat clashes in Sabah polls: Ahmad Zahid
Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. SHAH ALAM: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said seat distribution between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the upcoming Sabah State Election has been finalised, with no overlaps. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, further informed that no negotiations have been held between BN and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) regarding seat distribution or cooperation for the state election, in order to respect PH. However, Ahmad Zahid anticipated that at least three-cornered contests would be unavoidable, following the likelihood of participation from other and new parties. 'What has been finalised is BN-PH, and we respect PH-GRS. There are no direct negotiations between BN and GRS. So far, any other discussions to avoid three-cornered contests or seat overlaps have been conducted behind the scenes. 'However, I feel that since there are too many new parties in Sabah wanting to contest this time, three-cornered fights will certainly be unavoidable, possibly up to eight-cornered. That is up to them, as that is the political landscape in Sabah. BN-PH has no overlapping seats,' he said. He said this when met after attending the 16th National-Level Civil Defence Student Corps (Kor Sispa) Training Completion Parade and Commissioning Ceremony here today. Ahmad Zahid was earlier reported as saying that negotiations on cooperation and seat distribution within the BN, PH, and GRS alliance for the state election were nearly completed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
