Noordwyk parkrun/walk collects food items for the needy
The participants and volunteers of the parkrun and a few community members were very generous and donated 100kg of food. This included cans of soup, baked beans, tuna, corned meat, mealie meal, rice, and sugar.
Patricia Nementzik of the parkrun said, 'The response was incredible. Gauteng has experienced some bitterly cold weather in the past few weeks, which can only make one feel for the people who are not only hungry but also feeling the effects of the elements.'

The handover of the donated goods was carried out on July 7 to Helen Loots of The Pantry Organisation. 'A huge thank you for the generous donations from parkrun and all those who donated food. We currently give monthly food parcels to 90 people who are in need, and this food will go a long way to helping us to continue to feed them, and others who are in need,' said Loots.
The event directors of Noordwyk parkrun, Amina Saber and Jeanny Tshukudu, thanked everyone who generously donated to this cause.

All schools are invited to enter the Uvongo litter awareness competition. The Uvongo Ratepayers' and Residents' Association is calling on local schools to take part in its 2025 Litter Awareness Competition, aimed at promoting environmental responsibility. Book drive in honour of Mandela Day
In celebration of Mandela Day, Shelly Centre hosted a book drive under the banner #ShellyCares, collecting over 300 children's books to help ignite a love for reading among local learners. The campaign ran from July 1 to 17, encouraged the public to donate books suitable for learners in Grades 1 to 7. The initiative concluded with a special handover at Marburg Primary, where the books will now contribute to building a more vibrant school library and literacy future. The handover was held recently and was attended by the principal, school governing body, learners, and representatives from the Educare Foundation, which generously contributed 50 books. RocoMamas Shelly Centre supported the event by donating coffee, adding warmth to the occasion. Shelly Centre's Mandela Day campaign was supported through a multi-channel activation that included a press ad, social media engagement, influencer content, and centre-based promoters who helped spread awareness and drive donations. 'Literacy is a doorway to opportunity, and we are proud to honour Mandela's legacy by investing in the education of future leaders,' said Marie Sukkels, centre manager. This initiative is part of Shelly Centre's ongoing commitment to uplift the local community through meaningful engagement and collaboration. 'Lucia's Kiddos' grows from a few loaves to a lifeline for a community What began with R100 and a few loaves of bread has grown into a lifeline for 83 children, thanks to a domestic worker's vision and a community's compassion. Seven years ago, Lucia Majola from Cottonlands, Verulam, had a dream in which God told her to feed hungry children in her area. 'I asked, 'How will I do that? I am just a domestic worker who also needs help.' The voice in her dream replied, 'Start with the little you have,'' said Majola. The dream stayed with her, but it wasn't until last year, when hardship struck, that her sister reminded her of the dream. She took the plunge and began feeding children who often go hungry over weekends. Today, she feeds 83 children every Saturday and Sunday. 'More children come, and I wish I could feed them all. But I am deeply thankful to everyone who has helped. It means so much to the children and their parents.' Her story inspired Donovan Chisholm, a sales executive at Bidvest McCarthy Toyota Ballito. 'If she could start with R100, so could I,' he said. Chisholm rallied colleagues and formed a group called Making a Difference, encouraging community members to contribute R100, food or time. The initiative grew rapidly, with Ballito families joining in, donating meals, clothes and toys, while bringing joy through dancing, singing and play. 'For those few hours, there's no darkness, just life and light,' said Chisholm. In the past year, the group has served more than 7 000 meals and is now registering as an NPO. Plans are under way to build a shelter to protect children during food distributions. Their latest project, a winter blanket drive led by the Toyota Knights of Bidvest McCarthy Toyota Ballito, has raised over R15 000 worth of blankets, with support from Radio Life & Style, local donors and even international donors. 'One mother told me her daughter had considered ending her life, but after joining the weekend programme, she found hope,' said Chisholm. 'We are just getting started.
