On the Auction Block: 3 Race Cars We're Watching This Week

Yahoo30-01-2025
The folks over at Bring A Trailer have no shortage of cool race cars on its virtual auction blocks at any given time. Here's a few eye-catchers that have our attention this week:From Bring A Trailer: This Ford Mustang is a NASCAR Cup Series race car that was built by the now-defunct Stewart-Haas Racing team and re-bodied in 2022 with Next Gen carbon-composite panels.
Power is supplied by a Ford V8 linked with a G-Force GT4 four-speed manual gearbox, and the white body panels have a No. 4 Mobil 1 livery. Equipment includes forged 18-inch center-locking BBS wheels with Goodyear slicks as well as Stewart-Haas Racing shocks, a Ford 9-inch rear end, Holley electronic fuel injection, an ATL fuel cell, a vented hood and windshield, left-side air deflectors, and side-exit exhaust outlets.
The cockpit has fire extinguishers, an integrated roll cage, a Holley EFI instrument panel, and a single bucket seat with Simpson harnesses. Acquired by the seller in 2024, this NASCAR racer is now offered in Pennsylvania with a car cover and a bill of sale.
Why We're Watching: Are you kidding me? Okay, so it's not street legal, but park that baby in the driveway on race day and be the talk of the neighborhood.
Auction Ends: Monday, February 3, 1:51 p.m.
The Link: Ford Mustang NASCAR Cup CarFrom Bring A Trailer: This 1968 Porsche 911 coupe has been used as a race car over the past several decades, and it was modified in the mid-2000s with 911R-style bodywork and a replacement 2,464cc flat-six. Finished in white with black graphics, the car features a central fuel filler, flared quarter panels, acrylic side windows, and Fuchs-style 15-inch wheels.
Following the current owner's acquisition in 2017, the engine was further modified with twin-plug cylinder heads, JE 92 mm pistons, Web Cam camshafts, and MSD ignition modules. This 911 race car is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner at no reserve in California with logbooks, service records, and a clean Arizona title in the name of the owner's family trust.
Why We're Watching: We've always been a sucker for a racing Porsche. This one will cost a pretty penny, and it should.
Auction Ends: Sunday, February 2, 1:07 p.m.
The Link: 1968 Porsche 911 CoupeFrom Bring A Trailer: This Ford Thunderbird is a non-running NASCAR race car that was campaigned by Robert Yates Racing with driver Davey Allison during the 1992 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season. Referred to internally as 'Superstar', the car participated in three races, leading all three and scoring a second-place finish after leading 190 laps in the GM Goodwrench 500 at Rockingham Speedway.
The car suffered mechanical issues at the Food City 500 race in Bristol and crashed out of the Bud 500 later in the season. The car was rebuilt and used as a backup for the 1993 season and was later fitted with a Ford Taurus-style body for use as a show car to honor Dale Jarrett's 1999 title win. It was donated to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2001 and has not been started in more than 20 years.
Why We're Watching: This one comes with a signed letter of authenticity and car history from Robert Yates Racing's former assistant crew chief Joey Knuckles. The legendary status of Davey Allison in NASCAR puts this car on our wish list.
Auction Ends: Wednesday, February 5, 2:27 p.m.

Your next Ford may be able to dig holes. What to know about 'dig mode.'

Blue Oval models could gain head-scratching new feature following patent. Ford vehicles could include a new feature that's straight out of Pokémon. New vehicle technology has advanced to the point where vehicles can crab walk, turn like tanks and more. Ford's recent patent hints at a capability for its vehicles that has yet to appear on roads — or trails. Is this new feature coming to future Blue Oval vehicles? Does it have any practical real-world applications, or will it just add a wow factor to some models? Here's what to know. Ford patents dig mode feature for future vehicles Ford Motor Company's subsidiary Ford Global Technologies LLC was granted a patent for "vehicle operation in one-wheel dig mode." That's right, some Ford vehicles could be able to dig soon, like the Pokémon move that allows users to burrow into the ground. The Blue Oval produces several capable off-road models including the Bronco Sport and Bronco. Ford also produces special off-road trims for some of its most capable vehicles. These trims often feature all-terrain tires, suspension upgrades, skid plates and more. The brand also makes popular best-selling work trucks like the Ford F-150. These vehicles have their fair share of interesting capabilities, but a dig mode would be novel even for the most niche models. Based on Ford's new tech patent, the feature would allow drivers to "spin one of the wheels of the vehicle to dig a hole in the ground below the spinning wheel" while the other wheels remain stationary. According to the patent "the hole may be used in the recovery of another vehicle that is stuck during recreational off-roading." Other uses for the feature include "recreational camping" and making holes at job sites. Ford is no stranger to unique features and designs The Blue Oval is no slouch when it comes to inventing and implementing bold new features. From a design perspective, the Ford Maverick is potentially one of its most daring endeavors in recent years. The Maverick is the current smallest and most affordable pickup truck on the American market. It also happens to be a standard hybrid pickup. The Ford Maverick's innovation doesn't stop at its size or powertrain. Ford designed the Maverick truck bed to be easily customizable so owners could create their own bed setups to maximize space, since the Maverick is a small truck. In terms of unique capabilities, the Ford F-150 Lightning is another notable mention. Some F-150 Lightning models include Home Backup Power. This feature essentially turns the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck into a backup generator for your home. The F-150 Lighting also has exportable power to power tools on worksites and accessories through its frunk (front trunk) and truck bed. The brave new world of automotive features Today, many final configuration cars, trucks and SUVs have astounding capabilities. From self-parking and semi-autonomous driving to augmented reality head-up displays and native voice assistants, vehicle tech has made huge strides in the last decade. Over-the-air updates now allow automotive brands to patch software bugs and roll out new features for vehicles through the internet. As automotive technology and features continue to advance, who knows what automakers will unveil next to capture the attention of consumers.

NASCAR: Will a surprise winner again steal one of the last two Cup Series playoff spots available at Daytona?

Fourteen of the 16 spots in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs are taken. Austin Dillon's surprise win at Richmond made him the 14th winner of the 2025 season. The victory came a year after Dillon won at Richmond when he crashed Joey Logano on the last lap in an attempt to get a playoff berth. Though Dillon officially kept the win, NASCAR revoked his playoff privileges from the victory and Dillon failed to qualify for the postseason. This year, he's in. Dillon became the third driver to get a victory in 2025 despite currently sitting outside the top 20 in the points standings. Josh Berry (22nd) won the third race of the season at Las Vegas. And Shane van Gisbergen (24th) has dominated road courses thanks to his excellence in Australian Supercars. But he doesn't have any top-10 finishes on oval tracks. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] With Dillon winning his way into the playoffs, there are just two playoff spots up for grabs on Saturday night at Daytona (7:30 p.m. ET, NBC). If a winless driver becomes the 15th winner of the season, just one driver will make it into the playoffs via his position in the points standings. And you don't have to go back very far to find the last time a driver snuck his way into the playoffs at Daytona. A year ago, Harrison Burton got the lone victory of his Cup Series career to get into the playoffs. Burton led only the final lap as the seven-caution race featured two massive crashes. Can a similar surprise happen in 2025? Here's a look at how the playoff race looks ahead of the final race of the Cup Series regular season. All odds are from BetMGM. Already in the playoffs Denny Hamlin (4 wins) Shane van Gisbergen (4) Kyle Larson (3) Christopher Bell (3) William Byron (2) Chase Elliott (1) Ryan Blaney (1) Chase Briscoe (1) Bubba Wallace (1) Joey Logano (1) Ross Chastain (1) Austin Cindric (1) Josh Berry (1) Austin Dillon (1) Larson and Hamlin are the co-favorites for the Cup Series title at +400 while Bell is at +450. Van Gisbergen is currently third with 22 playoff points but is 80-1 to win the title thanks to his inability to get a top-10 outside of a road course. Elliott's early end to his Richmond race means that William Byron will win the regular-season title and start the playoffs with the most playoff points. The Team Penske trio of Blaney, Logano and Cindric are the three favorites to win Saturday night's race thanks to their prowess at drafting tracks. Blaney and Logano are 10-1 to win while Cindric is 12-1. Would love a repeat winner Tyler Reddick (714 points) Alex Bowman (685 points) Both Reddick and Bowman would love a Team Penske driver — or any driver with a win, for that matter — to get to victory lane if neither of them are going to make it. Bowman is 60 points ahead of Chris Buescher in the points standings; Buescher cannot catch him without getting a win to automatically qualify himself for the playoffs. If there is a new winner, Reddick has a 29-point advantage over Bowman for what would be the final playoff spot. But we've seen points deficits like that get erased at tracks like Daytona and Talladega before. All it takes is an early crash. Needs to win to get in Chris Buescher (20-1 to win Daytona) Ryan Preece (25-1) Kyle Busch (14-1) Ty Gibbs (35-1) AJ Allmendinger (60-1) Brad Keselowski (13-1) Carson Hocevar (35-1) Michael McDowell (40-1) Erik Jones (40-1) John Hunter Nemechek (60-1) Zane Smith (60-1) Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (20-1) Daniel Suarez (40-1) Justin Haley (60-1) Todd Gilliland (50-1) Ty Dillon (30-1) Noah Gragson (50-1) Cole Custer (60-1) Riley Herbst (80-1) Cody Ware (200-1) Keselowski and Busch are considered the favorites among the winless drivers to get a win and make the postseason. It's been a rough year for both former Cup Series champions. Busch is 16th in the points standings and has just two top-five finishes. Keselowski has shown speed recently, but he's 19th with four top-five finishes. Keselowski could be staring at all three of his Roush Fenway Keselowski cars missing the playoffs if neither he, Buescher or Ryan Preece win on Saturday. Buescher and Preece are currently 11th and 13th in the standings, respectively. In most years, that's enough to get you into the postseason. Not this year with three winners outside the top 20 in the standings. Both Stenhouse and McDowell are former Daytona 500 champions and could be in position for a victory late in the race. Ty Dillon is 15 places behind 17th-place Ty Gibbs in the standings but has shorter odds to get a victory.
