Sabah cops not ruling out bullying claims in Zara Qairina's death

The Star31-07-2025
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police have not ruled out elements of bullying in the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said claims of bullying, which could have caused the death of the 13-year-old, were part of their investigations.
He said the investigation will also focus on the circumstances leading to the girl's fall from her hostel building at SMA Tun Datu Mustafa in Papar, around 3am on July 16.
He said investigations were conducted thoroughly with absolute sensitivity as traumatised students were involved but allegations that those implicated in this case included children of a state assemblyman and VVIPs including himself, were unfounded.
'I have no children studying there, never have. This means there are some people who are trying to disrupt our probe,' Jauteh said, adding that he did not check which child belonged to whom when gathering statements for the probe.
He said this during a press conference after the Sabah Warriors' Day celebration at the state Police Headquarters in Kepayan near here on Thursday (July 31).
He explained that investigations would take time as everything has to be done thoroughly, professionally, sensitively and properly with the help of counsellors.
'These kids are traumatised, and scared. We cannot just expect them to blurt out the information we need accurately and truthfully without proper methods,' said Jauteh.
He said that investigation papers have been handed over to Bukit Aman for the final evaluation before the next course of action, which is to refer it to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC).
Jauteh said a total of 61 people including students and teachers have had their statements recorded.
As for claims that this case is being swept under the rug because the school principal was the wife of Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, both Mustapha and his wife Rosnih Nasir, have since denied the claims and maintained that she has nothing to do with the incident.
Mustapha said his wife only served as the principal in that school between March and November last year before retiring.

Whether it's to protect yourself during sensitive conversations, document important agreements or gather evidence in difficult situations, recorded calls can provide clarity and accountability. This was evident in the case of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, a Form One student from Sabah, whose tragic story gripped the nation. Zara was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17, a day after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school and was found unconscious in a drain near the school dormitory the day before. Following her death, allegations of bullying culture in the school surfaced. More notably, audio clips of phone calls between Zara and her mother emerged, in which Zara claimed she and a friend were victims of bullying by senior students. These recordings sparked widespread debate about how they were obtained and why they were so significant. In situations like these, knowing how to record phone calls safely and legally can be a powerful tool – a way to protect yourself, seek the truth, hold wrongdoers accountable or simply preserve the voices of loved ones no longer with us. Here is a practical guide to recording phone calls on your iPhone and Android devices, with care, respect and legal compliance in mind. Photo for illustrative purposes only. Both you and the other participant will hear an audio notice confirming that the recording has started. #SHOWBIZ: Mimi Lana: We must go all out against bullying

KUALA LUMPUR: Angered by the growing number of student deaths from bullying, actress Mimi Lana has urged Malaysians to take a strong stand against this "crime against humanity". In a Threads post yesterday, the Mencari Ramlee star highlighted the tragic death of student Zara Qairina in Sabah, saying that it proves bullying is rapidly becoming a serious social problem. Mimi, 30, mentioned that she frequently sees viral videos on social media showing students being bullied. "Bullying is a serious threat to the country that can no longer be ignored," she wrote. "On my FYP (For You Page on TikTok), I've seen more than 10 videos recorded by bullies from different schools. My heart is shattered, as are the hearts of so many parents who have lost their children, their hope for the future. These monsters must pay!" Mimi called on the government to treat bullying as a national threat to well-being, on par with other violent crimes. "We must have an all-out war against bullying. I salute the thousands who recently showed solidarity with the victims; we must ensure this never happens again." She concluded her message with the hashtags #JusticeForZara, along with other anti-bullying slogans like Stop Bullying, Save Our Children, and Justice For All Victims. Last Saturday, thousands of people gathered in major towns across Sabah to demand justice for Zara Qairina, a Form One student whose death has caused a nationwide outcry. The rallies took place hours after the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) announced that Zara's grave would be exhumed for a second post-mortem. Zara's body was found on the ground floor of her religious school dormitory in Papar on July 16, and she was pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has pledged a full and transparent investigation, saying that "no one is above the law."

Alor Setar MP upset after motion to discuss Zara Qairina case in Parliament rejected

KUALA LUMPUR: Alor Setar MP Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said he was disappointed over the rejection of his motion to discuss the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir in Parliament. "I proposed last week to discuss this case in detail in Parliament, but it was rejected with the reason that it will be addressed by ministers during the winding-up session of the 13th Malaysia Plan debate. "I'm not comfortable with that. The session is limited, and this issue has caused public unease. It deserves a full discussion," he said in a press conference at the Parliament media centre here on Monday (Aug 11). Zara Qairina's case has drawn national attention following the tragic circumstances surrounding her death, which involved allegations of bullying. Her case has also raised concerns about the safety of schools. The Perikatan Nasional leader also questioned why a post-mortem was not immediately conducted when it was confirmed the girl had died. "Until recently, the body had to be exhumed. This created some unease, but we understand the need to follow the procedure of law and investigation. "This delay raises questions about whether there is something to hide. The minister should clarify why the investigation did not follow proper procedures," he said. Despite public interest and concern, Afnan Hamimi said the case has seen no arrests or remand even after 60 individuals were questioned, highlighting a perceived disparity in law enforcement. "It's been four weeks with no arrests or remands. Is there insufficient evidence?" he asked. Afnan Hamimi further expressed concern over claims that teachers in Sabah were instructed not to comment on the issue, questioning if such an alleged gag order was real. "As a father, I'm losing trust in our schools, and I'm not alone. The minister assures us that schools are safe, but this is a serious case." He proposed appointing full-time school wardens immediately. He also suggested conducting internal audits and installing CCTV, urging the allocation of a budget for these measures to ensure safety. Afnan Hamimi also called for the enactment of anti-bullying legislation, as bullying cases continue to trend and stressed that such behaviour is unacceptable in a civilised society. Lastly, as an immediate measure, he advocated for the establishment of a special Cabinet committee, stating the need for a dedicated team to tackle such issues swiftly. "This isn't about politics; it's about humanity. We need to restore public confidence," he added. On Aug 8, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) instructed the immediate exhumation and post-mortem of deceased Form One student Zara Qairina by the police. Zara Qairina had been pronounced dead at a hospital in Sabah on July 17, a day after she reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory. On Monday, lawyer Shahlan Jufri who is representing the girl's family confirmed that there were injuries on the body of the 13-year-old, following his observations during the post-mortem process at the Forensic Department of Queen Elizabeth I Hospital here on Sunday (Aug 10).
