Mamata pulls up district officials over law and order situation

News184 days ago
Kolkata, Aug 12 (PTI) Expressing concern over the recent spate of murders in the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said the responsibility for law and order does not lie solely with personnel posted at police stations, but also with officers at the district level.
Banerjee made the statement during a surprise appearance at a meeting of district magistrates (DMs), convened by Chief Secretary Manoj Pant on the 'Aamader Para, Aamader Samadhan' project.
She stayed in the meeting for about 30 minutes and gave several directives concerning the state's law and order situation, an official said.
'She referred to three recent murder cases, and gave a clear message that the responsibility for law and order cannot rest solely on the ICs (Inspector-in-Charge) or OCs (Officer-in-Charge) of police stations. Senior district officials must also take direct responsibility to prevent serious crimes," the official said.
'She instructed that, along with ICs and OCs, SPs and police commissioners must also supervise matters directly," he added.
The CM also directed the district administrations to take special initiatives to help migrant workers returning to the state.
'This includes helping their children get admitted to schools, ensuring access to all government welfare schemes such as 'Swasthya Sathi', 'Krishak Bandhu', and enrolling them in the 'Karmashree'," the official said.
Banerjee also emphasised the need to promote the 'Aamader Para, Aamader Samadhan' project, under which Rs 10 lakh has been allocated to each polling booth to resolve issues of the area.
Later, in a post on X, she said 14,265 booths of the total 80,681 have been covered so far.
So far, 5,428 camps have been held, and 29,51,164 people have taken part in them, she said.
'The numbers reflect a strong public response, with nearly three million people having participated in the camps thus far. The project has not only enabled effective communication between citizens and the administration but has also helped prioritise over 1.36 lakh local development needs through direct community feedback," Banerjee posted on X.
In a separate statement, she said, 'I congratulate all our government employees and officials who are working day and night to make this project such a success." PTI SCH SOM

Will use power to serve people, not to settle scores with anyone: Revanth Reddy

Agency: PTI Hyderabad, Aug 16 (PTI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday said he would like to use power for the welfare of people but not to settle a score with anyone. Speaking after releasing the book 'Hasita Bhashpalu' written by poet Ande Sri, he said his victory is enough to cause pain to those who troubled him in the past. The CM said some persons had told him that he could target those who caused him trouble as he is now in power. However, he replied that he does not see anyone as an enemy. Observing that he held the posts of Zilla Parishad member, MLC, MLA, MP in a span of 17 years (from 2006 to 2023) before assuming the role of chief minister, Reddy said he feels power should be used for the welfare of four crore Telangana people. Taking a veiled dig at BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao, he said some people claim to be agitationists (for Telangana statehood) but true agitationists never claim. From Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara to Ande Sri, those who truly fought for people lost their personal properties and their families remained neglected, he said. 'But, those who claim to be agitationists acquired TV channels, newspapers, farmhouses and investments of thousands of crores. But, still they claim to be agitationists," he said. Reddy further said meeting the chief minister was a big thing earlier (during the BRS regime). However, anybody can meet the CM today, he said. 'I am one among you. I got this opportunity (CM post). As long as I have this opportunity, I will use it to serve poor people but not for my personal interests. Whether it is for five years or 10 years, I don't know," he added. Reiterating his resolve to make Telangana a USD one trillion economy by 2035 and a USD three trillion economy by 2047, the CM said he would make relentless efforts to make the state emerge as a USD three trillion economy by remaining active in public life till 2047. 'Elimination Of Root Causes Basis Of Settlement': Putin On Ukraine Talks With Trump

Putin described his recent talks with Trump as the first direct negotiations in a long time, calling them "frank, substantive" and a step closer to necessary decisions. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday said that his recent high-level talks with US President Donald Trump marked the first such direct negotiations in a long time, describing the discussion as 'frank, substantive" and a step closer to reaching the necessary decisions. 'We have not had direct negotiations of this kind at this level for a long time. We had the opportunity to calmly and in detail reiterate our position. 4 Members of Gujarat Music Band Killed In Bus-Truck Collision In Madhya Pradesh: Cops

Shivpuri: Four members of a Gujarat-based music band were killed and 11 other persons were injured on Saturday in a collision between a mini bus and a small truck in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh, police said. Members of the music band had performed at a programme in Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi and were returning to Gujarat when the accident occurred around 6 am on National Highway 46, around 30 km from the Shivpuri district headquarters, Station House Officer (SHO) Arvind Chari told PTI. He said the bus driver lost control of the wheel, leading to the bus veering into the wrong lane and colliding. The deceased included Hardik Dave (37), a singer, Raja Thakur (28), Ankit Thakur (17), and Rajendra Solanki (47), all members of the band, the SHO said. He said the injured persons have been admitted to hospitals. A preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of the mini bus with 17 people onboard might have dozed off due to fatigue as the troupe was travelling non-stop from Varanasi since 5 pm (Friday), Chari said. The bodies of the four victims have been handed over to their families, who are transporting them to Gujarat. Chari said the condition of the two critically injured persons is stable now. "We are waiting to record the statement of the injured driver after his condition improves and is able to speak," the SHO said.
