2025 MTV Video Music Awards lineup: Sabrina Carpenter, J Balvin and more
Sabrina Carpenter, Ricky Martin, Busta Rhymes, Alex Warren, J Balvin ft. DJ Snake, and Sombr are set to take the stage at the awards show, which will be broadcast live from UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y., on Sept. 7.
Hosted by LL Cool J, the ceremony will include J Balvin's performance of 'Zun Zun' with Justin Quiles and Lenny Tavárez — plus the live premiere of 'Noventa' with DJ Snake.
Carpenter, who made her VMA debut last year with a three-song medley, is nominated for eight awards this year, including Video of the Year ('Manchild') from her forthcoming album Man's Best Friend.
Special Moonperson trophies will be awarded to Rhymes and Martin. Grammy Award-winning artist Martin will be honored with the first-ever Latin Icon Award, while hip hop veteran Rhymes will take home the inaugural MTV VMA Rock the Bells Visionary Award.
Rhymes, 53, was honored with the Hip Hop Icon Award at Harlem Week on Sunday at St. Nicholas Park in New York City. The East Flatbush, Brooklyn native, known for rap classics such as 'Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check' and 'Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,' received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Aug. 1.
Lady Gaga leads the pack of nominees with a dozen nods this year. She already has 18 VMAs to her credit. This year, she competes in categories including Artist of the Year, Video of the Year and Best Album.
For the first time ever, the MTV Music Video Awards will air on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Sept. 7. They will also simulcast on MTV and stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.
Additional performers, presenters and appearances will be revealed in the coming weeks.

When Superman hit theaters last month, the DCU finally got a much-needed win. The film has earned strong reviews (it holds an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes) and has already crossed the $600 million mark at the global box office, making it the top-grossing superhero flick of 2025 so far. While it didn't hit the elusive billion-dollar milestone, it's a major victory for DC Studios, especially after the critical and financial failures of The Flash and Joker: Folie à Deux . With that kind of success, Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is finally feeling a sense of relief. In a recent interview, Gunn got candid about the pressure that came with launching the first film in the new DC Universe. "That's all it is, it's just an enormous sense of relief. It's relief, and then followed very quickly by excitement because Superman in some ways was the proof of concept. 'It was so, so hard, in the same way that Guardians [of the Galaxy] was so, so hard. Once you're in the groove, you realise, 'Oh, this is what works, this is what doesn't, this is where we can go with this.'" He went on to say: "It means now we have the freedom to tell these other stories in a way that's really exciting. Now, I can just be creative and I don't have to be as concerned with the life and death of the DC brand as I was a month and a half ago." The positive reception from fans has only reinforced his confidence moving forward. "I feel really embraced by the audience. My feeling is that the movie spoke to people, but it also spoke to people because there was a reason for its existence. There was this message of kindness that spoke to people." But Gunn also made it clear he doesn't intend to repeat the same formula in future DCU stories. "That doesn't mean every story I'm going to tell is a message of kindness; it just means there needs to be a reason for the story to be told. You can't just be piling on stuff because it's the characters people liked." Looking ahead, Supergirl is next in line, continuing the "Super-Family" narrative. With Clayface also in the pipeline, the pressure is on to maintain this new momentum. There are rumblings of a major crossover that might see Supergirl teaming up with the Man of Steel, and long-term fans are still hoping that Brainiac will finally make his big-screen debut. Gunn's ultimate vision remains tightly under wraps, but speculation points toward something big and exciting.

You should consider doing just that, too. A sequel to its hit 2022 predecessor, the film follows its central crew of 'Bad Guys' as they're forced out of retirement in order to join forces with a new, all-female squad of criminals to try to pull off one last, career-defining heist. Directed with the same slick sense of style and boasting the same endearing streak of tongue-in-cheek humor that made the first film so enjoyable, 'The Bad Guys 2' is the perfect way to spend a Friday or Saturday night. 'Elio' (2025) Speaking of endearing animated films that can entertain the whole family, Disney and Pixar's 'Elio' has also arrived on the VOD market this week. When it hit theaters in early June, the film's release was overshadowed a bit by its many delays and reports about its behind-the-scenes rewrites and creative overhauls. What was lost amidst all of that noise was the fact that the finished film was sweet, charming fun. Co-directed by 'Turning Red' filmmaker Domee Shi, 'Elio' follows an eleven-year-old misfit who finds himself transported to space when he is mistakenly identified as Earth's intergalactic ambassador. Featuring more than a few cute, cuddly aliens and enough sci-fi whimsy to make your heart flutter at least a few times, 'Elio' would be a worthy addition to any watchlists this weekend. 'Familiar Touch' (2025) Here is a film that probably was not on your radar this week. 'Familiar Touch,' writer-director Sarah Friedland's feature directorial debut, is one of the most acclaimed films of the year so far. Now available to rent or buy at home, the film follows an elderly woman (a spell-binding Kathleen Chalfant) whose transition to an assisted-living facility is challenged by her evolving relationships with herself and her new caregivers, as well as her own, declining cognitive abilities. Featuring a surprising supporting turn by 'Bob's Burgers' voice actor H. Jon Benjamin, 'Familiar Touch' is neither as emotionally manipulative as its premise suggests nor as oppressively bleak. It is a celebration of life, as well as an acknowledgement of the inevitable end of it. As far as this week's streaming offerings go, 'Familiar Touch' is unlike any other entry on this list, and if you give it a chance, you will likely find yourself moved by its grace and low-key, understated power. 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' (2025) You could not find a movie that has less in common with 'Familiar Touch' than 'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.' The latter, which purports to be the last installment in the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise, is another action extravaganza overflowing with practical stunts that boggle the mind and set pieces that deserve to be seen on as big a screen as possible. Now, several months after it made its theatrical debut, the film has arrived on VOD. While 'The Final Reckoning' is nowhere near the best 'Mission: Impossible' movie, it is still a thrilling and often astounding blockbuster. If you put off watching it back in May, now is your chance to finally tick it off your standing watchlist. 'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox' (Hulu) A limited series that ambitiously tries to dramatize one of the 21st century's oddest and most well-publicized true-crime stories, 'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox' has finally arrived on Hulu. Created by K.J. Steinberg, the series centers on its eponymous protagonist ('Tell Me Lies' star Grace Van Patten) as her study abroad in Italy takes a horrifying turn when she is wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of her roommate. The aptly titled 'Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox' follows Van Patten's Amanda as she is forced to prove her innocence — both in the court and in the press. The first two episodes of the series premiered Wednesday on Hulu. Its remaining six episodes are set to debut weekly on Wednesdays moving forward. If you're a true crime fan, this is one series you won't want to miss. 'Hostage' (Netflix) Netflix's 'Hostage' has the potential to be a riveting, pulpy breakout hit this week. Created by 'Bridge of Spies' co-writer Matt Charman, the series follows British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton (Suranne Jones) and French President Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy) as their international summit is challenged by the kidnapping of Abigail's husband and sudden threats of blackmail against Vivienne. A U.K.-set drama, the limited series runs just five episodes long, all of which premiere Thursday on Netflix. If edge-of-your-seat political thrillers are your thing, then you may want to check out 'Hostage' this weekend. It's a seemingly straightforward series that promises to quickly grab your attention and hold onto it right up to its inevitable conclusion. 'Peacemaker' Season 2 (HBO Max) Over three years after its first season premiered, 'Peacemaker' is back. Helmed, once again, by DC Studios co-CEO and 'Superman' filmmaker James Gunn, 'Peacemaker' Season 2 sees Gunn and co. complete their soft reboot of the now-dead DC Extended Universe. It is unclear how 'Peacemaker' Season 2 will deal with its past episodes' ties to the DCEU, but viewers do know that the new season takes place after 'Superman' and that they should expect to see plenty more violence, humor, romance and universe-hopping shenanigans. The season's first episode premieres Thursday on HBO Max, and its remaining seven installments will follow one at a time every Wednesday through Oct. 9. Coming off the success of both its first season and 'Superman,' 'Peacemaker' Season 2 ranks easily one of this week's biggest streaming premieres. 'Long Story Short' (Netflix) 'BoJack Horseman' creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg returns this week with his newest Netflix original, 'Long Story Short.' Animated in the same colorful, zany style as Bob-Waksberg's previous series, 'Long Story Short' follows the members of a middle-class Jewish family as they grow up, change and experience their own victories and failures over the course of 30 years. Featuring a star-studded voice cast headlined by Ben Feldman, Abbi Jacobson, Max Greenfield, Lisa Edelstein and Paul Reiser, the series promises to offer the same mix of absurdist humor and melancholic emotions that made 'BoJack Horseman' such a fan-favorite hit. The series' entire first season premieres Friday on Netflix, and 'Long Story Short' has already been renewed for a second season as well. That should give you the confidence to dive right in this weekend. Unlike a lot of other Netflix originals, you won't have to worry about it going away anytime soon. Angelina Jolie and Doug Liman Reunite for the Action-Packed Spy Thriller THE INITIATIVE — GeekTyrant
Angelina Jolie is stepping back into the high-octane world of espionage with The Initiative , a new spy thriller that sees her reuniting with Doug Liman, the director behind the fan-favorite Mr. and Mrs. Smith . Universal Pictures is currently in talks to scoop up this high-profile project, which has F. Scott Frazier ( Collide , xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ) on board to write the screenplay. While the studio is keeping plot details under tight wraps, this new film is shaping up to be a slick return to the action-packed roles that made Jolie a box office powerhouse with films like Salt , The Tourist , and Wanted . If the deal with Universal goes through, executive VP of production development Jay Polidoro and director of development Tony Ducret will be steering the project for the studio. The Initiative is being produced by Jeff Kirschenbaum for Roth/Kirschenbaum Films, which already shares a strong creative connection with both Liman and Jolie. The production company previously backed Disney's Maleficent franchise, where Jolie dominated the screen as the title character. Liman's recent streak of successful projects includes Road House for Amazon MGM Studios and the upcoming The Instigations for Apple TV+. He's no stranger to Universal either, having directed The Bourne Identity and American Made . He's also currently collaborating again with Tom Cruise on a groundbreaking project set to be filmed entirely in space. As for Jolie, she continues to expand her creative empire. She recently earned acclaim for her portrayal of opera icon Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín's Maria , and she'll soon be seen in the bilingual drama Couture by Alice Winocour, which she also produced. Her next big screen outing includes the film adaptation of Anxious People , directed by Marc Forster. Jolie has also made her mark behind the camera with projects like First They Killed My Father , which she co-wrote and produced, the Oscar-nominated Unbroken , and her upcoming film Without Blood , starring Salma Hayek Pinault and Demián Bichir, based on the novel by Alessandro Baricco. On top of all that, she recently nabbed a Tony Award as a producer for the Broadway musical The Outsiders .
