‘Smallville' Star Makes Bold Statement About ‘Superman' Actor David Corenswet
During the July 15 episode of his podcast,Inside of You, Rosenbaum, who has a brief appearance in the 2025 film, said he thoroughly enjoyed Superman, directed by James Gunn. In addition, he said while he always will love his Smallville co-star Tom Welling's portrayal of Clark Kent, AKA Superman, he thinks Corenswet embodied the iconic character.
"Tom is always my Smallville Clark Kent. He's my Clark Kent. But David Corenswet was freaking Superman. He is awesome," said Rosenbaum during his podcast.
The actor also complimented Rachel Brosnahan for her portrayal of Lois Lane and Edi Gathegi's portrayal of Mr. Terrific. In addition, he said he believes "Nicholas Hoult does a great job" as Lex in the film.
During a July 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hoult said he spoke to Rosenbaum about playing Lex. According to Hoult, Rosenbaum "was so kind and encouraging, and he really gave me a freedom and a confidence and a support that felt really lovely going into it."
"He was probably the first person I saw play Luthor when I was growing up. So to get to interact with him and to chat with him beforehand was really special. I appreciate that from him, his time, but also just his encouragement meant a lot," said Hoult to the publication. "The beautiful thing he said was, 'You've got this. Go have fun.' It's a, weirdly, kind of uplifting and wonderful thing to play a character that you've watched someone play and do a brilliant job at, to then have them say, 'Yeah, go get it. Go take it on.' That's a really bolstering sort of thing to happen. It was very kind of him to do that because I suppose it's a weird thing taking on a character that other people have played in some ways."

James Gunn Drops Major Hint at Margot Robbie Returning to DCU
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently busy building the DCU, which will consist of live-action films, animated and live-action shows, and video games. Gunn has already released "Superman," which became a massive hit. More news: Paramount Confirms New 'TMNT' Live-Action Film is in Development "Superman" was not Gunn's first foray into the DCU, as he was tasked with rebooting "The Suicide Squad," which featured characters from the original DC film, "Suicide Squad," but were all mostly killed off in the first 10 minutes. One of the biggest holdovers from the previous DC Universe is Margot Robbie, who portrayed Harley Quinn. It is no secret that Robbie became an instant fan-favorite, and fans have been clamoring for her return in Gunn's new DCU. Gunn finally addressed the situation in a big way, hinting at Robbie potentially returning as Quinn. In a feature from Entertainment Weekly, Gunn divulged a small, yet not-so-subtle hint about Harley Quinn making a return. Polka-Dot Man, Harley Quinn and Bloodsport in action in "The Suicide Squad" Polka-Dot Man, Harley Quinn and Bloodsport in action in "The Suicide Squad" Warner Bros. Pictures & DC Comics More news: 'Nobody 2' Reviews Are Overwhelmingly One-Sided "That will be revealed down the line," Gunn tells Entertainment Weekly. Gunn did not state that Robbie won't return as Quinn, which is the general case for the filmmaker. Whenever a fan asks about a specific plot point or character, Gunn is no stranger to offering a direct answer. Gunn has shot down rumors plenty, but this time, he chose not to state outright that Robbie would not return. It would be believed that she could return as Quinn in some capacity. Gunn also revealed that he has been trying to find a way to bring back fellow fan-favorite, Idris Elba. Elba portrayed Bloodsport in "The Suicide Squad" and also became an instant hit. Bloodsport, being an assassin who has a change of heart and becomes a hero, while also having a deep rat phobia, was fantastic. "I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out," Gunn says of Idris Elba's ruthless mercenary from the 2021 sequel. "So we'll see what happens." Gunn is reportedly working on the sequel to "Superman," but there are also "Lanterns" and "Supergirl" coming down the pipeline. Both the series and film could feature more DCU characters, which would make a lot of sense. "Peacemaker" season 2 is also set for release later this month, and would be a place where Quinn or Bloodsport could make an appearance. For more movie news, head to Newsweek Movies.

Of Notoriety: Newspapers are an ageless gift with ‘superpowers' to educate, entertain and inform
As I write this column on Aug. 13, on the occasion of my 55th birthday, there is one standout gift I received that represents so much more than just a gift of sentiment. My intern-turned-work associate (and right-hand man) Luke Miiller purchased a $35 small metal replica of a newspaper sales box, a rare landscape sight these days. This particular miniature newspaper box is for the famed but fictitious The Daily Planet newspaper, the beloved print publication that dual identity reporter Clark Kent and alter-ego Superman worked for, side-by-side with photographer Jimmy Olsen, rival scoop reporter Lois Lane and angry publisher Perry White. Luke purchased the keepsake last month when I joined him and others at AMC 16 in Schererville to see the new Warner Bros. 'Superman' film starring David Corenswet in the title role. The tin box includes a hinged plastic clear window where a small paper copy of an issue of The Daily Planet, featuring a large photo of Superboy's canine pal Krypto on the front page with a mock story. This memento box is really intended to hold enough popcorn to fill a large bucket, but the concession stand conveniently serves the popcorn in a separate bucket. I liked the new film version of 'Superman.' However, given I was born in 1970, the original 'Superman: The Movie' released in 1978 and starring the late greats Christopher Reeve as the man in the cape opposite Gene Hackman as scheming Lex Luthor will still always rank tops in my heart and mind. Most of all, I'm proud of both films' treatment of newspapers and reporters chasing after their stories as a narrative of the excitement and adventure represented by the journalism field. From coverage of county fairs to city council meetings, school boards, politics, crime, business and corruption to the contrasting content of enlightenment from feature stories, columnists, entertainment, sports and arts and culture, newspapers have had it all covered for centuries, and delivered to doorsteps (or the digital equivalent in recent decades). If you open the inside well of my newspaper box proudly displayed at work on my desk, carefully folded to fit the interior is a full-size copy of The Daily Planet, published by Gannett Media on July 7 as a 'wrap-around' souvenir covering USA Today, released as a special promotional bonus to push movie ticket sales. The front page includes stories with bylines by both Lois Lane and Clark Kent as well as photos with a Jimmy Olsen credit. This isn't the first time USA Today and parent company Gannett have surprised readers with a clever keepsake souvenir edition. Reader and friend Tammie Miller, spotting my newspaper box on my desk last week, reminded me that a decade ago, the Oct. 15, 2015, issue of USA Today was also a special milestone edition. That magical date is the date that appeared on the prop newspaper held by actor Michel J. Fox as Marty McFly in the hit film sequel 'Back to the Future Part II' released in 1989 by Universal Pictures. As spotted in the quick glimpse scene in the film, the prop newspaper shows it is sold for $3 in the predicted year 2015. In truth, USA Today sold for $2 in 2015 and today sells for $3. When Gannett printed up the commemorative prop replica newspapers on Oct. 15, 2015, they were sold for $6. (Tammie Miller happened to snag one!) Among the headlines and predictions on the prop newspaper attempting to predict the future for the year 2015? There are story teases and references to the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series, royal coverage of 'Queen Diana,' the popularity of rehydrated pizza, hoverboards and a female U.S. president. There is also a large banner headline that reads: 'Cholesterol may be cancer cure' Newspapers are a reason to keep smiling: past, present and future.
