Malaysia to lead push for Asean Power Grid as regional chair, says DPM Fadillah in London

Malay Mail24-04-2025

LONDON, April 24 — Malaysia, as the Asean chair in 2025, will focus on realising the Asean Power Grid and improving the energy exchange programme among member states, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
He said that realising the power grid will improve energy security, accessibility and affordability not only within Malaysia but also among other Asean member states.
Fadillah, who is also the energy transition and transformation minister, said one of the issues regarding energy supply among Asean countries is that there are instances where a member state has extra power but cannot export the surplus.
'We are chairing Asean this year, so our focus will be on the Asean Power Grid. Within the Asean region, we need to support each other.
'So our focus this year is to come up with regulations and also study from other countries how we can improve the energy exchange programme among the (Asean) member states,' he said at the 'A Whole-of-System Approach-Addressing the Energy Trilemma' panel discussion held during the Summit on the Future of Energy Security event at the Lancaster House, here today.
The topic was discussed during Plenary Session 1, titled 'Mapping the Energy Security Landscape-Defining a Holistic Approach of the Summit'.
Among the other panellists were Spanish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge Sara Aagesen Munoz, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Affairs and Minister Hayyan Abdel-Ghani, Egyptian Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi, as well as Colombia's Mines and Energy Minister, Edwin Palma Egea.
Fadillah elaborated that by focusing on the power grid, Asean will be able to achieve energy security and affordability in terms of the electricity supply through cooperation among all the member states.
'We also will be able to contribute towards our commitment to clean energy for future generations,' the deputy prime minister said.
Fadillah added that Malaysia updated its energy policy by introducing the National Energy Transformation Roadmap (NETR), which focused on ensuring Malaysia has a secure electricity supply countrywide and also contributing to the region's energy security.
The deputy minister highlighted that cooperation within the region is also one of the focus areas Malaysia is exploring in terms of commitment to the energy trilemma of balancing sustainability, security, and affordability.
'In order to do that, we formed an implementation and planning committee for electricity at a high level between agencies and ministries that would decide in terms of planning the energy requirement and what the energy mix for the future would be,' he said.
The two-day Summit on the Future of Energy Security that kicked off today was organised by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the United Kingdom (UK) government and will see global decision-makers convene to advance actions to map and mould the future of energy security. — Bernama

MACC first enforcement agency to step forward as HAWANA 2025 strategic partner

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is the first enforcement agency to step forward to become a strategic partner for the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025, marking a significant step in strengthening collaboration between the media and public institutions. The strategic partnership was announced during the HAWANA 2025 Strategic Partners Appreciation Ceremony held at Wisma Bernama last Tuesday. Representing Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, MACC Director of Strategic Communications Hisyam Mohd Yusoff handed over a mock sponsorship cheque to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who officiated the event. Hisyam said the sponsorship reflects MACC's recognition of the media's critical role in disseminating accurate and timely information to the public. 'This strategic partnership is a gesture of support to media organisations for their contribution and collaboration in delivering important information to society. 'Insya-Allah, although this is MACC's first time as a strategic partner, it will set a benchmark for broader and deeper cooperation between the Commission and media organisations in the future,' he said in a statement. HAWANA 2025 has attracted the participation of 79 public and private entities as its strategic partners, including the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA), Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA), Department of Veterinary Services, Malaysian Foundation for Innovation, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, National Art Gallery, as well as MK Curtain Berhad and GM Klang. HAWANA 2025 will take place at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur from June 13 to 15, with the highlight of the celebration, to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, scheduled for June 14. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations, and media delegates from ASEAN member states are expected to attend, bringing together the professional media fraternity and industry experts to exchange ideas and forge strategic partnerships. HAWANA 2025, organised by the Ministry of Communications through Bernama as the implementing agency, will feature various events, including a media forum jointly organised with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14 and a two-day HAWANA carnival and exhibition at Sunway Putra Mall starting June 13. There will also be sporting activities incorporating traditional elements, as well as visits to leading polytechnics in Selangor, Perak and Johor. HAWANA, now in its fifth edition since its debut in 2018, is organised annually to recognise the essential role of journalists in national development.

Social media giants must tackle online harms, be held accountable

Fahmi took aim at Facebook, which earned RM2.5 billion in advertising revenue in Malaysia in 2023, for failing to curb scam ads and online gambling promotions. Speaking at the launch of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia's (CMCF) guidelines on reporting and sharing suicide-related content, Fahmi called on digital platforms to join the CMCF to support ethical content practices and help curb the rising tide of online toxicity. Fahmi said while Malaysia has the legal framework in place, enforcement and platform cooperation remain lacking. - Bernama photo He pointed out that companies earning billions in advertising revenue must take responsibility for the content published and shared on their platforms. 'TikTok has joined the Content Forum and we are grateful for that. But many other platforms are still not on board — especially X,' he said, referring to the platform formerly known as Twitter. Fahmi said while Malaysia has the legal framework in place, enforcement and platform cooperation remain lacking. 'The laws are mostly there. We also have the Online Safety Act coming into effect soon. But are platforms doing enough? I don't think so,' he said. He described X as one of the worst offenders. 'X really puts the 'X' in toxic. It's an extremely toxic environment,' he added. He also criticised Facebook for failing to control scam ads and deepfake content, noting that the platform has become a hotbed for fraudulent schemes that often go unchecked and prey on unsuspecting users. 'For a long time, we didn't look at scams as a form of cyberbullying. But scams, whether AI-generated deepfakes or identity theft used to promote fake products have a serious impact on mental health,' he said. Fahmi also took aim at Facebook, which earned RM2.5 billion in advertising revenue in Malaysia in 2023, for failing to curb scam ads and online gambling promotions. He said that resistance from tech platforms to cooperate with regulators is not just a Malaysian issue but one that affects the entire Asia-Pacific and Asean regions. 'Many of these platforms act as if they're above national laws. This isn't just about regulation. It's about their mindset. 'When it comes to profit, they move quickly. But when it's about following the law, they drag their feet,' he said. More Like This
